1 big wins for nunavut How the government of Nunavut saved $75k on training costs and $400k in operational costs.

2 health & safety ROI Health & Safety is the unsung hero of successful workplaces. It rarely gets the attention it deserves. An unsafe workplace leaves room for potential lawsuits, increases turnover and gets costly due to production loss. When an organization views health & safety as a worthwhile initiative -- good things happen: a safe environment is created while giving workers the info they need to do their job effectively. This adds tangible results to the bottom line. Health & Safety then becomes more than an injury prevention program, it exists to prevent production stoppage in order to keep the cash flow going for workers and employers. It s the classic win-win. Read on to see how we helped the Government of Nunavut expand training, track progress in real-time and save $70,000 over 3 years on up-front training costs and over $400,000 per year in operational costs. 2 Client: Government of Nunavut Trainees: 1000 Institution type: Government CHALLENGES Remote location and logistics made training expensive. Therefore, focus was placed on WHMIS and TDG Training on WHMIS and TDG alone left huge gaps in compliance and open to liabilities Needed to reduce spend and train more Required a better way to track training progress SOLUTION An online training platform with courses that meet provincial and federal standards A training platform that would be more cost effective with easy progress tracking Ability to build custom courses with the flexibility to create training in multiple languages challenges Logistics and costs are top concerns for any organization, but even more so for Nunavut and its vast geography. Traditional in-class training resulted in high costs of delivery, limited training options and long training times. Even the organization of it all was a big project itself. RESULTS Savings of over $435,000 per year (on upfront training and operational costs) Decreased training time by 50% Simplified training duties and tracking with OLE s training platform (progress reports, policy templates, custom course builder, full library of courses) Imo Adla, Manager of Workplace Health, Safety & Wellness for the Government of Nunavut noticed a few main advantages switching to online training would bring:

3 3 + The ability for employees to complete training around their schedule + Reduce costs and production loss by removing the need for travel while being able to complete training faster (typically, online takes 1/3 the time vs. in-class) + Employees could learn at their own pace (replaying slides and retaking quizzes as needed) + Electronic tracking would make it easier to review training progress and hold employees accountable training program, but the budget was eaten up with these two courses alone. This meant major gaps in safety and due diligence, which left Nunavut open to a wide array of liabilities. solution After getting to know Imo and his training process, we saw a huge opportunity to make Imo s life easier while providing his people with more training. Before working with OLE, Imo was spending $35,000 per year to train 1000 employees on only two courses (WHMIS and TDG). This training was done in-class, which required flying a trainer out from Edmonton (plus food and accommodations) for 3 days. Much preparation was required to organize which employees were to be trained on which day. Lunch was another costly expense and many forget to calculate employee salaries for days on training. This recouped cost meant huge savings for Nunavut. Calculating production loss/operational costs: Production loss cost per employee (based on average 50K salary) = $ per day. 137x1000 (employees)= $137,000 per day 137,000 x 3 days = $411,000 TOTAL: For 3 days of downtime to train 1000 employees based on an average salary of $50k costs $411,000 per year in production loss. Keep in mind this was only for WHMIS and TDG training! Imo wanted to create a more robust With an OLE membership, Imo had access to our online training platform while providing all staff with more training options. He could now take control and create any training his employees required. Our Course Builder gives Imo the ability to create any training he needs. A PowerPoint is imported into the Course Builder and with a click of a button, the magic happens. Imo can then add as many quizzes as he likes. There have been discussions about converting courses into the various Nunavut dialects. Now Imo has the tool to make that possible. Instead of manually tracking with paper or Excel, our platform allows Imo to see in realtime, the status of any course, certificate or training schedule. Organizational reporting is included, allowing reporting to be broken down by branches, divisions or roles. Imo can quickly see the status of his training and keep his people accountable.

4 4 Our course library has over 90 courses. It s a mix of health & safety and general workplace training. This allows Imo to train on way more than simply TDG and WHMIS. See page 5 for a course list. Snippets is our document management system. It helps Imo ensure his policies are up-to date (with access to 100+ templates) and housed where everyone can easily acccess them no matter where they are. results With an OLE membership, Imo was able to realize: Savings of $70k over 3 years in upfront training costs Savings of over $400k per year in recouped operational costs (reducing production loss) Increased training opportunities -- instead of just 2 courses courses and ability to create custom training Improved compliance: Updated policies, forms, checklists and an overall safety message that says Nunavut cares about its workers. Imo also has his own account manager, Kent Layton. Kent helps with health & safety to general training questions. He works with Imo every step of the way. 5 About ole Online Learning Enterprises (OLE) is located in London, Ontario and perhaps you've heard of our sister company, Occupational Safety Group (OSG). Back in 2009 they had been receiving strong demand for online courses by several big brands. It was quickly realized that online training would be a viable way for companies to build great training programs. OLE was born. We began offering individual/unit based online training courses. The Internet was the perfect vehicle to allow companies to quickly get compliant and trained. In 2013 (and continually) we put in a lot of time into our online training platform and course creation to maximize ease of use and retention for our clients. Today we've evolved into more than just health & safety training. Our training platform is web-based and includes all the training tools you ll need to build your own training program (from a custom course builder to over 100 policy templates to full organizational reporting). Ongoing employee development reduces skill gaps, liabilities and ultimately improves your business. The possibilities are endless, think: sales training for increased revenue, procedural/best practices training to be more efficient or create a solid new hire training to get an employee up and running ASAP.
