1 UPPINGHAM SCHOOL JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title Senior Plumbing & Heating Engineer Reports to M&E Lead Engineer Job context Uppingham School, founded in 1584, is a leading co-educational independent boarding school. Its 800 pupils, aged 13-18, are accommodated in 15 boarding houses, taught by over 20 academic departments, and participate in numerous extra-curricular activities such as sports, music, and drama. The academic programme is supported by business units responsible for marketing, estates, finance, human resources, IT, catering, cleaning, health and safety, and the School s trading subsidiary. The School employs over 700 staff. The built estate has 80 buildings with an insurance replacement value of 178 million, whose combined external footprint is 775,000 sq. ft. and of which 23 are listed (Grades I II). Buildings include teaching blocks, assembly buildings, boarding houses, staff housing, administrative and technical accommodation, and sports facilities. An RIBA national-award winning Science Centre was completed in The School is seeking an outstanding Engineer to join its busy, close-knit Maintenance Team. Job purpose To lead, develop and mentor a team of electrical and mechanical engineers to deliver high standards of performance, excellent customer service and a proactive approach to all elements of work. To be a highly-skilled, knowledgeable and integral member of the Maintenance Team, allocating planned and reactive maintenance tasks to your team and ensuring they are actioned correctly, within budget, within the assigned SLA and to the customer s satisfaction. Your accountabilities 1. Coordination of engineering and technical staff 2. Provision of high standards of customer service 3. Provision of sound technical support to the Maintenance Team 4. Undertaking scheduled maintenance 5. Responding to breakdowns including call-out duties 6. Obtaining specialist components, fixtures or fittings and managing stocks of supplies and equipment 7. Compliance with health and safety legislation 8. Statistical and financial records 9. Maintenance procedures 10. Stocks of supplies and equipment 11. Environmental Management

2 Outcomes 1. Coordination of engineering and technical staff a. Regular catch up meetings have been held with Heating & Ventilation team b. Team holidays have been coordinated to ensure a suitable level of support at all times c. Labour resources have been disbursed effectively and efficiently to complete tasks on time d. All KPIs and SLAs have been met and there is evidence to support this: any failed KPIs or SLAs have been reported to your line manager 2. Provision of high standards of customer service a. Regular customer feedback regarding work requests made has been provided and customers have not needed to escalate any issues b. Contributions towards the regular team newsletter and ad hoc updates have been made on a regular basis c. Updates have been provided on emergencies/ service outages as required 3. Provision of sound technical support to the Maintenance Team: a. A clear point of technical support has been provided for the Estates Engineering Team and they feel their technical needs are met b. You have clearly explained and defined the technical requirements of a task with technical justification to support this 4. Undertaking scheduled maintenance: a. Building service assets have been maintained in line with the CAFM (Computer Aided Facilities Management) system b. SFG20 (planned maintenance system) has been used as a basis for all PPM (Planned Preventative Maintenance) activities c. All planned maintenance activities and schedules have been planned and agreed with your line manager d. All planned maintenance tasks are completed within the CAFM system and all PPM remedial works have been logged as reactive tasks 5. Responding to breakdowns: a. All relevant reactive tasks in the CAFM system have been actioned effectively to ensure timely completion b. The School feels fully supported through the agreed call out rota for building services c. The wider team has been fully supported with identification and diagnosis of faults d. All faults have been repaired in a manner that is suitable, safe and appropriate and in line with agreed SLAs 6. Obtaining specialist components, fixtures or fittings: a. When required you have worked with your line manager to source specialist parts, tools, equipment and/ or material in line with team procedures b. All requirements for a specialist contractor have been agreed and approved via your line manager 7. Statistical and financial records: a. You have provided monthly reporting data to the Building Services & Maintenance Coordinator where required 8. Compliance with health and safety legislation: a. Your line manager feels fully supported and assured that all work (whether carried out inhouse or through a contractor) is in full compliance with all relevant legislation and completed in a controlled, professional manner. You have ensured that all accidents and incidents have been report through the School s reporting processes b. Any unsafe behaviours or conditions have been challenged and reported to your line manager as soon as practicably possible

3 c. Planned maintenance tasks have been monitored against statutory and mandatory compliance guidance to ensure full compliance d. As the deputy responsible person for water hygiene across the estate, you have carried out the necessary checks and are certain that the necessary health and hygiene standards are being met. e. You have positively contributed towards and followed all specific SSOW (Safe Systems of Work) for work with hazardous systems or services 9. Maintenance procedures: a. You have contributed towards and followed individual maintenance task procedures to ensure tasks have been safely completed b. You have consulted SFG20 as the basis for all maintenance tasks 10. Stocks of supplies and equipment: a. You have ensured that a full list of critical spares used has been recorded via the CAFM system or line manager; you have recorded all critical spares used in a timely manner; and stock is effectively controlled via the CAFM system b. You have positively worked with the Building Services & Maintenance Coordinator to source the best value materials 11. Environmental Management: a. You have positively supported the Building Services Lead Engineer with the operational control of the BEMS (Building Energy Management System) b. Areas for improved energy efficiency have been identified and proposals have been provided for changes c. The TREND BEMS system has been monitored and any areas of concern have been highlighted to your line manager d. All building service waste streams are managed in full compliance with WEEE and Hazardous Waste regulations and records are retained e. You have proactively responded to alarms from the BEMS system and have reported any findings to your line manager in a timely manner Qualifications, skills and experience, personal qualities required Required qualifications: Appropriate professional qualifications in mechanical discipline Mechanical / HVAC bias Gas Safe Approved for commercial and domestic gas systems Member of professional trade body, e.g. CIBSE, IET, etc. TREND Operator experience IOSH Managing Safely or equivalent

4 Essential skills and experience: Sound capabilities with Microsoft Office Good standards of spoken and written English BEMS (Building Energy Management System) experience Experience of implementation of new BEMS Systems Ability to diagnose faults and report findings accurately Practical knowledge and experience of working with heating & ventilation systems, water hygiene, plumbing, gas appliances Experience of: o Working with both commercial and domestic gas systems o L8 ACoP, Legionella Control o Gas appliance servicing o Suggesting and introducing energy efficiency and sustainability measures and methods o Working on a large and varied estate o Working in a School or further education environment. o Working as a multi-trade team on refurbishment projects o Working on a wide range of domestic and commercial plumbing and heating installations in a variety of old and new building types, including old boiler plant and heating systems Knowledge and experience of energy saving systems and devices Knowledge of modern wet heating solutions Experience of Air Conditioning/ Air Handling and ducted systems and installations Essential personal qualities: Personable, approachable, supportive and able to work productively within a team Ability to remain calm and collected in a busy and sometimes demanding environment, including during emergency management Analytical, reasoned and logical approach to problem-solving and prioritising workload High personal and professional standards A self-motivated, solution-based team player, able to work with minimum supervision Resilient, energetic, sociable and good-humoured Possesses an eye for detail and quality and a sympathetic approach to historic buildings Physically able to carry out manual duties. 5 Gardens Manager Terms and conditions Working hours All year round, Monday to Thursday, 08:30-17:00, Friday 08:30 16:00 with a one-hour unpaid lunch break. The School reserves the right to vary these normal hours of work between Monday and Sunday (whether temporarily or permanently). This may be necessary to meet the particular needs of the School. All employees are required to work reasonable overtime, particularly during busy periods. Overtime will be paid or may be taken off in lieu as agreed by the line manager. Salary Dependent upon experience Probationary period 6 calendar months Benefits Holidays The annual holiday entitlement is 25 days holiday per annum plus Bank/Public Holidays. Bank/Public Holidays that fall in term time are normal working days. It should be noted that up to five days holiday (less Bank/Public Holidays) may be required to be taken, subject to line manager approval, over the Christmas/New Year period, when the School is mainly closed. 6 Organisational Structure Safeguarding The post-holder s responsibility for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young persons for whom they are responsible, or with whom they come into contact, will be to adhere to and ensure compliance with the School s Safeguarding (Child Protection) Policy at all times. If in the course of carrying out the duties of the post the post-holder becomes aware of any actual or potential risks to the safety or welfare of children in the School they must report any concerns to the School s Designated Safeguarding Lead or to the Headmaster.
