2 About CDRD The Centre for Drug Research and Development Headquartered in Vancouver, The Centre for Drug Research and Development (CDRD) is Canada s national drug development and commercialization centre a global bridge that translates discoveries into innovative therapeutic products and improved health outcomes. In collaboration with our partners from academia, industry, government and foundations, we identify, validate, and advance promising discoveries, and transform them into validated investments. The Academy currently encompasses three distinct streams: The Executive Institute, the Post-Graduate Institute, and the Undergraduate Institute. Each provides a customized training program to ensure that the Canadian life sciences sector has the scientific and management talent to lead the world. 3 PROGRAM OVERVIEW The CDRD Academy s Executive Institute is a 10-month, focused executive development program custom designed to ensure that the Canadian life sciences sector has the management talent it needs to lead the world. Successfully scaling Canadian life sciences companies, and growing them into strong, multiproduct anchors, requires leaders to think in more complex, systematic, and strategic ways. To address this pressing need, CDRD has created this unique program open to a maximum of 20 executive-level life sciences professionals annually. Recognizing that diversity is Canada s strength, priority and particular focus will be given to addressing the gender gap within Canadian life sciences leadership, and to building opportunities for under-represented groups. The program is delivered in collaboration with global training leaders, the not-for-profit Center for Creative Leadership (CCL). Executive training is CCL s sole focus, and has been all they do for the past 50 years. Because of their track record, they have been ranked among the world s Top 5 institutions for executive education by Bloomberg Businessweek, and among the Top 10 by the Financial Times. The program that CDRD and CCL have custom-designed combines researched and proven best practices/principles with targeted industry topics to take participants on a leadership journey. Using a blend of in-depth assessments, simulations, challenging assignments and executive coaching, training is focused on current (and future) issues and company challenges, making it highly relevant to the learner s real work learning while applying. Executives in the program engage in development that is focused on their unique leadership needs, enabling them to maximize personal leadership power to accelerate their organization s goals, commitment, alignment and results. They will focus on key leadership competencies such as: validating and articulating a vision, leading outwardly, communication, influence, selfawareness and executive image. They will delve into their high-level challenges. They will gain a clear view of their impact on their organization and: Develop clear action plans around organizational challenges and priorities; Validate or re-cast organizational vision; Clarify their leadership effectiveness within the organization, and in comparison to other senior executives; Improve external influence skills with boards, shareholders, partners and critical stakeholders; Enhance their executive image and communication skills. 3

4 PROGRAM ELEMENTS PARTICIPANT ASSESSMENT & PREPARATION As the CDRD Executive Institute s program is tailored to the specific needs of each selected participant, comprehensive pre-program activities will take place over July-August, and include: A series of web-based assessment surveys completed by participants, direct reports, peers and superiors; A 60-minute call between the participant and a CCL executive coach to debrief on the findings of the assessment, and to draw out specific individual goals; Pre-reading for workshops. FACE-TO-FACE WORKSHOPS Highly relevant, research-based content to expand knowledge and address essential challenges will be delivered through five multi-day workshops beginning in September 2018, and concluding in May 2019 when a special capstone event will be held to mark the successful completion of the program. WORKSHOP DATES AND LOCATIONS ARE: September 12-13, 2018 Vancouver November 19-21, 2018 Montreal January 21-22, 2019 Toronto March 11-12, 2019 Vancouver May 7, 2019 Toronto (to coincide with the Bloom Burton & Co. Healthcare Investor Conference). NOTE: PARTICIPANTS ARE REQUIRED TO ATTEND EACH OF THESE WORKSHOPS IN PERSON, AND WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR OWN TRAVEL, ACCOMMODATION, AND OTHER RELATED ARRANGEMENTS AND EXPENSES. The instructor/participant ratio for the workshops is 1:1. Content will center around themes of Personal Branding, Strategic Leadership, the Culture of Innovation, and include CCL s unique Looking Glass Experience, a complex business simulation designed to help individuals understand how they lead and influence others in an organization, and to: Develop the ability to recognize opportunities and avoid pitfalls, balance tactical concerns with strategic possibilities, and become better decision makers; Understand strengths and developmental needs, and set specific goals to successfully navigate complex leadership situations; Gain self-awareness on how to best adapt to complex organizational challenges and the effect they have on productivity; Communicate more effectively at all levels, and receive constructive feedback; Receive direct, applicable insight of the complexities involved in managing a global enterprise. WORKSHOPS WILL ALSO INCLUDE SPECIFIC DISCUSSION ON: Business operations The heart of all other challenges in the complex and uncertain world of life sciences; Strategic issues Setting and realizing vision, direction and goals; Preparing for growth, and managing change Both day-to-day, and in the long-term; Boundary spanning Leading across levels, silos, cultures, backgrounds and interests; Individual impact Understanding and adjusting leadership style, and effectively building trust and influence. 4

5 EXECUTIVE COACHING A great coach can be the secret weapon behind professional success. They have the right words and the right questions at the right time to help executives adjust their practices to achieve greater levels of success. They expand perspective, inspire, and provide challenge and support like no one else can. The CDRD Executive Institute is deeply personalized through seven hours of one-on-one sessions with a CCL executive coach, identified from their worldwide team, who aligns with the participant s development needs and personality. Through a research-based approach, coaches will help guide participants in their personal assessment, goal setting, integration of the learnings into their own experiences, and in planning ongoing steps in their development. ACCOUNTABILITY GROUPS Peer Power Formal Accountability Peer Groups will be formed to provide participants a vehicle to gain broader perspectives on issues they are experiencing, and to add depth to feedback and key ideas, while offering extensive long-term networking opportunities to provide connections, ideas and support. Accountability Group sessions (as well as ongoing inter-sessional connecting) and related assignments will focus on tackling key organization challenges, and participants will network and learn from fellow leaders with comparable real-world experiences and familiar challenges. ELEARNING Anytime, anywhere access and opportunities for short, intense learning centered on leadership/skillbuilding for complex, volatile environments will also be offered through complementary on-line training. These digital resources will allow for learning in the work environment, and for putting the lessons learned immediately into practice. These resources as well as all course content and materials, and your personal documents will be combined into a centralized Learning Management System for easy access and reference. POST-GRADUATION ACTIVITIES Continual Learning Leadership development is a journey that doesn t end after 10 months. The CDRD Executive Institute offers ongoing resources to apply and sustain graduates learning experience. These include: REFLECTIONS, an assessment to measure skills and behavior progress, completed after the program; A one-hour phone session with their CCL coach to asses ongoing needs and goals; Access to webinars, elearning, and micro-learning resources for one year. To enhance ongoing executive development, program graduates will also have the opportunity to teach topics about which they are passionate to co-workers and others, and to continue their involvement through extended peer groups, and by becoming mentors for new Executive Institute cohorts. 5

Content is framed in the context of the life sciences industry, and based on extensive research and comparable data on what works. A proven learning design is led by an elite faculty with extensive experience working with executives. The thought leaders, practitioners, and educators who join us are committed to providing fresh, thought-provoking content and inspiration, while also focusing on specific leadership competencies; The experience is designed to create customizable development paths to meet your specific needs with Individual leader development placed in the context of current corporate needs. Exercises will allow for course learning to then be applied in real-time, to current business challenges. Small learning teams will allow for reflection on insights gained, and for discussion of business-related issues a unique opportunity for every individual to contribute their own thinking, and collaborate in peer groups to explore how to best apply learnings to themselves, their team, and their organization. 7 PROGRAM COST The market cost of this program would be an estimated $18,000 CDN, but thanks to the generous support of Pfizer Canada, The CDRD Academy is able to offer the Executive Institute with NO FEE* to participants. Participants are responsible only for their own travel, accommodation and other costs related to attending program workshops in Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal, and any other ancillary expenses related to program participation.. * To ensure full their commitment, participants will be required to provide a $5,000 deposit, fully refundable upon successful completion of the program (which requires full participation in ALL workshops and Accountability Group session, and completion of ALL coaching, assessments, and any related assignments APPLICATION CRITERIA & PROCESS The program is open to a maximum of 20 senior career life sciences professionals generally C-level and senior executives in the top three tiers of the organization who have more than 15 years of management experience and leadership responsibility. As The CDRD Academy is firmly committed to addressing issues of gender disparity, and to supporting diversity in the Canadian life sciences sector, specific priority and focus will be given to women and other under-represented groups. Candidate assessment will be based on relative level of experience and accomplishment in the life sciences industry; and approval from your company s CEO is required. Applications will be reviewed, and participants selected by an independent panel of industry experts representing extensive and varied Canadian life sciences experience. As per above, participation requires a full commitment to and engagement in ALL aspects of the complete 10-month program, including any/all assigned workshop or other pre-work or assignments.
