3 Occupational Advisory Committee Activities Although committee members have no legislative or administrative authority, the Advisory Committee should: Enhance the education program and become a vital, positive force for career and technical education. The time and energy given by the Advisory Committee should help increase committee members knowledge about the career and technical program and increase the teacher and administrators knowledge about the job market, employer needs, and community opportunities.

4 The OAC has several major goals: Provide recommendations to update, modify, expand, and improve the quality of the occupational program Support and strengthen the relationship between business, industry, the community and education Assist in identifying needs, determining priorities and reviewing and evaluating curriculum Articulate long-term goals and objectives of the occupational program to parents, employers and the community Make recommendations to strengthen and expand the curriculum and provide assistance in implementing these recommendations

5 To achieve these goals, members may provide valuable services in areas of: student recruitment enrollment figures placement Co-op, job shadowing and internships curriculum development approve task lists facilities safety inspections equipment new and replacement equipment staff development Act 48 hours and education NOCTI assessment scores and ask them to be proctors public relations and community needs legislative and financial support donations/awards career and technical student organizations (CTSO) support and volunteer judges

6 Meeting Facilities There are many ways to hold a meeting! (Remember two meeting per year)

7 Approval Approval of a list of committee members and a description of committee responsibilities must be approved by the JOC each year. This is why it is important to keep your member list updated with new contacts, addresses, phone numbers and ? This information is required for your 339 review and CATS 320 report

8 Committee Size Size may vary over time as committee activities expand and contract. Most Occupational Advisory Committees have 10 to 20 members. The committee should not be so large it is cumbersome nor so small to be lacking in sufficient personnel to complete tasks.

9 Composition Employees and employers in the occupation for which training is provided Representatives of business, industry and labor groups Skilled employees, including those who are self-employed Owners of small businesses Professional and technical employees Workforce Investment Board members, and/or their staff Staff members of other education agencies and institutions

10 Composition continued Coordinator of Workforce Development Youth Organizations and other business education partnerships Non-traditional members Representatives of racial and ethnic populations from the community Parents, students (non-voting), graduates and the general public

11 Terms of Membership The suggested term of membership is three years. (Again, it is important to consider local conditions, availability of volunteers, and the need to have all significant elements of the community represented)

12 ORGANIZING THE OCCUPATIONAL ADVISORY COMMITTEE *Elect Officers at lease a chairperson and recording secretary (Teachers and other school staff should not serve as a committee chairperson, but can serve as recording secretary) Meetings should follow basic Roberts Rules of Order to make motions, second motions, table motions, and voting

13 Organizing the Occupational Advisory Committee The success of an advisory committee depends largely upon the ability of the school representative (teacher) to guide, encourage and assist the committee in its activities however, he/she must not dominate the committee or its meetings. Also, introduce your co-op coordinator to group so they can put a face with a name.

14 Pre-meeting Plan meeting date, time, meal, program topics and location a year in advance Prepare agendas, prepare data to support agenda actions Mail invitations, agendas, supportive materials, meal menu, and postcard RSVP Compile lists of members returning post cards and call non-responding members to confirm reservations.

15 Conducting Effective Occupational Advisory Committee Meetings Start and stop meetings as scheduled (1 1 ½ hours) Extend only on agreement of committee Assure all who attend have an opportunity to be active participants Present problems for discussion and actions with appropriate resource materials, prices, etc. Make decisions by consensus whenever possible Record minutes and promptly mail them to members along with a thank you note and request for letter of support
