4 Section 3 About Cranfield Airport Operations Limited Cranfield Airport Operations Limited (CAO Ltd) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Cranfield University. Cranfield Airport is a busy commercial and GA airport situated in Class G airspace situated between Bedford and the City of Milton Keynes, convenient for the M1 corridor, London and the South Midlands and is the home base to many corporate and private aircraft owners. The airport has a 1800m runway which can accommodate business jets such as the Falcon, Gulfstream and Boeing Business Jet, which currently do not require runway slots. The airport provides facilities including ILS, GNSS and NDB approaches and dual DME let down procedures, 100LL and Jet A1 fuel, Air Traffic Control (Aerodrome and Approach) and fire-fighter Rescue and Fire Fighting Service. Air Traffic Control (Aerodrome and Approach Control) is provided seven days a week, during Airport operating hours. Currently operating Monday to Friday ( Saturday, Sunday and Public Holiday), the airport has annual movements of circa 35,000 that includes business and executive jets, general aviation and rotary wing operations, and has an annual turnover of 1.5m per annum. The airport is wholly owned by Cranfield University, who operate several aircraft of their own, including the National Flying Laboratory Jetstream or 'flying classroom'. In addition to this, the university, in particular Cranfield Aerospace also carries out extensive research and design and test work for industry and the Ministry of Defence. The airport is also home to the Metrological Office s BAe 146 Aerial Research Aircraft. It is home to a number of companies involved in training, maintenance and engineering including Avalon, International Aerospace Engineering, and Cranfield Aerospace (a 100% Cranfield-owned Company which carries out extensive work globally in research, design and testing for industry and defence agencies). The airport benefits from the wide range of facilities available on the university campus, everything from accommodation and catering to educational resources. Cranfield is a thriving business centre with further potential for growth. Its airside Airpark and landside Technology Park offer broad development potential to knowledge intensive businesses seeking a flexible and dynamic partner. The Cranfield Technology Park is already home to the Nissan Technology Centre for Europe, Boeing s global Centre of Excellence in Integrated Vehicle Health Management and over 20 SMEs. 4

5 Development Plans The University is committed to finding and working with a partner to develop a big future for Cranfield Airport. This partnership will bring major capital investments and upgrades in equipment and operations to prepare it for a major future in business aviation. These include: - Runway resurfacing Replacing the ILS Re-aligning and resurfacing taxiways and installing LED lighting and signage Relocating the Air Traffic Control Tower and Fire & Rescue Service. Fire & Rescue to CAT 6 cover during standard operating hours Radar This is a key point in the history of Cranfield Airport as it steps up to play a greater role in the development of its sub-region, acting as a business aviation portal for the M1 corridor, Oxford to Cambridge Arc and the growth in knowledge intensive business planned for Milton Keynes. 5

6 Section 4 Job Details Job Purpose This role is an integral part of the team providing air traffic services to all airport and local airspace users. Tasks will be carried out in accordance with the Aviation Safety Management System regulatory requirements and local procedures. The nature of this work requires you to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all departments within the Airport and the wider University Group, with external agencies, specifically regulatory bodies such as the CAA and with other relevant stakeholders. Key Deliverables % of time spent 1 Primary duties include but are not limited to: Carrying our tasks as allocated by the Manager Air Traffic Services in accordance with all laid down procedures. These include: 70 Assist the ATCOs in the performance of their duties Assist the ATCO in alerting the emergency services in accordance with published procedures Maintain data displays in accordance with published procedures Liaise with local agencies as required Accept booking out details from pilots and prepare flight progress strips in accordance with local procedures. 2 Maintain and amend aeronautical documents and publications (as required) 3 Assumes the role and responsibilities of Flight Planning Assistant Maintain a log of movements and record statistics as required 5 5 Undertake tasks associated with the ANSP Safety, Quality and Security Management systems as directed in order to comply with regulatory requirements. 10 Please be advised that the percentages allocated for the key deliverables may be adapted to take into account the needs of the Company. 6

7 Planning and organising You will be responsible for ensuring that all aircraft bookings associated with the Prior Permission Required (PPR) scheme are kept up to date and are valid for the period of the shift. This will require careful liaison with ATCOs and 3 rd parties wishing to use the Air Traffic Services. Communicating and influencing You will be required to interact widely with Airport customers, local airspace users and across the Cranfield University Group at all levels from operational staff to the most senior officers of the University and fixed base operators. This will require a good level of communications skills and ability to maintain a non-verbose approach to dialogue. Problem solving This task requires the individual to be able to prioritise sub tasks and ensure information vital to the operations is delivered in a timely and accurate manner. Resolution of conflict in schedules and ability to solve the situation, with the correct level of training and support, to ensure ATCOs are not unduly burdened with administrative issues. 8 Section 5 Am I suited to this role? Criteria Essential Desirable Education / Qualifications CSE/GCSE grade education in Maths and English or equivalent professional experience. Completion of, or working towards, obtaining the Met Observers Qualification. Experience Knowledge Skills / Aptitudes Personal Qualities Previous experience gained from working within a customer facing environment Able to demonstrate previous experience of working with relevant software packages including Word and Excel The ability to work in a small, highly motivated team. Be a proactive, customer focused team player. Excellent oral and written communication skills and able to demonstrate previous experience of providing an excellent customer service particularly over the telephone Ability to work effectively in a high pressure environment. Excellent time management skills and the ability to prioritise and multi task as needed Excellent interpersonal skills, considerate in interactions with others and ability to provide expert advice in a courteous manner Have a flexible approach to your work Well-developed communication skills with ability to build effective working relationships internally and externally Adaptable Previous experience of working as an Air Traffic Control Assistant Working knowledge of CAP 493 and Air Traffic Services. 8
