1 ROLE DESCRIPTION Title Field Support Summer Date of Last Review: November 2009 LOCATION Branch and Section Antarctic Programme - Programme Support Geographical Location Antarctica Reports to Programme Support Supervisor Manager Once Removed Title Manager Antarctic Programme CONTEXT Antarctica New Zealand operates in a hazardous environment where the management of safety and risk are critical to achieving the New Zealand Antarctic programme. High standards of environmental care and responsibility are required in all our work. Close cooperation is required with New Zealand Defence, other Crown agencies and the USAP to meet strategic objectives. Planning systems are mission critical to the effectiveness and efficiency of the organisation, particularly in the area of logistics, resource allocations and management of large operational projects. The Antarctic Programme team, of which the Field Support Summer is a member of, ensures an effective New Zealand presence in the Ross Dependency through the safe, effective operation of Scott Base, and an efficient and flexible logistic support capability, which is appropriately resourced to support New Zealand s Antarctic Programme. WORK ENVIRONMENT Critical Work Environment Issues Antarctica This role will require the incumbent to travel to Antarctica and adhere to the appropriate health, safety and environmental requirements. The Field Support Summer will work in challenging physical environments and work unusual hours. Many of the duties performed require physical activity, the use of heavy machinery and safe handling of hazardous goods such as fuels. Aircraft operations will also be a significant component of the Field Support daily tasking. The location may place pressure on both the physical and mental well-being of the incumbent, their family and other close relationships. ROLE PURPOSE To facilitate the safe and efficient preparation of field resources/logistics support for personnel operating from Scott Base, Antarctica. All work promotes a culture of environmental stewardship and awareness of reducing impacts in NZ and Antarctica. Coordinates field support according to assigned priorities. Demonstrates a high level of support standard to all personnel at Scott Base. Performance Indicators which may be a result of the incumbent working at the right level Makes HSE improvement suggestions. Actively participates in HSE discussions. Incidents, accidents and near-misses are reported promptly. Hazards are identified and recommendations given where applicable. Workplace area review undertaken 6 monthly and are current. PPE is worn at all times when required. Challenges the unsafe or compromised acts of others Stakeholder feedback indicates a focus on Health, Safety and Environment issues. Ensure Scott Base & Hillary Field Centre policies and procedures are followed and adhered to. Prepare equipment for field events from resource allocation sheets prior to their arrival to Scott Base. Participate in event arrival briefs as required. Facilitate the loading of equipment onto helicopters including hazardous items, ensure proper handling of sensitive cargo (i.e. ice cores) and prepare sling loads for flight. Work as a helicopter technician (helicopter crewman) when needed. Provide assistance to local field parties in the field when needed. Assist with running staff familiarisation trips as required. Provides assistance and advice to field event personnel to select, test, or use their allocated field equipment. Issues field food to field events. Coordinates and maintains a clean and serviceable work area in the Hillary Field Centre. Ensures a high level of maintenance on all field equipment. Ensuring all stores returned to the field store are cleaned and any deficiencies or defective equipment are addressed. Role Description Field Support Summer 2009/10 Page 2 of 5

3 Scott Base team member Behaves consistently with Antarctica New Zealand s code of conduct. Contributes to creating a high performing operations team and to the overall community at Scott Base. Feedback should be provided to Programme Support Supervisor on a regular basis with regard to the Field Support Summer s work programme. Any issues should be highlighted in good time through daily operations meetings and monthly reports in order to negate any arising pressures from the work programme and other issues. Shows courage in challenging behaviour of colleagues that does not align with Antarctica New Zealand s values and code of conduct. Works cohesively with all Scott Base team members in order to add value to their work. Competently participates in community responsibilities (i.e. fire crew, bar duties, base tasks, snow removal, rubbish removal, stores shifting, running of the Scott Base ski field). Any other duties as directed by the Programme Support Supervisor or member of the Scott Base Leadership Team. LIMITATION CLAUSE This job description is not intended to be a complete or limiting description of the functions that the employee may reasonably be requested to undertake. Unusual and variability of work days and days off may not coincide with the rest of the Scott Base community and a degree of flexibility is required. MINIMUM CAPABILITY NECESSARY TO WORK TO ROLE CAPABILITY Emotional Intelligence Knowledge and Skills DESCRIPTION Ability to foster positive working relationships with a range of personalities. Values open and honest communication. Ability to work independently and in team environments. Demonstrates the ability to plan and work efficiently under pressure to deliver critical outcomes. Have knowledge in maintaining and repairing field equipment (i.e. tents and stoves). Have had wide experience in the outdoors (i.e. mountaineering, tramping, skiing, SAR) preferably in cold climate situations. Have current first aid qualification preferably to advanced level. 4 (preferred, but not essential). Confident communicator and must be able to communicate critical issues ahead of time before they become an issue. Be certified as fit for Antarctic employment by Antarctica New Zealand s medical assessor. Hold a current Class 2 and 4 New Zealand driver licence. ROLE RELATIONSHIPS Accountable for recognising others delegated authority: WITH: Programme Support Supervisor (PSS) Field Support Winter (FSW) Scott Base Leadership Team (SBLT) SCOPE The FSS reports to the PSS during the summer months. The PSS provides support and sets priorities. In the absence of the PSS the Programme Support Assistant (PSA) may hold the delegated authority of the PSS. The Field Support Summer (FSS) position and Field Support Winter (FSW) position work together as a team. In the absence of the PSS a member of the SBLT may take over this role. Accountable for achieving stakeholder relationship outcomes: WITH: Event personnel and Antarctica NZ staff SCOPE Provide a high level of customer service to event personnel and Antarctica NZ staff with regard to field support and field safety.
