You may have decided to expore the apprenticeship programmes because you are keen to provide a young person with a rea opportunity, after a nurturing fresh taent can be exciting and rewarding whist providing you with the means to meet future succession pans. This is where we can hep. Apprentice Roes What exacty does an Apprenticeship programme ook ike? Apprentices can fufi a number of roes within a businesses, from Administrators to Catering to Motor Vehice. Depending on the type of roe you require, an Apprenticeship can be taiored to suit the requirements of the job roe. 4 The Assessor The Assessor is responsibe for deivering the quaification and carrying out the assessment. An Assessor wi be assigned to your Apprentice and wi visit them in the workpace to provide training and assess their competence against a set of agreed standards. The first few weeks of the quaification can often be the most chaenging for an Apprentice as they sette into their studies and the work environment. As an empoyer you can hep by reviewing the Individua Learning Pan with your Apprentice and their Assessor. This process wi hep identify which units of the quaification are covered by the Apprentice s current job roe, therefore ensuring that the quaification is taiored towards meeting your needs. Recruitment The Nationa Apprenticeship Service offers an on-ine service which can be used to advertise and recruit an Apprentice roe for you. In order to use this service a training provider, such as City Coege Peterborough, wi be required. City Coege Peterborough offers a free recruitment service for your Apprentice roe. We wi advertise the positions and screen a appicants prior to sending their detais over to your company for consideration. City Coege Peterborough wi assess the appicant s Functiona Engish and Functiona Maths as we as their IT abiities before suggesting them for the position. As the empoyer you wi be abe to shortist candidates and hod interviews in order to seect the candidate that is right for you. To hep with recruitment you may wish to consider the option of offering a Traineeship. These programmes provide young earners with work experience and work preparation training and act as a stepping stone into an Apprenticeship. Funding and Centraised Grants There is Government funding avaiabe to contribute towards the costs of recruiting and training an Apprentice. Whist the Government wi fuy fund the apprenticeship programmes for earners aged between years od, they ony provide 50% of the costs for earners aged 19 and over. For earners aged 24 and oder the amount of funding is ower and not aways avaiabe. You can appy for funding through City Coege Peterborough. They wi be abe to advise you on the funding avaiabe and how it is paid. For Apprentices 19 and over, there may be a contribution required, but this woud be discussed with the Coege s Recruitment Adviser. 5 Apprenticeship Framework A Apprenticeship frameworks are inked to specific job roes or occupations. Generay, the minimum amount of time for an Apprenticeship takes to compete is 12 months. 5

6 On-the-job Learning As an empoyer it is important that you provide your Apprentice with an induction into their roe and continua on-the-job earning. Through on-the-job earning an Apprentice wi deveop job-specific skis that wi enabe them to fufi the roe and meet the requirements of their quaification. During the course of the Apprenticeship you can support your Apprentice by the foowing: Hep to pan By identifying activities that can be used to generate evidence and setting targets for achievement and assessment. Observe and anayse Monitor your Apprentice and check their work reguary. Record any areas for improvement and give opportunities for practice. Give feedback Discuss performance with your Apprentice ensuring they input to the process. Be positive about things they have done we and be open and honest about any areas for improvement. Expain or demonstrate Discuss ways of improving techniques and, if possibe, use exampes of simiar work or demonstrate better techniques. Provide opportunities Ensure your Apprentice has the opportunity to practice and deveop their skis and aim to aocate activities which wi encourage them. If possibe, change their routines reguary to add a variety of tasks and provide further opportunities to earn. Apprentices wi be required to gather evidence during their apprenticeship which supports and evidences their competency. City Coege Peterborough wi provide assessment materias, a portfoio and access to the Coege s Virtua Learning Environment (VLE). Evidence can be coected in many forms and is acceptabe, as ong as it heps to prove competence. This may incude a written witness testimony, recording of a professiona discussion, notes or an observation etc. Off-the-job Learning As part of their programme your Apprentice wi be required to study a professiona quaification. This wi incude sef-study, competion of onine earning and assessments, and one-to-one sessions with an Assessor either in person or remotey. In order to support your Apprentice with their studies it is good practice to aow your Apprentice schedued time within the working week to concentrate on their professiona quaification, usuay an hour per week is recommended. 6

7 The Apprentice Wage Empoyers are responsibe for paying an Apprentice s wages and issuing their Contract of Empoyment. Apprentices must be paid at east the Apprenticeship Nationa Minimum Wage. Apprentices who are aged 19 and over but within the first year of their Apprenticeship wi be paid the Apprenticeship Nationa Minimum Wage. Individuas not faing into these categories shoud be paid the Standard Nationa Minimum Wage rate for their age band. Hours and Hoiday Entitement Both the empoyer and City Coege Peterborough have a duty to ensure that the environment within your work pace is safe, secure and that the company compies with basic Heath and Safety aw. Therefore, prior to an Apprentice starting within your workpace, the Assessor wi require a copy of the Company s Empoyers Liabiity Insurance certificate and wi carry out a Heath and Safety Assessment. This incudes ensuring that we have robust Safeguarding and Chid Protection Poicies in pace and they are shared with empoyers. The Recruitment Officer wi discuss this poicy with you and provide you with a copy of our poicy, incuding what you shoud do if you have any concerns with the we being of your Apprentice. Pastora Support For those Apprentices that require additiona pastora support, whether from the start of the programme or identified at a ater stage, then this can be arranged with the Assessor and a Support Worker wi work on a one-to-one basis to ensure the Apprentice s needs are met. 7
