1 Housing in Context UEL_4_HIC This module provides an introduction to housing,how it interacts with a range of other services and professions. It introduces contemporary housing policy and examines issues of housing tenure. The module emphasises the link between housing and planning policies and the environment and sustainability. It examines the policy and operation of housing and welfare issues and how they are linked. The module will include a field trip which will illustrate the class based lectures and will demonstrate the links between the material within this module and other Level 4 modules. Funding Social Housing UEL_4_FSH Monday This module offers students an introduction to the policy framework of the UK housing finance system, including issues and problems (such as affordability) the funding mechanisms for social housing, regeneration and private house building, budget setting and personal finance issues such as housing benefit, poverty and problems with debt.

2 Explanations in Housing Histories UEL_4_EHH This module deals with the evolution of housing and the role that housing plays in contemporary society, and in shaping our Towns and Cities. In particular, it considers how local housing histories can offer explanations for the social and physical development of an area. Additionally, by looking at a series of contemporary social issues, consideration is given to the significance that housing has in inequalities of various kinds that exist in society today. The module includes the development of a portfolio of work which will require students to develop their research and IT and information management skills through the use of primary and secondary data, websites, reviews of documentary evidence and interviews with key actors in order to produce a housing history of their chosen locality. Hospitality Food and Issues UEL_4_HFI The Unit will develop students understanding of the structure and organisation of the hospitality industry and will explore the different sectors that make up the industry. It will provide an introduction to the provision of food and drink operations within the Hospitality sector and will consider supply and demand, operational aspects and the products offered.

3 Leisure and Events Industry and Issues UEL_4_LEI This module introduces the leisure and events industries structure, essential characters, and governance framework. It investigates the role of leisure and events in modern society as consumption, experience, economic driver, and identity reinforcing agent. It also identifies the range of skills and knowledge required to be a successful manager in these industries. Society, Space and Planning UEL_4_SSP One of the central aims of planning is the making of place and mediation of space. This module examines what this involves. It introduces students to the structures, networks and relationships that underpin contemporary society, and how these are reflected and mediated geographically.

4 Planning History and Principles UEL_4_PHP Friday 10am 1pam This module provides an introduction to UK planning combining a historical approach with a critical consideration of the key attributes of the planning system as it emerged and developed after the Town and Country Planning Act Alongside this engagement with the development of the statutory planning system is an introductory examination of the changing planning principles and theories which have informed the development of the planning system and planning practice. Housing Management & Maintenance UEL_5_HMM This module aims to enable students to critically examine current housing management and maintenance issues. It will seek to enable students to understand how policies and performance targets are set out for housing management and maintenance in different organisational settings. Consideration will also include the impact of such targets on organisational behaviour. In considering each of the housing management and maintenance tasks, students will be encouraged to identify the relevant landlord and tenant laws in relation to the above. Students will learn the importance of defects associated with properties and the importance of conditions surveys and planned maintenance. Students will be able to explore new developments in the housing profession, and will examine the changing nature of the landlord and tenant relationship, requiring new skills and knowledge bases.

5 Housing Development UEL_5_HDV Monday This module provides the students with an understanding of housing development strategies. It will start by considering the context for development and it will then look at different housing strategies put forward by UK Governments over the last 20 years, focusing on the most recent ones. It will also look at their delivery. The module is divided in three parts. The first part looks at perspectives on housing policies. The second focuses on recent housing strategies. The third looks at housing delivery. A block teaching looking at housing valuation will also be delivered. Policy Development and Evaluation 1 UEL_5_PD1 Monday 9am 12pm This module is offered in semester 1 and is linked with Policy Development and Evaluation (2) which is taught is the second semester. The two sections of this module are linked by an overview given at the onset and reiterated throughout (with reference to the second semester module - 2) to ensure students understand the interaction between policy, research, strategy, implementation and evaluation, in relation to housing. The module enables students to engage with the nature of policy development from the pre-policy stage to evaluation. The module emphases an appreciation of processes and people that form policy and provides the overview of the research process as applied to policy development. The research practice element of the module will provide students a number of key skills in research practice, related to the skills and application of learning to the student s dissertation in their final year. Research practice applied to professional practice is amplified by the inclusion of a number of guest speakers from relevant research organisations and professional bodies.

6 Events Strategy and Planning UEL_5_ESP Monday 11am 1pm This unit will introduce students to the concept and the type of events in the tourism and hospitality context. It highlights the principles and practices associated with planning, managing, organising, implementing, and monitoring events. It also discusses the key issues of event tourism, sponsorship objectives, and project management for events. Education and training for event management and mega event management are emphasised in the module. The module attempts to explore the impacts of events, risk management, and issues and trends of event management. Business Enterprise and Management UEL_5_BEM 1pm 4pm UK CREDITS: 10 The Study Abroad Team are awaiting this module guide. 7 Travel Distribution UEL_5_TDI Friday The module will introduce the student to the effective management and current legislation and regulations pertaining to retail travel agents and tour operators. It will focus on their links with principals and their role as major retail outlets for the tourism industry. It will pay particular attention to the both physical and on-line multiple distribution channels. Strategies, Visions and Design UEL_5_SVD This module provides the students with an understanding of how decisions made at a relatively broad and general level play themselves out at the more detailed spatial level. The students will learn how to relate the proposal for a master plan of a specific area to the broader local issues, putting into practice the notion of survey-analysis-plan. The module is delivered in two parts. The first part deals with the analysis of a broad area and the development of a strategic spatial option. The second part is concerned with the development of the strategic option into a vision and a more detailed design proposal for a smaller area.

8 Environmental Management and Climate Change UEL_5_EMC 5pm 8pm This module introduces students to the background of current environmental issues, including climate change, providing students with basic subject knowledge of contemporary environmental problems and resource issues. The module explores how different environmental policy and management regimes operate in an international, European, national and local context. It also introduces students to environmental planning and to related policy issues and to the different perspectives on sustainability. Housing Economics UEL_6_HEC UK LEVEL: 6 This module focuses on basic economic theory and its application to housing finance in the UK and the place that housing finance has within the wider economy. The lectures will use the idea of housing markets as the framework for analysis, therefore assessing the links between owner occupation, the private sector rented and social rented sectors and the inclusion of economic principles to housing finance policy development. The module looks at the economic mechanisms that influence national housing policy, the links between capital and revenue, funding mechanisms and the impact on national economic priorities. In addition to national frameworks, including welfare economics, the module will discuss the application of national policy to the businesses of housing organisations including local authorities, housing associations, and private landlords and explore the resultant financial environment within which they operate. The financial priorities and mechanisms of housing organisations business plans will be analysed to offer the student an appreciation of the role of finance directors and boards and the financial relationships that underpin the housing business.

9 Advanced Housing Law UEL_6_AHL UK LEVEL: 6 The Module equips students with advanced skills for dealing with housing issues and extends students knowledge of housing law. It deals with a range of complex problems and presenting issues for practitioners by analysing subsequent legislation and case law on the operation of the homelessness legislation and look at community care law where ineligibility under the homelessness legislation applies. There will an emphasis on how legislation is interpreted in practice. The module will also provide an update and analysis of recent case law with implications for housing management, i.e., allocations, tenancies, Cases taken from practitioner practice will be built into seminars and students are expected to undertake discussions and presentations around these case studies. Housing and Regeneration in Developing Countries UEL_6_HDC UK LEVEL: 6 This module is delivered in two parts. Part One begins with fundamental concepts of housing, regeneration and local economic development in a developing-country context; examines the forces affecting demand and supply, cost, location, conditions and tenure; and recent trends in the economics, policy and legal frameworks which affect them. Part Two examines the avenues open to housing and other urban professionals attempting to engage in this field; and considers methods of engagement. Examples will be drawn mainly from across sub-saharan Africa.

10 Hallmark Events Strategy and Policy UEL_6_HES Monday UK LEVEL: 6 This module will enable students to evaluate the strategic choices facing hallmark events, the impacts they can create and to discuss the ways in which public policy may impact on such events. Planning Law and Policy UEL_6_PLP Wednesday UK LEVEL: 6 This module deals in depth with the legal framework for planning control and development of land in England and Wales.
