New York: Pearson Prentice Hall HRMT PROGRAM MISSION To educate exceptional leaders for the global hospitality and tourism industries. COURSE DESCRIPTION The course is designed to equip students with skills and experiences for job search and successful career entry and management based upon individual skills and needs. Page 1
2 COURSE OBJECTIVES/OUTCOMES This course is designed to equip students with skills and experiences for successful career entry and effective career management based on individual needs and skills. After completion of this course, you should be prepared to: 1. Effectively utilize computer-assisted learning materials to demonstrate competence in preparation of a professional resume and other written career placement materials; 2. Understand ethical business practices and business protocol for the hospitality industry; 3. Integrate the mission of the College of Human Sciences as a philosophical underpinning to their professional practice; 4. Successfully transition to hospitality practicum and gainful employment. ASSESSMENT 1. Professional Resume-50 Points One page typed resume including the following information (as appropriate) in a professional format: objective, education, work experience, honors/awards, related coursework, skills, and references. Use professional resume paper and do not exceed one page. 2. Cover Letter-50 Points Your cover letter reveals vital information about your personality and your ability to write. It also gives you a chance to specifically focus your background to a particular position and make your application stand out from the rest by displaying the knowledge that you have about the company. It allows you to fine tune the focus of your resume to each position that you apply for. The letter should be written to an individual at a company where you would like to actually apply for a job. The letter may include components such as the following: opening statement stating the position being applied for and how you found out about it; explanations of why you should be hired; and a closing statement with follow up information. The letter should be typed on resume paper and in a proper business format. It should not exceed one page in length. 4. Informational Interview-100 Points Conduct an informational interview with a professional in the hospitality industry with a career in an area of interest to you. Spend at least 20 minutes interviewing the individual. Summarize your findings and type a 3-5 page paper describing your experience and what you learned from the interview. The paper should include the name, title, address and company of the hospitality professional interview; date, time and location of the interview; and summary of the information gained from the interview. In addition to the paper turn in a list of questions used in guiding your interview. 5. Final examination 200 Points Page 2
3 GRADING Students will be evaluated by papers, presentations, participation and examinations. Grades will be assigned using the following weights: Professional Resume Cover Letter Informational Interview Final Exam 50 Points 50 Points 100 Points 200 Points TOTAL POINTS 400 Points Grades will, in part, be assigned relative to total class performance, although students can assure themselves of a specific grade by accumulating the following total points: A B C D F Page 3
4 CLASS POLICIES Policies on Unannounced Quizzes and Class Attendance, Participation and Late Assignments There will be no unannounced quizzes. Class and laboratory attendance is mandatory for all HRMT classes and only official university excused absences (please refer to the Tiger Cub) supported by the relevant documentation will be accepted by Faculty for non-attendance. All supporting documentation must be date stamped and turned into the relevant faculty member at the beginning of the next class (no late excuses will be accepted). Students will be permitted ONE unexcused absence per class, per semester. Each class missed thereafter without an official university approved excuse and supporting documentation will result in a letter grade deduction (one letter grade per class missed) at the end of each semester. In the event that a student misses more than three classes without an official university approved excuse and/or supporting documentation, this will result in an automatic fail grade for the class. While missed work, including exams, may be made up with an official university approved excuse (as defined in the Tiger Cub), make up laboratory classes are not available. Late assignments will not be accepted after the due date other than with an approved and stamped university excuse Academic Responsibility All portions of the Auburn University honesty code (Title XII) found in the Tiger Cub apply in this class. Special Accommodations for Students with Disabilities Students who need special accommodations should make an appointment to discuss the Accommodation Memo during scheduled office hours as soon as possible. If scheduled office hours conflict with classes, please arrange an alternate appointment time.
