1 NUFFIELD COLLEGE Alumni Relations & Communications Manager JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Place of Work: Responsible to: Hours of Work: Salary: Probation: Alumni Relations & Communications Manager Development Office, Nuffield College, Oxford, OX1 1NF The Director of Development acts as Line Manager, but the postholder may also be expected to work under the supervision of the Senior Tutor and Bursar. Full-time (35 hours per week); though the position could potentially be split into two roles and therefore applications would also be welcome from candidates who wish to hold one of the two roles on a part-time basis (0.5 FTE or greater). 28,392 to 35,325 pa (pro rata if appropriate) 6 months Overview of the role Nuffield College is a graduate college of the University of Oxford, specialising in the Social Sciences, particularly Economics, Politics, and Sociology. We provide a stimulating researchorientated environment for graduate students and academic staff, and host a series of high profile research projects, including the Centre for Experimental Social Sciences and the Centre for Social Investigation. One of the College s fundamental aims is to act as a bridge between the academic and public worlds. Nuffield College s Development Office was launched in 2015, and in the short time since its creation has been energetically expanding its activities and enhancing connections with our alumni, fellows, and friends. In addition, we have recently engaged a design and innovation company to redevelop our website and strengthen the College s visual identity. We are now seeking to appoint an Alumni Relations & Communications Manager. The responsibilities of this position fall into two broad categories: (1) managing the College s growing calendar of Alumni events and strengthening relationships with our Alumni; and (2) working closely and constructively with our academic community (including Visiting Fellows) to increase awareness of the College s aims and achievements and cement its reputation as an outstanding institution for teaching and research in the social sciences. This is a full-time position (35 hours per week), but we would welcome applications from candidates who wish to hold one of the two roles on a part-time basis (0.5 FTE or greater).
2 Each part of the role will require significant collaboration with academic and other members of the College, so the successful candidate must be able to forge strong working relationships with people at all levels across different parts of the organisation. She or he must also have outstanding written and oral communication skills, excellent organizational skills, the ability to work independently and without close supervision, and the capacity to think and act creatively. Key duties and responsibilities The key duties and responsibilities that the postholder(s) will be expected to fulfill are set out below. Alumni Relations Organise and attend alumni events in the UK and abroad (to include planning, budgeting, liaising with relevant parties, creatively and responsibly owning the event from start to finish). Create strong and enduring relationships with Alumni and other friends of the College and conduct research for development activities. Maintain and update the Development and Alumni Relations System database (DARS), ensuring that relevant processes are followed and preserving the integrity of the data. Maintain the Alumni & Development pages of the College s website; obtain and contribute alumni-relevant content for College publications. Contribute to the strategic development of the Development and Alumni Relations Department. Analyse and produce reports on Alumni participation and development activities. Communications Build strong and productive working relationships with academic members of the College, including Visiting and Honorary Fellows (in order to promote the dissemination of their research and other activities to external audiences) and with external parties (including, for example, relevant University departments, the central University Press Office and external relations team). Draft and publish material on the College s website, including news stories, in conjunction with other departments within College; edit relevant sections of the website and manage some or all of the College s social media accounts.
3 Support the production and dissemination of the College s printed and electronic communications (including, for example, magazines, cases for support, donors reports, e-newsletters). Maintain and administer the College s design guidelines. Contribute to the strategic development of the College s communications activities and initiatives; monitor and maintain records of internal and external news items and contacts and provide reports as requested. The lists above are not exhaustive, and the postholder(s) may be asked to undertake other duties commensurate with the level and nature of the post. Selection criteria In addition to meeting the selection criteria set out below, the successful candidate must have experience of working either in a role focused on development and/or alumni relations, or in a communications-related role, preferably involving the design and delivery of communication materials in a variety of digital and other media. Essential An undergraduate degree, preferably in a social science subject (or equivalent competence gained through relevant experience). Outstanding written and oral communication skills and attention to detail, including the ability to communicate complex material in a coherent way. A proven ability to build strong and productive working relationships with people at all levels, and to earn the trust and confidence of academics and other senior staff. The ability to thrive as part of a small team. Excellent IT skills, including experience of updating websites and creating and publishing digital content (including videos); experience in social media management. Evidence of the capacity to think and act creatively and proactively, and to work effectively under her or his own initiative. Strong organizational skills, with the ability to prioritise and handle multiple tasks simultaneously while meeting competing deadlines and working to budgets. Experience of organising and attending events. An interest in and support for the aims and ambitions of Nuffield College. Desirable Experience of dealing with high profile individuals and international networks. Relevant professional qualifications or experience in marketing, media, communications or related fields. Working knowledge of DARS or a similar database (such as Raisers Edge). Experience in the charity sector, preferably in Higher Education

The closing date for receipt of completed applications is noon on Monday 19 th February Interviews will be held on Wednesday 28 th February Summary of Terms and Conditions The starting salary for this position will be agreed in the range 28,392 to 35,325 (pro rata as appropriate). Salaries are reviewed annually in August, although the College is under no obligation to award an increase following a salary review. The post will be subject to the successful completion of an initial probationary period of six months. Normal hours of work will be agreed with the Director of Development or other relevant College officers, but may vary according to operational needs. The postholder will be entitled to 41 days holiday in each complete leave year (inclusive of all public holidays and College closure days). The Alumni Relations & Communications Manager will be enrolled automatically into the University Superannuation Scheme (USS) from the commencement of their employment, unless they decide to opt out. S/he will be entitled to take lunch in College when the kitchens are open at no charge, and will also have access to free tea and coffee. All employees of Nuffield College are eligible to join the Oxford College s Healthcare Plan; in this case, the College will pay for single membership of the Plan, but the employee may, at her or his own expense, upgrade to partner or family membership. Membership of the Healthcare Scheme is a taxable benefit. Eligibility to work in the UK The Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006 makes it a criminal offence for employers to employ someone who is not entitled to work in the UK.
