2 The Employment Relations and Organisational Behaviour Group Employment (Industrial) Relations taught at the LSE since it was founded Autonomous department until 2006 Now part of the Department of Management (with Information Systems and Innovation, Managerial Economics and Strategy and Operational Research) Excellent ratings for teaching and research: 'excellent' score of 5 in Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) and 24/24 in the government teaching quality assessment

3 The Employment Relations and Organisational Behaviour Group Our group: 30 Academic staff 30 PhD students 130 MSc students BSc:15 students each year. Total undergraduates: 45 Very diverse in terms of nationality and educational background Many opportunities to meet fellow students and academic staff Small class sizes

4 Past 1 st year opinions: I was impressed by the idea of going out for a meal at Christmas with everyone from the department. This seemed a much more friendly option that some of the other courses I applied to that may have had hundreds of students and therefore not the same opportunity to know everyone involved in the subject.very friendly atmosphere in the classes due to the low number of students

5 How and what do we teach? a high quality education in employment relations and human resource management in a research-active environment for intellectually able students from a wide range of backgrounds 3 pillars: Human Resource Management, Employment Relations, Organisational Behaviour Our teaching philosophy: Research based

6 Multidisciplinary Approach The degree draws on the disciplines of: economics sociology political science psychology history law organisational theory You will learn to apply theoretical insights from a wide range of literatures to resolving practical management and policy problems.

7 Multidisciplinary Approach Individual orientations to work: Psychology People are motivated to work for different reasons. You will study how management practices can influence individual motivation and performance. The employment relationship: Sociology The relationship between workers and their employers involves conflict over autonomy, recognition, and the ability to determine pay and working conditions. You will study change and continuity in this relationship, and factors that influence labour/ management cooperation. Employment institutions: Political science/economics The employment relationship is influenced by government, laws, culture, the economic cycle. You will study the role of national institutions in shaping management practices and employee outcomes. Aim: to understand the underlying processes behind employee and employer behaviour within different contexts, and therefore to be able to design more effective management systems and employment policies.

8 Entry Requirements Course requirement: GCSE pass of at least grade C in Mathematics is expected Usual standard offer: GCE A-level: grades A A B. At least 2 A levels in traditional academic subjects, at least 1 in an essaybased subject. International Baccalaureate: Diploma with 37 points including at Higher level Approximate applications received: 220 Places available: 15

9 Questions to ask yourself Do I want my degree to be in a subject area or a particular discipline? Do I prefer maths or essay writing? Am I good at exams or do I prefer course work? Can I cope with a heavy weekly workload? Do I have good time-management skills and ability to work independently?

12 Past 1 st year opinions: I've really enjoyed the opportunity to pick up new subjects like psychology and political theory. The ability to choose 3 outside options per year is good as it allows one to explore the aspects that are involved around industrial relations one can focus on the subject from different angles if there are outside choices of economics, law, politics or economic history.

13 Structure of classes and terms Teaching: 4 lectures and 4 classes each week Independent study, research and writing required (non-assessed coursework) Each year consists of 3 terms: 2 terms of taught classes (20 weeks) Summer term: revision lectures and classes (3 weeks) & Exams

16 One example Tara Idiegbe received two scholarships and graduated with First Class Honours Awarded the Bassett's Memorial Prize for outstanding performance and achievement by an LSE student Spent the next 5 years working at Goldman Sachs, most recently as a Training and Development Manager where she helped develop two award winning programmes that supported the strategic build out of the Investment Management Division Is a mentor and sits on the Board of the SPEAR charity where she helps to ignite a "vision of the possible" in underprivileged youth, build their confidence and develop their leadership potential Was awarded a Fulbright-British Friends of Harvard Business School MBA Award in 2009
