South Wilts Grammar School Work Experience Year 10

There have already been opportunities within school for your daughters to experience the world of work in different years Take Your Daughter to Work Year 8 Industry Days Year 9

Year 10 Work Experience will take place between 6 th- 10 th June 2016

The National Picture Many schools have stopped offering Work Experience at Key Stage 4 Clearly identified funding for schools to offer it has been withdrawn We feel it is still very valuable

Why do Work Experience? Employability and key skills: insights into skills and attitudes required by employers; and an opportunity to develop, practise and demonstrate key skills in a work setting, in particular, working with others, communication and improving own learning and performance.

Careers education and guidance: better understanding of changes in the world of work and the implications these have for your own careers.

Personal and social development: development of increased maturity, with improvements in aspects such as motivation, self-confident and interpersonal skills;

So even if the placement isn t in the exact area your daughter wants to pursue for a career at this stage, it will benefit her for many reasons and make some VALUABLE decisions

The Work Experience on Offer There are two possible routes: Route 1: Private placement You may already have contacts through which you can organise your own placement. If you have, you and your daughter will need to complete a pink Education Business Partnership Private Arrangement Form which will be available shortly.

Health and safety checks Health and safety checks have to be completed on all placements. These take time to process and the necessary forms must be handed in by the 14 th March for out of Wiltshire placements If your daughter intends to do her work experience in London, then her application MUST be in by 15 th February as these health and safety checks take a long time to process all others in by 18 th April.

WARNING!!! To students There is no guarantee that out of area placements will be heath and safety checked in time New government policy means there may not be a local agency to carry out the checks at all out of area The earlier you apply the more likely they will be done Without a health and safety check and signatures from the employer, and parents your daughter will not be able to go on her placement If she has no placement she has to be in school

Route 2:On-line database An on-line application system We share this with other schools who may be on WE at the same time For the most popular choices (ie veterinary practices) students may also need to write a letter of application so that Mrs Taylor and myself can recommend the most suitable candidate to apply for the job.

The system has a 5 Stage Process 3. Employer decides

The system has a 5 Stage Process The placement is not guaranteed until this final stage and employers may take time to do this Students may need to find an alternative if the placement is not confirmed

Using the system Once the system is live students will have time in the computer rooms to select and apply for a job placement They will get detailed instructions and a log in They will need to monitor the progress of their applications by logging on to the system regularly and applying for another job if the first is unsuccessful

They are told to consult their parents as you will want to consider if the placement is suitable and if travel arrangements are feasible If more than one person applies for the same job the school will decide who will go forward through the process Popular jobs will be snapped up quickly so once the system goes live they should not delay we will look at all requests after Half Term They can access the programme at home as well as at school

If they are interested in a placement at Salisbury District Hospital, their application MUST be processed through their Personnel Department. You cannot arrange a placement with a member of your family or friend who works there. There are no pre -16 clinical placements on the Wards at the hospital, but other places on offer include: laboratories, pharmacy, nursery school, the leisure club, gardening, IT, catering, library and administration work.

All completed application forms for the Hospital must be with them by 30 th October ( in Half Term) so they therefore need to act immediately if they would like a placement there Students see Mrs Taylor if they are interested in work at the hospital Many Primary Schools will not accept expupils they will often get a better experience going somewhere new.

If they choose a placement with less than 25 hours, they need to find an additional placement or attend school for the remainder of the necessary hours Work Experience seems a long way away but there is so much to get done this year. We want to give you plenty of time to try and sort out a really suitable and enjoyable placement Students must take the initiative, this will not get organised by itself

Work Experience at South Wilts In order to maintain our commitment to work experience in the current financial climate we have to Ask for a voluntary contribution of towards the cost of the administration of the scheme Charge an additional 30 for any out of Wiltshire placements Many Hampshire placements count as out of area eg Andover and Fordingbridge Charge for late or cancelled placements 20

Careers Advice If you or your daughter would like to discuss work experience and any aspect of a potential future career, Mrs Mackay is available in school 4 days per week
