2 Test Validity Professional a regulatory guidelines for personnel selection exam inations include e Uniform Guidelines on Em ployee Selection Procedures a e Principles for Validation a Use of Personnel Selection Procedures. These guidelines require at personnel selection exams be validated by what is known as criterion or content validation strategies. Criterion validation is a dem onstration at scores on e test are correlated directly wi job performance or training academ y perform ance. Content validity focuses on e relationship between e content of e test a e content of e job. Furer, validity (criterion a content) considers bo exam adm inistration a exam outcom e factors. Donnoe & Associates written test for Entry Firefighter (F-201) is designed to predict training academ y perform ance. W e have statistical criterion related validity evidence to support is test. Validity reports are available upon request. Most of our exam products including Stock W ritten Tests, Build-A-Test a Custom W ritten Tests, as well as oral exams, perform ance exams a assessm ent centers involve measurem ent of job knowledge or ability. These types of tests are best supported by content validity. For ese tests we work closely wi you, our client, to ensure at e content of e test is based on e job (job analysis, consultation on test assembly, a exam review by your subject matter experts). W e provide test adm inistration guidance including proctoring directions, a we offer scoring services as well as consultation on test score interpretation a passing scores, all at no additional fee. These steps, ensure at e exam inations provided to your agency are valid a will be administered in a fair a consistent manner. It is also important to note at a valid exam plan will go beyo a written test, a will normally include oer elements, such as an oral exam, a performance test or an assessment center. This also includes not placing too much emphasis (exam weights) on measurement of abilities a knowledge rough a written test; here we typically recomme at a written test be weighted less an half of e overall exam plan. W e would be pleased to assist your agency wi exam planning or to provide consultation on how to best use our tests. Telephone (916) Toll Free (877) 22-EXAMS exams@ donnoe.com 2

3 Entry Firefighter F-201 W e have ree alternate form s for e Entry Firefighter test: F-201-A, F-201-B, a F-201-C. These ree test forms are based on a common test item bank. This test is designed to predict caidate success in a fire training academ y. For agencies who are recruiting caidates who already possess a Firefighter I certification, please see our Skilled Firefighter test (F-223). The Entry Firefighter test outline is shown below. F-224 a F-225 EMT Supplem ents can be added to is test at no additional charge (see e next page for outlines of e EMT Supplements). Entry Firefighter F-201 Item s Description 25 Reading Com prehension 25 Ma Ability 25 Team work a Custom er Service 15 Mechanical Aptitude 10 Map Reading The time limit for is test is 1 hour a 40 minutes. There is no pre-test study guide. Test administration is very straightforwa, a does not include assessm ent of caidate s listening skills (i.e., e proctor does not have read-aloud components). This test is designed to assist agencies to select caidates for entry to a fire academ y. For ose agencies at require caidates to possess a Firefighter I certificate before testing, see our Skilled Firefighter tests (F-221 a F-222). Validity evidence for Donnoe & Associates, Inc. s Entry Firefighter written test includes content a criterion evidence. This test was initially designed arou a content validity strategy. Test construction was guided by e results of a taskoriented job analysis in one large agency, a confirmed in later multiple job analysis studies wi oer large agencies. Next, e test was adm inistered to a sam ple of greater an 200 incum bent Firefighters, supervisory perform ance ratings were collected, a e test was correlated wi job perform ance. This is referred to as criterion validity, using a concurrent sam ple. The observed uncorrected validity coefficients from is study include: (1) correlation between is test a supervisory ratings of overall iividual Firefighter s job perform ance =.2262 (p<.001); a (2) correlation between is test a supervisory ratings of iividual Firefighter s overall ability =.3074 (p<.001). As most agencies are aware, ere is a teency for caidates to agency hop a take entry firefighter exams whenever ey are offered. Because of is we have developed alternate forms of is test, a we closely monitor where is test is used, en avoid having neighboring agencies use e same version of e test. This assists in m aintaining exam security, a reducing e possibility at an iividual caidate would be advantaged, or disadvantaged by e process.
