Under Artistic Director Rachel O Riordan, Sherman Theatre is now recognised as a major artistic force by audiences and critics nationally and internationally. Our Spring season includes three new Sherman productions Dublin Carol directed by Matthew Xia, the outside London premiere of The Motherf**ker with the Hat and Tremor directed by Sherman Theatre s Associate Director David Mercatali. This is a key role within the organisation, central to helping us to deliver on our ambition to create and present theatre which excites audiences in Cardiff and beyond. Based on a 39 hr week. Due to the nature of the role there will be a requirement to work additional evenings/weekends and bank holidays. There is no overtime paid and hours are worked within the Working Time Directive and in-house agreement with BECTU to not exceed an average of 48 hrs per week over a 52 week period. Sherman Theatre operates a qualifying workplace pension scheme. The successful applicant will be required to provide documentation under the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act Offers of employment are subject to the receipt of references that are satisfactory to Sherman Theatre. The post-holder will be expected to live within commutable distance of the theatre. The post is available immediately.

3 Technical Stage Manager Head of Production & Planning Casual Stage Staff, Staging department work placements. Artistic Director, in house Creative Teams, freelance designers, painters, stage management teams, incoming stage staff, casuals, sub-contractors and Visiting Companies, and the in house technical and production team The Technical Stage Manager advises and supports the Head of Production and Planning in all staging technical matters. The Technical Stage Manager is responsible for providing a high standard of production and technical support for Sherman Theatre s artistic programme, including in-house productions, visiting productions and communities and engagement activities, and for productions on tour as necessary. All members of the Production and Technical team will be expected to deputise for each other and assist other members of the team. Although each member of the Production and Technical team will have in depth knowledge of one or more specific areas (e.g. sound, lighting, staging and rigging), all team members will have some experience and a good working knowledge of all aspects of production and technical work. 1 Productions To liaise with the Head of Production & Planning and visiting staff on all matters relating to staging requirements, and to ensure a safe and efficient technical fitup, run, strike and get out for all Sherman Theatre and Visiting productions (including youth theatre/summer school etc). 1.1 To liaise with the Head of Production and Planning and Senior Electrician regarding the staging / technical requirements and staffing levels for Sherman Theatre and visiting productions; to assist the Head of Production and Planning in checking all technical specifications to ensure that productions can be practically accommodated and that sufficient resources are available to support them; to highlight to the Head of Production and Planning as and when additional support/expenditure will be required.

4 1.2 To liaise with visiting companies to ensure their staging requirements can be met in a timely and cost effective manner and ensure adequate staffing meet the requirements of the production. 1.3 To ensure the safe and efficient running of all visiting company get-ins, fit-ups, performances and get-outs in both performance spaces, liaising with visiting staff to ensure their needs are efficiently met. 1.4 To assist the carpenter with set builds including carpentry and metal work. 1.5 To liaise closely with the Head of Production and Planning and visiting designers and to participate in all design, production progress and other relevant meetings as and when requested. 1.6 To operate equipment, or oversee the operation of equipment by visiting companies or other staff, as required, for the purposes of a rehearsal/performance. 1.7 To provide cover as necessary for all performances in line with the requirements of the show including counterweight flying etc. 1.8 To assist Sherman Theatre and visiting Stage Management teams during rehearsals and performances as required. 2 Staffing and Supervision To supervise casual technical and stage crew as required 2.1 To schedule and supervise casual and visiting technical and stage crew in both theatre spaces, delegating tasks to department members and casuals where appropriate. 2.2 To inform the Head of Production & Planning in advance of any possible additional staffing/overtime costs, including break infringements. 2.3 To ensure that safe working procedures are followed, in both performance areas and in the Workshop, in accordance with the company s Health and Safety policy and any other relevant legislation. 3 Equipment, Vehicles, Maintenance and Security To ensure the safe and efficient operation of all stage and workshop machinery and equipment and the proper maintenance of Company Vehicles. 3.1 To undertake/supervise the day to day maintenance of the workshop, ancillary spaces and stage areas of Sherman Theatre, including three monthly and annual flying system safety checks and checks of all staging equipment including all flying equipment / ladders / tallescopes etc. ensuring that appropriate permits and licences are adhered to (e.g. hot work permit) where relevant. 3.2 To ensure that all necessary record-keeping relating to the safe operation and maintenance of equipment, flying gear and all staging equipment is properly recorded and any defects properly notified.

5 3.3 To advise and support the Head of Production and Planning on all staging and maintenance issues in both performance areas and action accordingly. 3.4 To take responsibility for the maintenance and security of all company vehicles and co-ordinate their use, including ensuring that the Loading Bay and area is clear when necessary. The TSM will at times need to confidently drive vehicles up to 3.5ton box vans. 3.5 To control and maintain the stock of all stage hardware, paint, tools and materials etc. carrying out annual stock-take in liaison with the finance team and keeping all necessary records to comply with current Health and Safety legislation. 3.6 To ensure that the Workshop, Loading Bay, grid, under-stage areas and performance and backstage areas of both performance spaces are clean, clear and safe for use at all times. 3.7 To be a key holder and to have responsibility for locking the building after get-outs, fit-ups, or any work that occurs either after 11.00pm, or, when there is no performance and the FOH/reception areas are closed. 3.8 To act as a designated First Aider. 3.9 To lead on the Health and Safety Committee taking responsibility for Risk Assessments for all work backstage. To be responsible for LOLAR, COSHH, Manual Handling, WAHR & CDM requirements including leading Toolbox talks at the commencement of all fit ups. 4 Department Management and Finance To monitor and control the Technical department maintenance budgets and Production budgets where allocated, including regular reporting to the Head of Production and Planning and/or Executive Director as required. 4.1 To advise the Head of Production on all matters relating to staging, including the management and control of expenditure within agreed budgets, for all Sherman Theatre and Communities and Engagement productions, and for general technical and staging budgets; to include raising income through stage contra charges and any other opportunities identified with the Head of Production and Planning. 4.2 To inform the Head of Production and Planning of any stage contra charges and costs incurred by visiting companies and maintain records of all such costs. 4.3 To adhere to all schedules and budgets agreed with the Head of Production, including responsibility for the maintenance of accurate financial records, instigating financial controls and monitoring monthly expenditure and income reports. 4.4 To Deputise for the Head of Production and Planning on appropriate tasks when she/he is unavailable and/or on annual leave.

The post will involve evening and / or weekend work, (including attending all technical rehearsals, and contributing to their effective running) Note: You are employed as Technical Stage Manager. You may, however, be asked to perform other duties at the same grade and remuneration package and to the same total hours of work. You will be given four weeks notice of any proposed changes in duties.

7 Knowledge/Experience At least two years professional experience as a Head of Department in the Staging Department of a Producing theatre Experience of line managing permanent, freelance and casual staff Knowledge and experience of the fundamentals of equipment used in a backstage environment Experience of managing and overseeing construction processes used in a Producing theatre Professional experience of a Counterweight house including flying in show conditions, loading weights and basic safety checks A thorough knowledge of Health and Safety and the implementation and control of the applicable legislation. Including LOLAR, COSHH, Working at Height and CDM Regulations. Strong financial control/budgeting skills Demonstrable experience of running a staging department on large scale productions, including fit-ups, performances, get-outs and strikes Good working knowledge of UK Theatre/BECTU agreements Good knowledge of contemporary theatre Demonstrate understanding/experience of fulfilling the needs of a broad range of theatre makers Experience of writing and implementing Risk Assessments and Safe Systems of Work Personal Skills & Attributes Practical, with a hands-on approach Ability to negotiate Ability to work flexibly Strong prioritisation skills and ability to manage own workload and that of others A positive and enthusiastic attitude to an ambitious programme of work Budget management skills Basic carpentry skills Full UK Driving Licence and ability to drive vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes Good IT Skills Strong interpersonal skills Strong leadership and influencing skills Strong Organisational skills Ability to climb ladders and/or a tallescope The ability to anticipate the implications and consequences of situations and to take appropriate action to be prepared for possible contingencies.
