2 The School Bedford Modern School (BMS) is a thriving, independent co-educational day school with more than 1200 students from ages 7 to 18. The School is a very open community, where focus on the individual pervades the ethos. The boys and girls work well together and gain much from sharing different perspectives and approaches to learning and developing life skills. The busy school environment encourages students to be fully committed and involved in all activities. The School has a national reputation for excellence in the performing arts, as well as being current and past national champions in several different sports. Please visit for further information on BMS. Vision and Aims Vision To be the co-educational school of choice in the East of England, with a national reputation for exemplary standard. Aims Individual The individual is at the very heart of who we are and what we do. By developing their skills and character we will support everyone to be the best they can be. Well-being Every interaction with us builds a lifelong sense of mutual fulfilment and engagement. Modern Our innovative forward-thinking approach to excellence in education allows us all to flourish in a rapidly changing world. Environment Market-leading and inspiring environments are created through sustainable investment in our facilities. Community We work together as a caring, unpretentious community to develop tolerance and respect for ourselves and the wider world.

3 Location and Facilities The School is located on the outskirts of Bedford with commanding views of the Bedfordshire countryside. It benefits from excellent road and rail transport links and the journey by train from Bedford to London St Pancras takes approximately 40 minutes. The School is committed to its local community offering resources, facilities, time and expertise where it is needed most. Our facilities are excellent: a separate Junior School, dedicated Sixth Form building, faculties clustered throughout the School and extensive and impressive sports facilities. The School continues to evolve through capital development projects which are imperative for the future success of the School. Following recent completion of a 9.5 million Science Centre, the School has ambitious plans for further development, with a view to providing a premium educational experience for staff and students alike.

4 School Life At BMS, there is a wide and varied curriculum that is responsive to the needs of students and parents. The School offers a premium education appropriate to both boys and girls where the intellectual needs of each student are a priority. Individuals are assessed at entry and those with particular gifts or learning needs are identified and monitored. Students are encouraged to maximise their academic potential whilst optimising their participation in the diverse and inclusive Co-curricular Programme. Pastoral care is integral to the success of the School and all staff are expected to contribute to this supportive culture. It is a particularly friendly, happy and supportive school community. The Harpur Trust The School forms part of the legal entity called the Harpur Trust, which is a charitable company limited by guarantee. The Harpur Trust is governed by a board of 26 trustees, a number of whom then serve, together with other co-opted members, on the School Committee of Governors of BMS. The School Committee is a subcommittee of the Harpur Trust (which meets termly), but has delegated powers to enable much of the day to day business to be governed by them. Trustee approval, based on School Committee recommendations, is required for major capital projects, borrowing, final approval of budgets and fee levels, and approval of any actions that might significantly affect any other school within the Trust. Whilst there is only one legal entity that encompasses all of the Trust's schools, they are expected to operate financially autonomously in respect of operating results and reserves. The Opportunity We are looking for an exceptional leader with significant experience of multidisciplinary management across a broad spectrum of functional areas. A proven record of accomplishment in operational, project and financial management is essential, with an ability to motivate and influence in a collaborative, team-based environment. Previous experience within a school environment is helpful but certainly not a requirement; however, a strong commitment to education is essential. Candidates will be strategic thinkers who appreciate the particular demands of working within the independent sector.
