When the Wiley Company asked 5900 training participants to select a category of learning where they would choose to attend voluntarily, "Leadership Skills" came up 81% of the time, second only to learning relevant technical job skills. SHRM's 2015 research report, "Business and Human Capital Challenges Today and in the Future" further supports what we already know: working people--not just the ones at the top--want access to more leadership competency for themselves, their peers, their leaders, and within their HR departments as well. Meeting your organization's demand for leadership development today presents a daunting challenge - not for lack of options, but from so many! If from the vast inventory available at "Leadership Depot " there was but one elegant set of development tools to produce the best leaders at all levels, what would it be? The Work of Leaders is the culmination of six years of research and development from the most respected and influential authorities on leadership, boiled down to a simple process that helps leaders do the work that gets results. The primary objective? To remove the mystery and spell out a leader's crucial responsibilities as clearly as possible: crafting a vision, building alignment, and championing execution. What you'll take away: A fresh perspective on boosting leadership effectiveness in your organization A basic understanding of the three foundations for moving a group from point A to point B An introduction to the drivers and best practices that make successful leaders Complimentary access to a personalized leadership profile that assesses your approach to leading, and suggests strategies for developing your best leadership WSHRMA practices is seeking (valued applications at $100). for 2016 grants for projects that benefit West Sound area About Your Presenter: communities. 5 West Sound Happenings Page 5 Submitted by Rita Birang, SPHR Workforce Readiness Director, building partnerships in our community: Investing In Your Employees Just Got Easier By Amy Hatfield, Dean of Workforce Development & Basic Studies at Olympic College Innovation, acceleration, and creativity abound. This makes keeping pace with the changes in technology and business processes essential. Companies and organizations gain when employees build on their knowledge, skills, and abilities to adapt to these advancements. However, it can also be expensive. And in difficult economic times, cutting professional development can be one of the first cost saving measures companies take. Good news! Olympic College (OC) is the recipient of state training dollars that may be used for supporting the education and training of your employees. Qualified activities are those courses related to career advancement and/or needed to perform in their current position. This is an extremely broad category and there should be courses to meet your business needs. Areas of emphasis may include learning new software programs, welding techniques, communication, composites, business writing, cyber security, and more. It can also include acquiring new critical skills such as learning Spanish in response to changing demographics. Perhaps your employees could improve their intercultural competencies by taking a course on human relations in the workplace or one aimed at appreciating diversity? Do you have emerging leaders you want to put on a management or supervisory track? There are many relevant courses to choose from. Qualified participants are employees who, at the beginning of the quarter, either: Qualified for unemployment benefits in the last 48 months. The employee did not have to receive benefits to qualify; Or, Separated from any branch of military service in the last 48 months. Qualified assistance may include tuition, books, and fees. Most leaders would agree that supporting the skill acquisition and professional advancement of employees is a benefit to the organization overall. So stretch those precious professional development funds by having OC verify your employees meet the criteria above and enroll them. It s quick and easy! Spring quarter classes start April 4 th. Interested in partnering with OC?
