A dynamic and professional board of directors has a collective responsibility to ensure that each member is contributing positively, able to perform effectively and ready to help lead the organisation. New directors will need to understand their role and how to be more effective, established directors will need to keep up to date with the latest thinking and trends, and the whole board will need to understand the implications and relevance of corporate governance in order to operate effectively. 3 Certificate in Company Direction Modules Role of the Director and the Board 2 days Benefits for you and your Organisation By attending this course you will: Gain an in-depth view of the key duties, roles and legal responsibilities of the modern director Understand the essential differences between direction, management and ownership Examine the Board s role in corporate governance and learn how to improve board effectiveness Understand the legal status of a company and other organisations and implications of the Company Act 2006 Director s Role in Strategy and Marketing 3 days Key Benefits to you and your Organisation By attending this course you will: Gain a clear understanding of the director s role in the development of an effective strategy Examine how your board formulates, implements and monitors its business and marketing strategies Appreciate the strategic importance of a clear purpose as provided by vision, mission and values Conduct an effective situation appraisal and evaluate the relationship between the internal and external environment of the organisation Understand the means by which strategic options may be generated and evaluated to arrive at the strategy that will deliver the vision Finance for Non-Financial Directors 3 days Key Benefits to you and your Organisation By attending this course you will gain the knowledge and skills to: Identify the financial role and responsibilities of directors Interpret financial statements in accordance with accounting principles and standards Establish the financial health of a business using accepted financial ratios Distinguish between management accounts and the statutory financial reports of a company Differentiate between the various sources of finance available to a company and their relative advantages and disadvantages Interpret the key components of capital investment appraisal Leadership for Directors 2 days Benefits for you and your Organisation By attending this course you will gain an understanding of the key competencies required to be effective leaders at board level: The concepts of leadership and followership, and considers how leadership can be defined and understood in relation to the director s role of the board Techniques for developing a greater awareness of oneself and of the motivation and behaviour of others, and how this awareness can contribute to inspirational leadership How leaders can help to build and sustain high-performing teams, including the board itself How the director s leadership behaviours help to create the culture which enables the organisation to achieve its strategic objectives and to respond effectively to crisis and change How leaders create influence and impact within and beyond the organisation through effective stakeholder relations and an understanding of the organisation in its wider context Schedule The Certificate and Diploma in Company Direction are structured to minimise the time spent away from the demands of your business. To obtain the Certificate in Company Direction delegates must complete 10 days of course attendance at Loughborough University, and then pass the examination. Having completed the full Certificate programme, the Diploma in Company Direction is gained by attending an intensive 3-day course followed by examination. A list of venues will be supplied on application. The full programme plus examinations must be completed within a two-year period to be awarded the qualification. Alternatively, modules can be taken as one-off short courses. The modules run from 9am to 5pm. Overnight accommodation is not required. However, should delegates wish to stay overnight, accommodation is available at the University s own 4-star hotel ( or at a local hotel of their choice. How you are taught The Certificate and Diploma in Company Direction are based on a blended learning principle a set of modules combining focussed short courses with e-learning, making them the most time-efficient way to keep you up to date with your changing responsibilities as a director. Teaching is delivered through group activities, using interactive materials and the critical review of case studies. All certificate courses are supported by post-course e-learning. The IoD s Learning Zone offers delegates various online tools to assist with their exam revision and to reinforce the knowledge gained during the face-to-face element of the workshops. Who should attend Directors, including SME directors and those of ownermanaged companies or family businesses, newly appointed directors and senior executives shortly to become directors
4 Fees IoD Members Non Members Certificate Course (10 days) Full payment in advance 7½% discount Day rate for individual Certificate courses The cost of the programme includes tuition and programme materials, as well as refreshments and lunch. Overnight accommodation however is not included in the fees. VAT is not applicable to tuition fees. Cancellation and Transfer In the event of a cancellation or transfer, requests must be received 20 working days prior to the commencement of each course. Where requests are received between 10 and 20 working days 50% of the fee will be forfeited. If less than 10 working days notice of cancellation is given, all fees are forfeited. Please note that in the event of a transfer to another centre a transference fee of 100 per module day is payable. Funding Sources of funding for business training are constantly changing, but pockets do exist. Please contact us for details.
