1 Communications and Marketing Manager Organisation: NIHR Office for Clinical Research Infrastructure (NOCRI) / LMS Salary: Up to 45,000 p.a. Location: Central London Contract: Fixed Term Contract/Secondment 9 months (Maternity cover) Hours: 37.5 per week Closing date: 6 January 2017 Background This role offers the chance to work in a diverse communications role, as part of the NIHR Office for Clinical Research Infrastructure (NOCRI). NOCRI works as part of the Department of Health Grant Management Group, managed by LGC Ltd. The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) is the largest public funder of health research in the UK. It is the research arm of the NHS. NOCRI's role is to maximise the coordinated working of the NIHR s 0.5 billion/year investment in clinical research infrastructure, in order to improve the nation s health and economic wealth. This clinical research infrastructure includes, for example, NIHR Biomedical Research Centres embedded in the country s leading universities and hospitals. The NOCRI Communications and Marketing Manager will conceive and deliver internal and external communications that promote awareness of NOCRI and the NIHR-supported clinical research infrastructure to audiences including the life sciences industry, charities and other key stakeholders. NOCRI has a broad responsibility across the NIHR and communications is an important area of joint working. Health research is a complicated environment and NOCRI works with a wide range of partners, ranging from individual researchers in the UK to the global pharmaceutical industry. The Communications and Marketing Manager will translate complex messages into simpler, meaningful communications for these stakeholders. The job requires an appreciation that PR and communications need to be appropriate for working with government departments. Sensitivity to subtle nuances is vital. It is essential to be highly organised and to complete work on time. Key duties and result areas: The Communications and Marketing Manager will have the following responsibilities: Manage the delivery, scheduling and prioritisation of communications activities for the NOCRI team. Translate complex messages about NOCRI and NIHR business into simple, easily understood communications for a range of stakeholders. Ensure that the role, activities and achievements of NOCRI are understood by stakeholders, using PR and communications tools, including social media and internal and external newsletters. Develop and deliver a programme of internal communications for NOCRI within the NIHR and Department of Health. Develop and deliver a programme for NOCRI to communicate to its partners and stakeholders. Audiences will include leaders in the life sciences industry, trade associations and other funders of health research including charities.

2 Liaise with the Department of Health, NIHR Central Commissioning Facility communications team and other communications teams across the NIHR. Put together suitable material and communications tools about NOCRI and the NIHRsupported clinical research infrastructure for partners, such as UK Trade & Investment (UKTI), to promote the UK as a country of choice for life sciences companies to carry out research. Collate case studies and develop multimedia materials to support effective marketing of NOCRI and the NIHR-supported clinical research infrastructure (in collaboration with other parts of the NIHR where appropriate). Coordinate the development and delivery of NOCRI press releases. Manage NOCRI s social media channels as well as feeding into wider NIHR social media campaigns. Coordinate responses to Parliamentary Questions and briefings at the request of the Department of Health. Maintain and develop content for the Industry section of the NIHR website. Manage relationships with suppliers to support communications activities. Where appropriate, support the delivery and implementation of the 'One NIHR' communications strategy, managing the delivery of the activities assigned to NOCRI, e.g. contributions to the NIHR annual reports. Candidate specification: The post holder will have the following communications experience and skills: Previous experience of working successfully within a Marketing/ Communications/ PR role. Agency experience is desirable. Successful track record of communications and PR. Well balanced between being creative and getting the detail right. Highly organised: communications will be completed on time, despite working in a rapidly changing environment with last-minute requests from colleagues. Experience of delivering communications in a scientific/research organisations is desirable, but not essential. Experience of working with desktop publishing and design software (e.g. Adobe InDesign and Photoshop). A solid understanding of social media and the ability to keep up to date with new developments in this area. Team player. An appreciation of the challenges of working with multiple stakeholders. A knack for translating complex messages into simple, meaningful communications. The desire to learn about the NIHR and health research environment in England. Strong written and verbal communication skills. An appreciation of working in a complex organisation, operating in a highly political environment. The ability to develop the respect of senior individuals in Government. The ability to develop a network of journalists in the trade press and relevant national press.

3 The following skills and experience would also be desirable for this role: A degree in a biomedical science is desirable, but not essential. Good knowledge of Google document management system Key relationships: The post holder will work under the overall direction of, and report to, the NOCRI Head of External Relations. There will be constant liaison with the rest of the NOCRI team, particularly NOCRI s Leadership Team. They will work closely with colleagues at the NIHR Central Commissioning Facility, NIHR-funded facilities and Translational Research Collaborations, relevant colleagues in the Department of Health, and communications colleagues in the trade associations for life sciences (notably the ABPI, BIA, BIVDA, ABHI and UKTI). The post holder will also work with the relevant teams from the NIHR Clinical Research Networks Coordinating Centre and the NIHR Evaluation, Trials and Studies Coordinating Centre. This infrastructure includes world-leading scientists in world class facilities, embedded in the NHS. Approximately 3,000 staff work in the NIHR infrastructure across England. NOCRI works to improve the nation's international competitiveness as a location to carry out clinical research to benefit the health and wealth of the nation. NOCRI supports the clinical research infrastructure to set-up and deliver collaborative models through which they can deliver high impact health research for the benefit of patients, the NHS and the wider UK economy. NOCRI helps the NIHR infrastructure establish collaborative partnerships with external partners such as the life sciences industry and medical research charities. Job purpose Reporting to NOCRI s Head of External Relations, the Projects Manager will be responsible for the delivery of a number of defined projects and activities to support NOCRI s increasing engagement with medical research charities. NOCRI has a key role to play in helping medical research charities to identify and work with the right individuals or collaborative groups within the NIHR clinical research infrastructure to deliver research benefiting the health and the wealth of the nation. Key duties and result areas: Charity Business Development & Sign-Posting Define, implement and effectively manage NOCRI s charity signposting process. Record and process external enquiries, identify suitable individuals and facilities within the NIHR infrastructure and act as a key point of contact for charity partners. Be responsible for ensuring effective use of a CRM system for recording all interactions with charities. Support NOCRI s charity business development work by identifying relevant experts from the NIHR clinical research infrastructure to discuss collaborative research opportunities, for example by therapeutic or technical areas. Cancer and Nutrition Collaboration Charity Consortium Support the development and delivery of a project plan to support the ongoing charity stakeholder engagement following on from an initial charity consortium workshop. Cardiovascular Partnership Charity Engagement Working as part of a team to develop and manage delivery of a project plan to support the engagement of relevant charities, such as the British Heart Foundation, with this emerging collaboration. Translational Research Collaborations Identify opportunities to increase engagement of relevant medical research charities with the NIHR s Translational Research Collaborations. Other Duties include: Supporting NOCRI s Head of External Relations in the delivery of projects arising from their regular engagement with medical research charities and the Association of Medical Research

5 Charities (AMRC), in particular to include identifying opportunities to work with the NIHR infrastructure. Working in collaboration with colleagues from other NIHR Co-ordinating Centres to map charity engagement activities across the NIHR and to ensure co-ordination of these activities. Working with NOCRI s Communications Team to develop marketing and communications material and tools to support engagement and business development activities, including case studies, news articles, blogs, web copy and social media, taking input from relevant stakeholders where appropriate. Candidate specification: Knowledge or experience of working with medical research charities. A track record of successful management and delivery of projects, particularly of those involving multiple organisations. Knowledge of project management tools and techniques. Ability to analyse complex information, to think and plan strategically and to exercise sound judgement in the face of conflicting pressures. Ability to prioritise own tasks and project tasks efficiently and effectively. Ability to communicate effectively and establish effective working relationships with a range of external and internal stakeholders at all levels. Flexible attitude to working environment and ability to work as part of a team. Good attention to detail with a thorough and systematic approach to tasks and high standards of accuracy. Calm under pressure. High drive and determination to complete a task where the work is unpredictable and/or complex and deadlines are tight. An outgoing and engaging personality with excellent interpersonal and communication skills written and verbal. Ability to use standard Microsoft packages (including Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and ability to use the Internet to search for and resource information. Proficient in the use of and other webbased applications, including online databases. Experience of arranging and supporting meetings and events, including event planning and preevent logistics, event set up, event management and post-event communication. An understanding of how clinical research in the NHS is carried out, and of the role of the NIHR in particular. A proactive, self-motivated, flexible and enthusiastic team player who can work independently and as part of a team.
