1 Staff Development Partnership Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Framework for Technicians Introduction The University recognises the importance of Continuing Professional Development for all staff and this CPD Framework has been developed by TTAG (Technicians Training Advisory Group) with the intention that it will give structure to your continuing professional development. It has been agreed that each technician will be entitled to the equivalent of 40 hours (five days) time for CPD activities per year to be taken away from the department. This entitlement would include flexible learning. In developing the CPD Strategy the following points have been considered: Managers have a responsibility to train and develop their staff. This involves discussing training and development needs with technicians (either through appraisal or otherwise) and encouraging them to identify and attend relevant training activities. All technicians should be appraised in accordance with the University policy. Learning activities do not need to be formal off the job training but may include mentoring, coaching and secondments. It is however important that whatever learning activity is identified it meets the individual s training need. Usually the identified training will be directly linked to the technician s job but it is recognised that some needs will be more broadly developmental and will therefore relate to personal development and future career aspirations. Technicians must be allowed time away from work to attend appropriate learning activities. These absences will be known in advance and should be planned to ensure that the technician can be released. The opportunity to attend CPD activities will be available for all grades of staff including part time staff and those on fixed term contracts as well as full time members of staff. Learning activities delivered through the Staff Development Centre will normally be free of charge to the department. Where a special event is organised there may be a small charge. Where technicians have to attend external events for which a charge is made they may apply for funding through the Staff Development Centre. Sources of funding available on the Staff Development website

2 The CPD Framework The CPD Framework is divided into Core Modules and Speciality Training. There are four modules of core training that technicians should attend. However, it may be that some technicians have already received training in these areas elsewhere. To avoid duplication of training each technician should carry out an initial skills assessment with their line manager and agree their training and development plan. This training and development plan is most likely to be agreed during annual appraisal.
