1 VACANCY NOTICE Title: Communication Assistant Location: Bujumbura, Burundi Duration: Six months Grade: G5 Vacancy No: VN 2016 BI-10_01 Contract Type: Special Short Term Contract Start Date: Immediately Closing Date: 09 March 2016 Background: The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is committed to the principle that humane and orderly migration benefits migrants and society. As the leading international organization for migration, IOM acts with its partners in the international community to: assist in meeting the growing operational challenges of migration management; advance understanding of migration issues; encourage social and economic development through migration, and; uphold the human dignity and well-being of migrants. Under the direct supervision of the Chief of Mission, in collaboration with the Director of Communications in Geneva, the communications assistant will be responsible for contributing to the implementation of communications strategies to promote IOM, engage communities, and raise awareness of migration issues both nationally and internationally. Duties and Responsibilities: The incumbent candidate will have the following responsibilities pertaining to Public Information and Communicating with Communities in Burundi: Public Information and Visibility 1. Assist with the gathering, preparing and disseminating of public information on IOM activities in the country, both in writing and verbally. 2. Draft and edit public information material for IOM s bi-weekly press briefing notes, website and social media in clear and concise English and French. Page 1 of 6

Assist with the content in the form of human interest stories from the field, photographs and video clips for an international audience, including migration stories for IOM s I am a migrant global campaign. 4. Provide support for a timely and efficient publication and distribution of media content for the mission s social media channels as well as the global website iom.int and other IOM media, websites, blogs etc. 5. Provide specialized assistance to IOM Chief of Mission with on-going media requests and coordinate interview opportunities for the COM. 6. Assist in the organization of appropriate gender awareness campaigns in all IOM communications in relation to the project. 7. Coordinate IOM s media outreach with donors, international partners and other international and news agencies. Communicating with Communities 1. Provide support and assistance in coordinating communications with communities (CwC) activities, particularly the recently launched interagency call center. 2. Liaise closely with other IOM staff and partner agencies to ensure alignment of CwC field activities with other program activities and goals. 3. Advocate for increased communications with crisis-affected populations and provide inputs on integration of CwC into the work of IOM. 4. Support the integration of IOM s online platform Community Response Map into the work of the interagency call center by ensuring effective tracking of incoming calls, capturing relevant data and regularly assessing the needs of the target populations. 5. Provide assistance on the production of various print and radio media resources based on key messages and concerns such as social cohesion, protection, health among others in different regions 6. Coordinate with UN OCHA and other agencies and humanitarian organizations to facilitate ongoing interagency collaboration. 7. Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the Chief of Mission or Director of Communications.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE 1. Degree in journalism or related field with minimum of 5years relevant working experience in the field of an international environment is an asset; 2. High competency as a writer, editor in French and English, be able to work without direct supervision and be results oriented. 3. Understanding and experience living and working in challenging environments. 4. Direct experience in publishing to the web, newsletters and other media. VI. LANGUAGES French, English Fluent Advantageous Fluency in written and spoken Kirundi is an advantage
