It will examine your understanding of your organisation s vision/mission, purpose, objectives, structure and opportunities for professional and career development. UV30799_v7

5 Understanding the employing organisation Learning outcomes On completion of this unit you will: 1. Understand the structure of the organisation 2. Understand key aims and objectives of the organisation 3. Understand your own contribution to the organisation s key aims and objectives 4. Understand the opportunities for entry, professional development and progression within the organisation Evidence requirements 1. Working environment There is no requirement for you to be observed/assessed in a work environment. 2. Teaching practice There is no requirement for you to undertake teaching practice. 3. Achieving assessment criteria There must be valid, authentic and sufficient evidence for all assessment criteria. Holistic assessment is encouraged and one piece of evidence may be used to meet the requirements of more than one assessment criterion. 4. Knowledge outcomes There must be evidence that you possess all the knowledge and understanding listed in the Knowledge section of this unit. This evidence may include projects, assignments, case studies, reflective accounts, oral/written questioning and/or other forms of evidence. 5. 11 Unit content This section provides guidance on the recommended knowledge and skills required to enable you to achieve each of the learning outcomes in this unit. Your tutor/assessor will ensure you have the opportunity to cover all of the unit content. Outcome 1: Understand the structure of the organisation Main functions in the organisation: Types of functions an organisation may have, own organisation s functions, different structural forms (e.g. hierarchical, flat/organic, matrix/project teams), staffing and organisation, team structures within each function, liason between different functions. Communication channels: Patterns of communication (wheel, circle, Y, chains, all channel), types of meetings, frequency of meetings, accountability. Lines of control and accountability: Different management styles (e.g. autocratic, democratic, laissez-faire), organisational structure (e.g. hierarchical, flat/organic, matrix/project team). Outcome 2: Understand key aims and objectives of the organisation Importance of having a business plan: Reasons for having a business plan, nature of organisational goals (formal and informal goals, consumer goals, product goals, operational goals, secondary goals), risk of not having a business plan. Organisations key aims and objectives: Purpose of mission statement, core aims and values, relationship between goals, mission and values. Measuring achievement of key aims and objectives: Goals as a standard of performance, goals as a basis for planning and management control, publication internally/externally of achievements against key performance indicators, staff performance, appraisal systems. Identifying organisations key performance indicators: Organisations key aims and objectives, internal and/ or external publication of achievements, organisations self assessment report (SAR). UV

12 Outcome 3: Understand your own contribution to the organisation s key aims and objectives Importance of an organisation managing staff performance: Staff performance appraisal systems, goals helping to develop commitment of individuals and groups, individual/group contribution to organisational self assessment report (SAR). Describing the objectives of job roles: Making strategic planning operational, allocation of objectives/key performance indicators, how the organisation manages staff performance (appraisal, recording, monitoring), methods used by own organisation to improve staff performance, disciplinary procedure. Explain the objective of own job role and contribute to organisations key aims and objectives: Allocation/cascading objectives/key performance indications from senior management to practitioners, making strategic planning operational. How own performance is evaluated and developed: Practice of staff appraisal, negotiation skills, benefits of staff appraisal system. 13 Outcome 4: Understand the opportunities for entry, professional development and progression within the organisation Explain the importance of continuous professional development (CPD): What constitutes CPD, responsibilities to learner/organisation, employability, professionalism, benefits of CPD, recording CPD. Evaluate the organisation s process for recruitment: Different aspects of recruitment (suitability to do a particular job, sociability, fitting in, compliance with legislation), need for a planned and systematic approach (knowledge of job to be filled, type of person needed, how best to attract a range of suitable applicants, how to assess candidates suitability, need for induction), methods of selection (e.g. peer rating, selection tests, personality questionnaires, group exercises, assessment centre interviews), choice and combination of methods, own experiences of recruitment, benefits of effective recruitment. Evaluate the organisations process for induction: Different methods of staff induction (e.g. familiarisation with polices and practices over short duration/over a period of months, shadowing, team/ paired working, performance reviews), contents of induction (e.g. rules and regulations, familiarisation with culture, methods of operation, personal training and development needs), own experiences of induction, benefits of effective induction. Evaluate the organisations process for training and development: Investors in people (IIP) and commitment to a trained workforce training (e.g. first aid, safeguarding, health and safety, some vocational training as required by the awarding body, governmental requirements), optional training opportunities, recording training and development activities. Evaluate the opportunities and requirements for career progression: Requirements within the organisation for career progression, staff performance, appraisal, internal publication of staff vacancies, job description/skills analysis.
