1 OGLALA LAKOTA COLLEGE (UNIT/DEPARTMENTAL) STRATEGIC PLAN: SOCIAL WORK AY (Date Prepared: 06/10/2014) VISION STATEMENT In line with the OLC vision, the Department of Social Work seeks to educate students to be part of social change processes that more equitably distribute scarce economic and social resources as part of making life better for members of the Oglala Lakota People on the Pine Ridge Reservation. MISSION STATEMENT The Department of Social Work s mission is to facilitate students to develop the necessary ethics, skills and knowledge to (1) enter beginning professional social work practice, and (2) over time move into leadership roles within tribal, state, and federal organizations that focus on the health and well-being of the Lakota people DEPARTMENTAL STRATEGIC GOALS One Year STRATEGIC GOAL 1: To continue developing the competency based approach to social work education. Objective 1.1: Create a competency matrix for social work curriculum STRATEGIC GOAL 2: To continue developing the competency based approach to chemical dependency education. Objective 2.1: Create a competency matrix for the CD Curriculum. STRATEGIC GOAL 3: Implement a comprehensive evaluation of program curriculum. Objective 3.1: Finalize integration of syllabi, competencies and assessment matrices. DEPARTMENTAL STRATEGIC GOALS Five year STRATEGIC GOAL #1 To develop a strong program to leave to new faculty when current current faculty retire. STRATEGIC GOAL #2 To create a smooth transition in program delivery as faculty retire. 1

Departmental Strategic Objective: The social work department will produce graduates who demonstrate excellence mastering competencies. 5 Assessment Plan The Social Work Department assessment plan has several components for the assessment of core competencies and assessment of student retention. The Department is looking both at individual courses and assignments and across the curriculum to ensure a comprehensive and high-quality social work education. To these ends, the Department will, as a faculty: Review pass rates for all courses o Standard is 80% of students receive a grade of C or better, for all courses o Courses with less than 80% pass rates will be reviewed for causative factors o Matrix will show pass rates for each course for each year, and comments will be added after faculty review o Course pass rates will be reviewed the semester following the offering of the course (with the exception of the academic year, where all courses will be reviewed in the fall of 2014) o Pass rates below the standard will be reviewed with a particular eye to possible retention issues Review artifacts (culmative assignments, please see pages below) o Artifacts will be collected with each class offered and reviewed as per the schedule o Artifacts will be reviewed each fall o Review will focus on evidence of meeting the competency Revise course content as needed Revise program expectations as needed Review SWEAP assessment results (this process has just begun, and no data is as yet available), again with regard to evidence of achievement of core competencies At present, the Social Work Department has: Revised the assessment matrix Determined culmative assignments for collection of artifacts and begun collection of artifacts Revised the curriculum o Students have expressed and demonstrated the need for a professional writing course, and Sowk 213 has been added (beginning Spring 2015) to meet this need o HBSE has been redesigned (HBSE I now offered through Psy, HBSE II is offered in spring 2015 and is being revised o Sowk 303 syllabus is being revised o Sowk has shown low pass rates; course curriculum is being reviewed and revised o Sowk syllabus is being reviewed and revised o Other courses have recently been reviewed and revised and are currently undergoing general annual instructor review and minor revision as needed Revised the plan of study format to make it more accessible and usable for students and center counselors Additional next steps in the process: Faculty will review strategic plan objectives and revise as necessary Faculty will develop a specific strategic plan to address retention of students 5

6 Faculty will reinstitute the student orientation (required of all students entering the program and held the week before Fall classes begin) A field practicum orientation will be developed (required of all students entering the field practicum and held the week before Fall classes begin) Development of a course syllabus template a master template upon which each course s master syllabus will be founded Development a rubric template and of assessment rubrics for all assignments for all courses 6
