1 UAMS University Development 2014Training Schedule January June 2014 Leadership Boot Camp This class is offered on a regular basis throughout the year. Topics include: Leadership Overview, UAMS, Dynamics and Culture, UAMS Policies, Procedures, and Processes, Leadership Communication, and Leadership Development. All new supervisors, managers, directors, and other leaders are required to complete this course within the first 3 months in their role. Leadership Essentials The Leadership Essentials Program, for managers, department heads, and other interested employees, is offered on a quarterly basis to develop and enhance leadership skills. Opportunities are provided to tap into an assortment of expertise, experiences, and resources of others from around the campus. Assessment tools and professional development plans are used to help identify personal strengths and address barriers that may impact relationships and work productivity. Management Academy Management Academy/Leadership Challenge is for new and experienced leaders who want to explore five fundamental practices that lead to extraordinary leadership achievements. This 8-month leadership program will combine theory, professional application, and best practices. Leadership Institute The UAMS Leadership Institute, for director level leaders, will develop executive leadership competencies in order to help leaders reach their full potential. This 10-month leadership program will combine leadership best practices with a leadership project that will impact the UAMS mission. Leadership Development In addition to the training opportunities listed above, UAMS offers comprehensive leadership development programs for all levels of leaders. Link: Bargna An Intercultural Experience Interested in learning about different cultures? Like an opportunity to participate in a cross-cultural activity? Wondering if you can become more aware of cultural differences and behaviors? Come explore all this and more as we create an experience for you to discover different aspects of intercultural awareness, cross-cultural socialization, challenges in dealing with different patient audiences and diversity management. This will be a lecture-free training session and 100% participation. This course is offered in collaboration with the Campus Diversity Manager. January 29, pm Page 1

2 Behavioral Interviewing This training will guide you through the process of how to structure behavioral interviews including which questions are appropriate and not appropriate to ask and how to elicit meaningful responses. You will also learn how to communicate expectations of the job position during the interview and gain an understanding that the interview process is a time to market the organization to everyone your interviewing. Change Management The immortal words of Bob Dylan, The times they are a changin and Buffalo Springfield, There s something happening here, what it is ain t exactly clear certainly apply to UAMS. Change is one of the most important issues facing organizations today. Successful groups view change as inevitable; their emerging leaders embrace and master changes effectively. This course provides the skills, strategies and knowledge to adapt, create and implement change, and help move employees toward a new and positive direction. Coaching, Mentoring, and Positive Feedback Coaching and mentoring share similarities that enable others to achieve their full potential. This course will focus on how to empower others to action for continued personal and professional growth. Learn key steps to create an environment that fosters reflection, critical thinking, competency, and skills that support positive outcomes. January 16, April 17, Communication in the Workplace In this workshop, participants will learn the concepts of effective interpersonal communication and develop necessary skills to communicate successfully in the workplace. This course will focus on understanding the nature communication and common communication issues and developing communication skills including empathy, perspective-taking & non-verbal behavior. 4 hours Page 2

3 Conducting Performance Evaluations that Count This training will guide you through the process of effective performance management including performance planning, ongoing feedback, employee input, performance evaluation, and the performance review. Goal-setting, communication techniques, and useful tools will be discussed. 4 hours Creating Multimedia Presentations - PowerPoint Would you like to add creative and interesting media to your PowerPoint Presentations? This class will teach you the principles behind multimedia design and the proper techniques for adding media to your presentations. You will learn how to add audio and narration, video, and images. In addition, you will learn how to create video segments from your multimedia presentations Creating Presentations with Prezi Have you ever looked at your standard PowerPoint presentations and said to yourself "Gee, I wish I could make these boring old slides more interactive"? Prezi is a presentation software and storytelling tool that enables users to present their ideas on a "virtual canvas", which enables users to create presentations that are more interactive, fluid, and responsive Creating Presentations with Prezi Advanced Prerequisite: Creating Presentations with Prezi In this class students will continue to work on their Prezi and also learn how to upload images, add audio from a file, and insert a video either from a saved file or via a link. Students will also learn to edit the font, text and background color of their Prezi presentations. Offered On demand only Critical Thinking for Problem Solving and Decision Making How do you develop evidence to support your views and ideas? What is your personal thinking style? Learn how to systematically analyze a target problem in a fair-minded way, weigh alternatives, and design systematic plans of action. This interactive course will involve groups work to improve reasoning abilities, challenge assumptions, consider impact and consequences, and make better-informed decisions. 4 Crucial Conversations Part I & II When stakes are high, opinions vary, and emotions run strong, you can avoid crucial conversations and suffer the consequences; handle them poorly and suffer the consequences; or attend this course and discover how to communicate best when it matters most. You will learn how to step up to difficult and important conversations, say what's on your mind, and achieve positive resolutions. This session will include topics such as planning for optimum performance, ongoing evaluation and feedback, coaching for professional development and disciplinary actions. 3 hours Emotional & Social Intelligence Toby Keith, country singer, sings, I wanna talk about me, wanna talk about I, wanna talk about number one Explore your own self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management as it relates to your work. Would you like to recognize your emotions, determine what they tell you, and realize how they affect you and the people around you before you find yourself in a situation that you are unprepared for? Recognizing and improving the connection between emotions and actions is crucial to business and personal success. Come develop and enhance the emotional, social, and relationship skills that positively impact your work; increase effective leadership skills; and build more productive relationships - and in doing so, tap into a whole new level of achievement in your career. 5 Employee Performance Evaluation Training This training will provide employees with instructions on how to use the new Online Performance Evaluation system to complete their self-evaluation. This system will promote two-way communication between the employee and manager, foster positive change and increase momentum toward achieving individual and organizational goals. Employees 1 hour HR Law Managing people effectively includes understanding how a wide variety of laws affect you, the organization, and employees who work for you. This class is designed to help managers understand the legal responsibilities that come with being in a position of leadership. Some of the topics covered are: individual liability, discrimination, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, protected groups, harassment, ADA, FMLA, retaliation, hiring, termination, bullying, and proper disciplinary action. This is a required training on employment law/legal literacy for all UAMS leadership (i.e. employees who have direct reports or are in a supervisory position). This in class session is intended for new leaders or leaders who did not attend this session in Note: This training is MANDATORY for managers! - REQUIRED 3 hours HR Roundtables/HR Informational Series Each month, the UAMS Office of Human Resources conducts an informational series for managers and HR professionals titled, HR Roundtable for. These sessions cover information relevant to and requested by HR managers across UAMS. Remote sites are welcome to join the discussion via interactive video. 1 hour HTML: Coding for Beginners What is HTML? Hypertext Markup Language is the main markup language for creating web pages and other information that can be displayed in a web browser. HTML enables you to code information into a text editor and create websites and webpages from scratch. This class will introduce beginners to HTML and the use of HTML code to produce websites. Ice Cream is Hot and Meat is Cold Cultural Competence Intercultural communication what does that mean? You ve heard of island time or corporate time but have you heard of the vote of thanks or a sevusevu? How does culture play a part in the workplace especially, in terms of patient care? Interested in discovering how those differences and behaviors influence your actions and reactions to situations? This introductory course explores different cultural contexts and expectations. with a patient perspective Page 5

6 The Influencer and Crucial Accountability Pre-requisite: Crucial Conversations Whether it is disappointments, broken promises or violated expectations, holding others accountable is not easy. This interactive course will include individual and group work to discover causes behind problems and use processes to address accountability and improve relationships with candid and respectful dialogue, regardless of position or personality. Post Crucial Conversations attendees January 22, April 17, Intro to Project Management This introductory training in project management will help you deliver smarter solutions on time and within budget. Designed to help you keep projects on track even in the toughest, most unpredictable times, this course includes information regarding creating a project plan, assessing project risk, managing multiple projects, managing enterprise-wide initiatives, scheduling, controlling, managing, and measuring project outcomes. with a patient perspective Intro to Project Management Online This ONLINE version of Intro to Project Management provides you with the same information as the original on-sight Intro to Project Management course. Thanks to the new online format participants are provided with the ease and convenience of being able to navigate the entire course at their own discretion. Certified Project Management Specialist Cliff Stephenson provides participants with valuable information regarding how to design, develop, and manage projects. This online version of Introduction to Project Management includes information regarding creating a project plan, assessing project risk, managing multiple projects, managing enterprise-wide initiatives, scheduling, controlling, managing, and measuring project outcomes. On demand Self-paced Professionalism and Its Impact on Office Culture Professionalism is expected of everyone that we work with on a daily basis. But are these expectations being met? We will examine influential factors affecting your team s office culture. This session will include topics such as collaboration, time management, employee conflict, and client-centered communication, among others. Tips and key strategies for promoting a healthy office culture will be discussed Page 6

7 Professional Presentations Do you struggle when it comes to presenting in front of others? Do you need help ensuring your message is clear, organized and relevant? Can you effectively integrate technology in with presentations? Learn and practice techniques to improve presentation skills. This course will include an opportunity to present information and receive critique from others. All participants may receive a copy of an individual video tape for personal review. February 7, am June 11, pm Social Media & Professional Networking Social media isn t just for our kids or personal use. Numerous professional organizations have begun to adopt and utilize social media as an effective communication and networking tool. This course examines the appropriate use of social media in a professional environment such as UAMS. We will examine the various social media options that are available as well as discuss appropriate measures for incorporating these tools such as professional chat rooms, networking, and recruitment possibilities. Succession Planning 3 times/year We need people who are qualified and ready to carry on the strategic plans of the organization when others move up, retire, or move on. Succession planning identifies critical competencies and characteristics needed at all levels to support the future direction of the organization. This type of planning includes establishing measurements to guide and evaluate succession results. This course will provide an overview, benefits, case study application, and key steps for successful succession planning. March 27, Developing Team Standards High performing teams agree on certain standards that become non-negotiables in their efforts to reach successful outcomes. This training facilitates a step-by-step process for developing team standards, identifying communication patterns that support the standards, and discuss accountability plans Teams On Demand 1 hour Page 7

8 Team Building Teamwork is the fuel that drives the ability to work together toward achieving common goals. Various factors can support or block team performance including trust, accountability, and commitment. This interactive course will include information and skill-building exercises on team characteristics, dynamics and personality styles, stages of team development, communication, barriers, problem-solving/decisionmaking, and sustainability. March 13, :30-12:30 Location: IDW 214 Team Diversity We each have different work styles and strengths that we bring to our team. This training will examine four different work personality styles, the strengths of each, and the communication preferences for each. Awareness for the need of and respect for all work personality styles will be examined 2 Hours Team Foundations There are certain foundations that are needed for team success. This training will examine five foundations of teams and how to prevent a breakdown of these foundations. This is a great eye-opener to see which areas are strong and which areas need improvement. 2 Hours Transforming Conflict into Productive Outcomes In today s workplace, conflict can be especially disruptive to the productivity, satisfaction, and safety of employees and to the overall effectiveness of the organization. In this course you will identify what conflict is, determine your preferred conflict style, acquire skills and resources to address conflict in difficult situations, and constructively transform conflict into productive outcomes. 9 The Influence of Positive Impressions and Customer Service - monthly First encounters and ongoing interactions leave lasting impressions. How is your report card with our patients, visitors, and employees? Discuss how to maintain respectful relationships and meet customer expectations even when difficulties arise and ideas clash. This course includes direct UAMS observations and feedback from participants. Offered; January 16, pm February 20, am March 27, pm April 16, noon May 14, pm June 11, noon The Manager s Guide to HR (Online) The new MGHR Online will provide participants with the information needed to enact UAMS most common human resource practices and procedures. The course will be facilitated by various HR representatives presenting information on such topics as Recruiting, Compensation, Leave Policies, Employee Services, Employee Assistance Program, Workers Compensation and Progressive Discipline. It is recommended for new supervisors, HR managers, and those wanting a refresher on these important HR topics. Additionally, the new Online format will be more convenient and accessible for busy UAMS professionals who wish to have access to various HR topics when they need it. Online Self-Paced Page 9
