3 When employee training is one requirement for complying with OSHA regulations and keeping employees safe, courses on those subjects take on a special importance. OSHA reports that in 2015, the latest year with data available, 4,836 workers were killed on the job - over 13 fatalities every day. Although every one of these courses is highly relevant to all affected companies, a few hold special interest, whether due to a recent update or simple applicability across a wide swath of industries. WITH TRAINING READILY AVAILABLE FOR THESE SUBJECTS, THERE S NO EXCUSE FOR NONCOMPLIANCE IN TODAY S WORKPLACES Employers who neglect to get their teams the training they need, as required by law, are creating unnecessary risk for workers, along with the possibility of legal actions. At eleap, we offer hundreds of courses geared toward meeting OSHA regulations. The following are a few of our most popular and in-demand selections, presented as examples of why training matters in these situations, as well as proof that compliance isn t just important for its own sake - it s closely tied to the practical, everyday safety of the whole workforce. These are the top three categories of courses demanded by our customers between January and May Copyright Telania, LLC. All rights reserved. Unauthorized

4 PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE) Employers need to be aware of the various potential hazards present in their workplaces and draw up comprehensive lists of the PPE needed to keep workers safe from electricity, machinery, chemicals, potentially harmful dust, biological substances such as blood and much more. Selecting the gear to be used by employees is a varied process, with exact specifications differing based on the type of gear and type of hazard. There are separate standards for eye and face protection, head protection and foot protection. Once employers figure out which PPE is relevant for their particular workers, they need to turn their attention to training. At the least, PPE training must tell workers when the equipment is necessary, what gear they need, how to wear those items effectively, the limitations of protection and the proper care and maintenance or disposal of PPE. If employees who have been trained show behavior indicating they don t understand the concepts imparted, they must go back for more education. Furthermore, changes in the workplace or equipment should be accompanied by new training that fits the revised circumstances. Safety First! Training should always be documented. OSHA requires leaders to keep records of each worker who receives courses, when the sessions occurred and which types of gear that individual was trained in the usage of. Courses available regarding PPE cover this vital subject from every angle, naming the responsibilities of employers and their employees alike. The practical value of PPE is clear: This gear can save lives. With the right training, workers will be ideally prepared to use the equipment relevant to them. Copyright Telania, LLC. 5 BLOODBORNE PATHOGENS Preparation for safely handling blood and other potentially infectious biological substances is vital because of the highrisk nature of these situations. Bad practices could lead to infection with serious diseases such as HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C. As with PPE rules, there are OSHA guidelines on the proper handling of blood, and they also include adequate training. IN FACT, THERE IS AN INTERSECTION BETWEEN PATHOGEN PROTECTION AND PPE USE, AS ACCESS TO SUFFICIENT EQUIPMENT IS ONE OF THE THINGS EMPLOYERS MUST GIVE WORKERS WHO CAN REASONABLY BE EXPECTED TO ENCOUNTER BIOLOGICAL SUBSTANCES. Precautions must be applied universally, meaning that regulations should treat all human blood as though it is infectious. Employers are also responsible for supplementary elements, such as hepatitis B vaccinations, as well as post-exposure evaluations for anyone who comes into contact with bodily fluids on the job. Bloodborne pathogen protection plans are not a set-and-forget situation. Leaders must have established strategies that receive annual updates to see if any more effective medical solutions have become available in the interim. Employers are also required to take suggestions from frontline workers. Training in dealing with bloodborne pathogens must also be a frequent occurrence, covering a variety of topics such as information on the diseases that may lurk in blood, as well as the availability of the vaccines and medical follow-ups. When people join a company or change roles into one more likely to deal with blood or other substances, training is required. Then, training must be held at least annually for all these employees. The training requirements are obviously even more stringent for medical researchers who work specifically with bloodborne diseases. Copyright Telania, LLC. All rights reserved. Unauthorized

6 LOCKOUT/TAGOUT WITH AN ESTIMATED 50,000 INJURIES AND 120 FATALITIES EVERY YEAR, THE NEED FOR ADEQUATE PROTECTION AND TRAINING IS CLEAR. There are three separate elements that must be included in training for affected workers. These employees need to know: The details of the company s energy control plan How that plan relates to their current responsibilities Exactly what the OSHA standards entail regarding lockout and tagout procedures. Electrical and other energy hazards from machinery and heavy equipment are some of the most critical threats employees face in equipment-intensive workplaces. This is why OSHA maintains a detailed standard on shutting these assets down during maintenance and service. OSHA specified that there are 3 million employees in the highest-risk group: Craft workers, laborers and machine operators are all part of this segment of the workforce. It s up to employers to ensure their energy policies are up to date, checking them at least annually. Recently, this process has become especially relevant. In December 2016, OSHA opened a comment period on potential lockout/tagout changes that would change the phrasing of the standard, with serious potential effects on companies. Copyright Telania, LLC. 7 THE RIGHT TRAINING FOR THE SITUATION Every industry is unique, and each company within those fields has its own OSHA requirements to comply with. Coming to grips with these rules may mean training for leaders and team members alike. The former courses will help organizations get on the right track, while the latter are often woven into compliance requirements. The regulations discussed above, and the many more like them, are all on the books to encourage safe and healthy workers While these rules can get complex, they are guided by a simple and valuable principle: EMPLOYEES SHOULD ALWAYS FEEL THEY ARE SAFE WHILE ON THE JOB, NO MATTER WHAT THEIR WORK MIGHT ENTAIL. When companies commit to improving their safety training, they re not just checking off an item on a checklist. Real lives are at stake, and great preparedness can be the difference-maker that gets every worker home safe and sound at the end of the day. Copyright Telania, LLC. All rights reserved.
