1 COURSE SYLLABUS OUTLINE Department: Educational Studies, Leadership and Counseling Course Number: GUI 620 Credit Hours: 3 semester hours I. Title: Practicum in Guidance and Counseling II. Catalog Description: Closely supervised practice in guidance and counseling under staff supervision in selected educational and agency settings. Arrangements for the practicum must be made a semester in advance. Also, the student must be admitted to the program. III. Purpose: To provide student with 150 clock hours of experience in a community agency or school of which 40 clock hours must be in providing direct service. IV. Course Objectives: (KY School Counselor Standards 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7) The purpose of GUI 620 is to help you to further develop skills that you will need to function as a practicing counselor. The objectives are for you to be able to demonstrate your ability to: (1) work with a variety of clients and problems; (2) be able to use a variety of counseling techniques; (3) work with groups as well as individuals; (4) work with other personnel in a collaborative or consulting manner; (5) to know referral sources in the community; (6) to utilize ethical principles and practices of ACA 1995 Code of Ethics. While these are the specific objectives of this course, the overall emphasis will be placed on your ability to function interpersonally and help bring about change in those individuals with whom you will be working. In addition, you will become aware of the role of the counselor by supporting KERA goals. V. Content Outline: Abilities you should demonstrate you will develop a plan to accomplish this. Practicum Meetings (1-B) Practicum students will be directly (individual) supervised no less than 1 hour per week and 1 1/2 hours per week on a group basis. 1. Group meetings 2. Visitations with field supervisor. 3. Individual meetings on-site and on-campus. * Accountability logs will be turned in at the end of the semester verifying supervision. B. Activity Log I. Client log: An entry for every client seen (loose-leaf notebook suggested) (3-4 A+B)

Periodic meetings/visitations (Be prepared to discuss activities, problems, progress, etc.-bring daily activity log). 2. Client log to be turned in by end of course. 3. A written report of all the referral services available to you including school, community, private, and governmental sources. 4. Tapes and evaluations of counseling sessions (As suggested by you, on site supervisor or instructor) 5. One case study 6. A summarization of your activities during the course, showing how you have accomplished course objectives and outlining personal and professional strengths and weaknesses which you have observed in yourself. B. Evaluation and grading 1. Grade of "B" a. Satisfactory accomplishment of 1-6 above b. Additional requirements as determined by you, instructor, and supervisor. c. Recommendation of supervisor and instructor 2. Grade of "A" a. Meet criteria for "B" grade b. Two additional projects satisfactorily completed 1. A typewritten narrative showing progress in an area of weakness you have decided to work on, an interest area you wanted to pursue, a theory you wanted to pursue, etc. 2. Other project as agreed upon between each individual and the

5 instructor regarding an activity of a professional nature. X. Attendance Policy: This course adheres to the policy published in the MSU Graduate Bulletin. XI. Academic Honesty Policy: Cheating, plagiarism (submitting another person s material as one s own), or doing work for another person which will receive academic credit are all impermissible. This includes the use of unauthorized books, notebooks or other sources in order to secure or give help during an examination, the unauthorized copying of examinations, assignments, reports, or term papers or the presentation or unacknowledged material as if it were the student s own work. Disciplinary action may be taken beyond the academic discipline administered by the faculty member who teaches the course in which the cheating took place. XII. Text and References: No text adopted. Emphasis is placed on reading articles in current professional journals in order to know the present issues and concerns. Extensive use of the library is required to complete mutually agreed-upon projects and activities. XIII. Prerequisites: Open only to those students completing a master's degree program in guidance and counseling at Murray State University. Arrangements for the practicum must be made a semester in advance by completing and submitting the Intent to Register for Practicum Form.
