2 About UNODC UNODC is a global leader in the fight against illicit drugs and international crime. Established in 1997 through a merger between the United Nations Drug Control Program and the Center for International Crime Prevention, UNODC operates in all regions of the world through an extensive network of field offices. UNODC relies on voluntary contributions, mainly from Governments, for 90 per cent of its budget. UNODC is mandated to assist Member States in their struggle against illicit drugs, crime and terrorism. In the Millennium Declaration, Member States also resolved to intensify efforts to fight transnational crime in all its dimensions, to redouble the efforts to implement the commitment to counter the world drug problem and to take concerted action against international terrorism. For additional information please visit our website: About INEGI The National Institute for Statistics and Geography in an autonomous body within the Mexican government responsible for the generation of demographic, social, economic, and environmental data, as well as the evaluation of its effects upon the state. It is also in charge of the regulation and coordination of the National System for Statistical and Geographic Information. The records it produces contribute to the development of the country by providing authorities and decision makers with important data concerning the national context, broadening their decision criteria and increasing their ability to assess the impact of policies upon society at large. 3 About the Center of Excellence The Center is a global hub for statistical processes focused on improving knowledge on governance, public safety, victimization and justice. Its mission is to contribute, from a statistical perspective, to the improvement of knowledge on these themes, through the strengthening of regional capacities for data collection, analysis and dissemination, methodology development, and information production in order to support policy making processes. Additionally, the Center promotes the relevance of the aforementioned themes at the regional and international levels through a range of activities such as the organization of a regular international conference and an active participation in international forums. Objectives of the Center To develop data collection instruments to gather information on governance, public safety, victimization and justice. To carry out research and analysis of crime and victimization trends using statistical data generated within the respective fields. To improve the quantity and quality of data generated through crimerelated surveys. To improve the quantity and quality of data generated by administrative registers. To disseminate knowledge and exchange data through the release of publications. To improve the institutional frameworks of statistical processes related to the generation and analysis of crime-related data.

4 Description of the Internship Internship programs at the Center of Excellence are temporary placements which enable undergraduate and graduate students to participate in the design and implementation of regional and international research projects. Through these involvements, interns can make the most of the institutional capabilities generated through the strategic partnership between UNODC and INEGI in the fields of governance, public safety, victimization and justice in Latin America. Alternatively, interns can get involved in research activities associated to ongoing projects and develop their own research designs within the Center. Benefits for the intern Individual or multidisciplinary team work experience in the development of research hypotheses based on data generated through crime statistics. Throughout this process, interns will be mentored by international experts working in the Center as well as by personnel from INEGI. Opportunity to collaborate and learn from international researchers, consultants and public authorities with experience in the fields concerning the Center. Access to data for the development of academic dissertations. Participation in workshops and seminars which are held under the framework of the Center s working program.

Location Salary Interns will mainly carry out their work at the facilities of the Center, located at the premises of INEGI in Mexico City at 711 Avenida Patriotismo, Colonia San Juan Mixcoac. The internship is unpaid.

7 Profile and responsibilities of the intern Profile Education: BA or Postgraduate degree in Public Administration, Political Science, International Relations, Criminology, Statistics, Law, Economics and related fields. Methodological expertise: Candidates should possess knowledge of research methodology in social sciences, preferably with an orientation towards quantitative analysis and the use of statistical software packages. Languages: Fluency in English and Spanish is compulsory. The knowledge of other languages is considered an asset. Qualities: Integrity, commitment, respect for diversity, team spirit and professionalism. Responsibilities To participate and support the activities of the Center regarding the collection, processing, analysis and dissemination of statistical and geographic data To write a working paper which will be incorporated to the documentary collection of the Center to be used for learning and dissemination purposes. To participate in the organization of workshops, meetings and conferences which are held as part of the activities of the Center To uphold the highest standards of quality and relevance for development of research projects and proposals.

8 Application and selection process Application Candidates should submit their CV and a cover letter to the address included in the Contact section of this document. The cover letter should include the name, general and specific objectives of the candidate as well as a research outline of no more than four pages. Selection process Complete applications will be considered by a committee that will select candidates to be interviewed. Approved applicants will be contacted within a week after the interview.
