58 [Assignment 1: INTRODUCTION] Welcome to the project everyone! You have been invited to participate in this second phase of Clemson University s South Carolina Green Jobs Survey so we can get in-person feedback from you about green, or environmentallyfriendly jobs and business practices in South Carolina. Thank you for agreeing to participate. Before we get started, I want to give you some ground rules to consider as you work through this project. Detailed Answers are critical - We learn the most when you provide us with really detailed answers. Imagine me in the background always wanting to ask you "why do you say that?" or "what do you mean by that?" The purpose of these studies is to help us understand more about your thoughts, experiences and how things work for you. Vague answers don't help with that. It is the details that help us figure out what to do. If you can, talk more - the answers can be absolutely as long as you need them to be to get your point across. You'll probably talk more about green jobs hiring, training needs, and challenges you face than you ever have at one time And, that s ok. In fact, that's exactly what we want. We want you to be as creative, thorough and honest with your answers as possible. All of the questions we ask have a purpose. Watch both the video questions (from me) and then read the text carefully - They often complement each other in subtle ways. Make sure to use the video camera and any materials, belongings or stimuli you think would help you answer the questions. It's why we are doing the study in this format. We want to see and experience things, as well as hear you. Remember that we want to SEE you and HEAR you clearly. Make sure you speak loudly and clearly when you re recording your responses and confirm your head and shoulders are nicely framed within the window. Also, ensure the lighting in the room is adequate and there isn t a source of light directly behind you, this will cause an unpleasant silhouette. Relax and be yourself on the camera. Don't worry about doing it perfectly. You will notice in my questions that I sometimes stumble over my words - you may too and that is totally fine and very natural. Please be assured that there are no right or wrong answers. We are interested in your honest and open opinions.

59 Now, that we are done with the ground rules let s get started. For this first assignment I d like to learn a little bit more about you. What is your name? Tell me about your company or organization. Where is it located? How long has it been in business? What are its products and services? About how many employees do you have? Tell me about the jobs you have in your organization which are directly involved in making green products or providing green-related services. Lastly, please talk about the role that green or environmentally sustainable practices have in your business model. When you are finished responding, upload your video and come back for the second assignment. [Assignment 2: SKILL REQUIREMENTS] For this next assignment, I d like to discuss the skills your green workforce needs that are different from your other employees. How do the skill sets and talents of green employees differ from your other employees? Please be specific. Do they differ by job? How so? Have these desired (or even must-have ) green job skills and talents changed over time? Why and how? Talk to me about how industry or company changes have influenced the specific skills you are looking for. How have these changes translated into specific skill needs? When you are finished responding, upload your video and come back for the next assignment. [Assignment 3: HIRING/TRAINING] For this next assignment, I d like you to explain how you ve seen your company s or industry s hiring and training needs change over time. Has your firm hired more employees for green or environmentally-friendly jobs over the past 5 years? If yes, why is that? Is it because the industry is changing, because your company is changing, or both? Please explain. If no, why not?

60 When trying to fill these kinds of jobs, have you been filling these openings internally, or have you been hiring from the outside? Please explain. Where do you turn to find green-related training for existing employees? Where and how does training for these workers take place? Is this different from how you normally train other employees in other jobs? Where do you turn to find trained workers to hire from the outside? Is this different from how you normally look for trained workers? When you are finished responding, upload your video and come back for the next assignment. [Assignment 4: HIRING/TRAINING] Continuing to discuss how you train existing employees, or find external hires, when you have personnel needs that require green-related skills and talents Please comment on your company s experience with in-house training, industry associations, and/or career and technical schools or technical colleges? Please explain. Does it matter to your industry or organization if workers in green-related areas have particular certifications? If so, what are they? Are these certifications different from, or the same as, certifications held by other employees in non-green areas? In the future, what is your company s plan? Do you plan on training current employees or will you to bring in employees from the outside with the green skill sets you require? Why do you say this? When you are finished responding, upload your video and come back for the next assignment. [Assignment 5: TRAINING SUCESSES/FAILURES] For this next assignment, I d like you to elaborate on some specific instances where training has really worked. I m also going to ask you about situations that didn t work out as well. Please take a few moments and describe for me a few training successes you ve had, especially with employees in green jobs. What made these instances a success? Was it the training? The type of job? The employee? Please explain. Now take a few moments to describe a training situation or two that didn t work out. What happened? When you are finished responding, upload your video and come back for the next assignment.

61 [Assignment 6: BARRIERS AND INCENTIVES] Next, I d like you to discuss what you believe are some of the barriers to growing the number of green, or environmentally-friendly jobs and business practices in your area/sc. I d also like to know how important business incentives are to your company. What is your current perception of the availability of potential employees that have the green training your company needs? Please explain. Are there any laws or regulations you feel are limiting the number of trained employees available for hire in your area? What are they? Are there any laws or regulations making more trained employees available? Are there any laws or regulations that you feel would restrict green or environmentallysustainable business opportunities in your area? If so, what are they? I d like to know of any laws or regulations you see as promoting green business activity. Are you aware of any? What are your thoughts as they relate to tax incentives for green businesses or purchasers of green products? When you are finished responding, upload your video and come back for the next assignment. [Assignment 7: FUTURE OF GREEN JOBS] For this final assignment, I d like you to think about the future of green or environmentally- sustainable jobs and business practices at your organization. Are there changes going on at your company that would increase your need for workers who make environmentally-friendly products, provide green services, and/or implement green business practices in the future? If so, what are the changes that will cause increased demand for these workers? Do you foresee any changes in business practices that would impact your company s need for employees in green-related areas? Why or why not? How does your organization s orientation toward environmental sustainability or going green impact your suppliers and customers, if at all? Are you aware of any changes to your firm s procurement or subcontracting policies resulting from production of green products or adoption of environmentally-sustainable business practices? What has changed? What about your customers? Does having a green component to your business matter to them? How? Please explain. When you are finished responding, upload your video. Thank you for your participation. Your responses are very important to us!
