3 Parks and Protected Areas Nova Scotia parks and protected areas system includes: Provincial parks (Dept of Natural Resources) protected areas (Dept of Environment) wilderness areas nature reserves Municipal parks National parks and historic sites (Parks Canada) Land trusts (Nova Scotia Nature Trust, Nature Conservancy of Canada, etc) Other Game sanctuaries Migratory bird sanctuaries National wildlife areas etc Joint initiative (DNR & NSE): 205 provincial parks 84 wilderness areas 138 nature reserves Comprehensive review of NS Parks. Resulted in: 4 new parks (960 ha) 12 park expansions (9,980 ha) 2,150 ha transferred to NSE 1,000 ha transferred to Crown

4 Nova Scotia Parks - Range of experiences - Day use, camping, hiking, beaches, rest areas etc - Visitor services, park events

5 Park Management Planning Management Direction sets the vision and provides guidance. Core Park vs. Supporting Park An Operational Plan will be completed before the Management Direction is finalized. Management Plan vs. Management Statement vs. Operational Plan These are two types of Management Direction: A management plan is approved by the Minister of Natural Resources and provides a policy and resource management framework that addresses substantial and complex issues, substantial capital infrastructure and/or resource management projects for one or more provincial parks properties. A management statement is approved by the Minister of Natural Resources and provides a policy and resource management framework that addresses a limited number of non-complex issues, limited capital infrastructure and/or resource management projects for one or more provincial parks properties.
