2 Purpose Support world-class global health research undertaken through new NIHR Global Health Research Units and Groups that will deliver measurable benefits to patients and the public in low and middle-income countries (LMICs). We want to support other nations across the world with our gold standard science and research Nicola Blackwood, Minister for Public Health and Innovation, November 2016

3 What we are looking for Research in any field of applied global health research for the primary benefit of patients and people in LMICs Under-funded, under-researched areas Research excellence Open to all of the UK Collaboration and partnerships with LMICs essential

4 Two levels of funding NIHR Global Health Research Units: Universities and research institutes with an existing track-record of delivering internationally recognised research who wish to consolidate and expand this work (up to 7m, 4 years) NIHR Global Health Research Groups: Existing specialist academic groups who wish to expand into the field of global health, especially in shortage areas of skills (up to 2m, 3 years) Overall 60 million available for this call

5 Selection criteria Vision Strength, including how it fits with global health agenda Research Capacity Existing capacity and/or plans for increasing it Strategy Leadership Trackrecord Strength and feasibility of the strategic plan; governance and programme management Units: globally Groups: nationally Impact Institutional commitment potential for impact translation into policy and practice evidence of high-level commitment and contribution of the host university Partnership Units: existing links Groups: plans to build new links Value for Money Adequately justified budget

6 ODA compliance Need to demonstrate direct and predominant relevance to improving the health needs of those in developing countries Need to outline which country/countries on the DAC will directly benefit Activities that benefit poorest people within countries in the DAC list
