POSITION SUMMARY Under the general leadership of the Vice President Education, the Director, Education Policy & Planning, is responsible for leading an integrated portfolio of strategic files, including: key strategic projects, initiatives and planning identified within and championed through the Education Division, in alignment with the college s strategic and education plans; strategic leadership and oversight for education policy review, development and implementation; and leadership for the college s processes related to the approvals of curriculum.
2 The Director, Education Policy & Planning will establish and maintain key, mutually supportive relationships, working in collaboration with senior college and educational leadership, faculty and support staff as well as with corporate departments in the facilitating design, development and implementation of strategic policy or project endeavours. With limited supervision, the incumbent will play a leadership role in moving strategic planning and initiatives from inception to delivery, managing issues in alignment with college values and policies. This position may represent the Vice President Education, in academic and operational matters, as required. C) REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS This position is responsible to the Vice President Education and has two direct reports, as follows: the Education Policy Specialist and Coordinator, Education Approvals. D) ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Education Policy: 1. Provides strategic leadership for the consultation on and development, review and implementation of strategic and operational educational policy at the college, working to ensure that educational policy reflects the college s value for and commitment to the delivery of a life-changing student learning experience. 2. Develops and maintains relationships with key educational areas, college leadership and other stakeholders and ensures the development of education policy takes into account the views and positions of a diverse range of interests and strategic goals and priorities. 3. Provides strategic leadership for the planning and development of a made-in-camosun education policy framework that reflects best practice in a post-secondary policy environment. 4. Develops and implements strategy for advancing policy goals with key decision-makers in the college community. 5. Briefs and seeks input and feedback from the Board of Governors, College Executive Team and Education Council on policy development and implementation goals. 6. Seeks approval for new and revised policies from relevant and appropriate governing and approving parties. 7. Communicates regularly with applicable stakeholders regarding policy, procedural or governance actions approved by the Board, Senate and the Executive in conjunction with college communications. Education Planning: 1. In consultation with the VP Education, and Deans and Directors, leads the planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of high priority divisional initiatives and projects with varied focus from inception to completion. 2. Provides strategic leadership for project planning, design, development and execution, including functional leadership to cross-college project teams in the establishment and assignment of work deliverables, project accountabilities, timelines and monitoring progress. 3. Establishes (includes identifying, negotiating, monitoring) and maintains accountability for project budgets and resources required for the on-time and in-scope delivery of approved strategic educational projects.

Develops and maintains relationships with key educational and college leadership and other stakeholders and ensures the development of practices and procedures associated with education and curriculum approvals takes into account the views and positions of a diverse range of interests as well as strategic educational goals and priorities. 5. Works collaboratively across the Division and with other corporate departments (i.e. finance, HR) and leads the development of cross-functional teams with a view to review and facilitate the development of efficient and effective systems and processes. 6. Provides leadership in the development, implementation and evaluation of the Education & Student Services Division s strategic planning processes, in support of the Inspiring Learning Education Plan. Develops performance measures for short and long term planning processes and strategic Division and operational plans. 7. Facilitates the development and prioritization of Education Division priorities, and recommending those priorities for action, where there are competing claims for budget, resources, timelines and divisional attention among initiatives. 8. Designs, implements and maintains planning, decision-making and accountability systems to support organizational effectiveness. 9. Represents the College on various internal and external committees. 10. Acts in support of cross-school systems to include student complaint processes, consistency of budget and human resource processes and curriculum/education approval processes. Leadership Responsibilities: 1. Provides direct supervision and leadership including but not limited to: recruitment, day-to-day supervision, coaching, and performance planning and management for the college s Education Policy Specialist and Coordinator, Education Approvals. 2. Provides functional leadership to cross-college project teams on a variety of Education Division projects including establishing work deliverables, timelines, accountabilities, budget and other resources, and monitoring progress against plans. 3. May represent or act for the Vice President Education, in academic and operational matters, as required. 4. May provide academic leadership in the absence of the Deans, as required. 5. Participates as a member of the Division s Education Leadership Team (ELT) as well as the College s Strategic Leadership Council (SLC). 6. Represents the strategic needs, interests and requirements of education policy, planning and approvals at senior educational and college leadership teams, committees and councils. E) OTHER FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES Performs other related tasks, as assigned.
