1 PRESIDENT & CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER MoARTS Launching in Spring 2019, MoARTS (a placeholder name) is set to become an anchor in the pulsating cultural hub at the epicenter of Downtown Brooklyn, and one of the country s few arts centers dedicated to contemporary African Diasporan arts. MoARTS (A NEW ENTITY/A SHARED VISION) MoARTS represents the merging of two well-established Brooklyn-based arts organizations, both deeply committed to advancing the cultural expression of the African Diaspora. For almost thirty years, one predecessors mission has been to deepen appreciation for contemporary performing arts and culture of the African Diaspora and to provide professional and creative opportunities for performing artists of African descent. The second predecessor, founded in 1999, uses the visual arts as a point of departure for exploring new artistic production across a variety of disciplines. Through exhibitions and programming, the organization incites dialogue on pressing social and political issues facing the African Diaspora and fosters a dynamic space for the creation and continuous evolution of culture. Both organizations are well loved and respected by artists, community members, and practitioners in the field. And both institutions bring first voice perspectives to the curation, support, presentation, and production of contemporary African American cultural expression. When both organizations learned of their designations as cultural tenants in the newly built Brooklyn cultural hub at 300 Ashland, their Executive Directors ensued conversations regarding meaningful collaboration. Those discussions progressed to the exploration of a merger. And over the course of the last year, the executive leadership and Boards of the two entities devised a unified and captivating vision for a new Contemporary Arts Center committed to illuminating African Diasporan culture across disciplines, partnerships, and communities local to global.
