2 Introduction to Management A Historical Perspective on Management To provide you with a brief historical overview of safety management (SM). Current trends that are shaping SM will be presented. SM principles will also be introduced. The National Council s SM system will be presented as a foundation for effectively managing safety and health efforts. z Recognize significant events in the safety, health and management fields and determine ow these events influence your organization s SM focus. z Identify the management focus and the safety and health focus that best describe your organization. z Identify trends that influence safety and health efforts. z Recognize fundamental principles of SM. z Identify the principles of SM used in your organization and explain how they are practiced. Initiating a Management System To introduce you to the characteristics of an effective safety management (SM) system. It provides you with the steps for creating a comprehensive SM system. Requirements for initiating a comprehensive SM system will be presented. You will have the opportunity to complete an SM system assessment to determine strengths and areas needing improvement in your organization. z Identify characteristics of an effective SM system. z Identify the five steps in the continuous improvement process needed for a successful SM system. z Recognize the nine elements of a comprehensive SM system. Defining Roles and Responsibilities To provide you with an opportunity to analyze the roles and responsibilities of the safety professional. You will differentiate between line and staff safety management (SM) roles and responsibilities. You will identify the skills and knowledge that safety professionals need in order to be successful. 3 Adaptive for Professionals Adaptive for Professionals To introduce the Adaptive Model and provide multiple opportunities for participants to practice using the model throughout the session. Adaptive is based in the belief that there is no one right leadership style for every situation. To influence and motivate others, leaders must recognize the performance readiness level of the person or team the leader is attempting to influence and to accurately adapt their leadership style. z Learn how to your adapt leadership style to the performance readiness of others and the demands of the task. z Practice adaptive leadership. z Discuss motivation. z Begin to create a plan for working with individual team members. Using Interviewing and Consulting Skills To introduce you to interviewing and consulting skills as they relate to safety management. You will explore the different types of interviewing and identify steps for conducting effective interviews and consultations. z Identify the different types of interviews safety professionals conduct. z Recognize ways to create a positive interviewing experience. z Identify six effective listening techniques and develop appropriate interview questions. Influencing and Managing Change To provide you with strategies to create organizational and individual change. z Identify the four phases of change and the steps needed to introduce change. z Recognize common mistakes made in managing the change process. z Examine types of resistance to change and how to address them. 4

5 Strategic Thinking and Managing Change Strategic Thinking To prepare participants to view strategic thinking as an ongoing process rather than a one-time event. Participants will explore strategies to gather and analyze information and estimate the changes that must be made today in order to generate desired results tomorrow. z Understand what strategic thinking is and why it s valuable. z Recognize the personal traits, behaviors and attitudes, and cognitive capacities that strategic thinkers demonstrate. z View strategic thinking as a process. z Apply strategic thinking skills: seeing the big picture; identifying relationships, patterns, and trends; thinking creatively; analyzing information; prioritizing your actions; and making trade-offs. Managing Change To provide guidance, step-by-step procedures, and the complex skills required for effective change leadership. You will address how to maintain morale and performance levels in the face of disruption, such as shifting client expectations, new technologies, layoffs, and increased competition. z Identify change management principles and current change management models. z Discuss the impact of change on employees and why leaders should be concerned. z Recognize how people respond to change and address resistance to change. z Apply a change management process and a variety of change management tools. Project Management for Professionals Project Management for Professionals To introduce the project management process through experiential learning. Students are placed in teams to plan and execute a project. This is not a computer simulation but rather a hands-on activity. You will learn to use PM tools to set and achieve measurable objectives, estimate project time and costs, determine project scope, manage resource requirements and control results. z Recognize project management methodology. z Learn the five process groups and how they overlap. z Define a project by Time, Cost, Quality, Scope. z Increase collaboration and effectiveness of project teams, leadership, and stakeholders. 5

6 Continuous Improvement Managing the and Health Audit Process To provide an overview of the safety and health audit process. You will examine the different types of audits, the steps for preparing an audit, and the responsibilities of an audit team leader. Determine how to assess elements of the safety management system. z Differentiate between an audit and an inspection. z Identify the elements you currently audit in your organization. z Identify activities performed in the safety and health audit process. z Recognize the roles and responsibilties of an audit team leader, an audit team and an audited group. Performance Measurements To provide an overview of safety performance measurements and criteria for developing a safety measurement system. Apply safety management and measurement concepts and processes to a case study analysis. z Identify safety performance measurements used in your organization. z Identify tools for measuring safety and recognize the advantages and disadvantages of each. z Apply safety management and measurement concepts and processes to the analysis of a case study. Business Case for a Management System To provide you with the tools needed to present a business case for a safety management (SM) system including the budgeting process. Learn how to prepare a cost-benefit analysis. z Identify benefits of effectively managing an organization s safety and health efforts. z Differentiate between insured and uninsured costs. z Calculate a total case rate. z Conduct a cost-benefit analysis and describe why it is important. Problem Solving and Decision Making To introduce you to processes and tools that can be used in effectively solving safety or health problems, as well as assist the manager in the decision-making process. z List and use six steps for solving problems. z Identify and use a cause-and-effect diagram as a problem analysis tool. z Use brainstorming as a tool for finding solutions. 6

You will examine the application of leadership and management principals and practices that achieve results through communicating effectively with others at critical times. The course uses interactive exercises, video demonstrations and rehearsals. z Conduct effective coaching discussions and communicate performance expectations. z Resolve performance problems before they escalate. z Reward and reinforce positive performance. z Enhance teamwork through proficient management. Ethical Decision Making A central part of being a professional is the commitment to act ethically in the execution of one s professional duties. Ethical behavior provides protection from civil suits, from damage to reputation, and from loss of professional licensure.
