3 FAQs WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE VALUES CARDS? The Values Cards activities are designed to help leaders improve their leadership by focusing on the values that are most important for them through guided learning activities. Based on the concepts for The Leadership Challenge, they allow the leader to apply values to case studies and to their own leadership challenges, thereby offering the practice that is required to develop leadership skills. The activities are designed to be used as a stand-alone or in conjunction with The Leadership Challenge Workshop as workshop development activities or as application or follow-up activities. IS IT NECESSARY FOR LEADERS TO COMPLETE THE LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE WORKSHOP IN ORDER TO PARTICIPATE IN THESE ACTIVITIES? No, all activities are created so that leaders who have not completed The Leadership Challenge Workshop can participate. WHO IS THE TARGET AUDIENCE? The Values Cards activities are designed to help people at all levels improve their leadership. According to Kouzes and Posner, the authors of The Leadership Challenge, Leadership is everyone s business. Kouzes and Posner s research shows that commitment to an organization is increased when people have a greater understanding 3

4 of their personal values. The activities can be utilized and adapted to any audience, from executives to individual contributors. Activities can also be utilized by a coach who is working with an individual leader. Coach s notes are provided throughout to help adapt applicable activities to a one-on-one situation. WHAT TYPES OF ACTIVITIES ARE INCLUDED? Three types of activities are included. Introductory Activities familiarize participants with the concepts associated with the cards. Application Activities help leaders apply the concepts to their daily life and work. Finally, Reinforcement Activities are designed to help leaders keep focused on the values, skills, and behaviors required for their ongoing leadership development. HOW MUCH TIME DO THE ACTIVITIES REQUIRE? Time needed to complete each activity varies, but most are between one and two hours. Activities may be split between sessions to fit into the timeframe that is available. Additionally, several activities may be offered at the same time for a longer, more in-depth session. DO THE ACTIVITIES HAVE TO BE DELIVERED SEQUENTIALLY? The activities are presented sequentially, and it is suggested that they be used in this order. However, if a particular activity is not used, you may move forward to the next activity, provided that the participants are given the more basic level of knowledge needed for that activity. 4

5 HOW CAN WE UTILIZE THESE ACTIVITIES TO MAINTAIN THE MOMENTUM OF OUR LEADERSHIP EFFORTS? Often leadership development is seen as a training event. In order to have a true impact on organizational leadership, the focus must be on sustained efforts to develop leadership behaviors. Utilizing the activities in this Facilitator s Guide in an ongoing leadership series is a good way to maintain momentum. Adding your own follow-up discussions, assignments, and organizational case studies that apply to your particular challenges creates an additional depth of learning that will help maintain momentum and impact your leadership culture. 5
