In alliance with others, we are helping to tackle the biggest issues of our times - from climate change and cities to the pressures on natural resources and the forces shaping global markets. IIED s Strategic Plan sets out four challenges around sustainable development and three priorities around making it happen, including communicating and influencing at all levels. We are committed to becoming a leading institution in sustainable development communications, complementing our leading role in research. Our research is organised into four groups Natural Resources, Climate Change, Human Settlements and Sustainable Markets. Our communications work is based on four key values engagement, influence, accessibility and visibility and targets five priority audiences: policy, media, academia and research, private sector and philanthropists, and the informed general public.

2 The Communications Team is a busy and friendly team of 14, with an operating budget of c 800k, working with all other parts of the Institute. In providing a service to our colleagues we also act as a critical resource and centre of expertise. Our strategy can be expressed in three main objectives: 1. To make sure our work is accessible, via clear content, good design and wide dissemination; 2. To target different key audiences in the North and the South policymakers, media, academics and the interested general public with appropriate materials to ensure IIED and its partners research can stimulate policy change; 3. To work with people inside and outside the organisation in building better strategies for research communication. The postholder would take on the strategic responsibility for inspiring, uniting and developing ways in which the informal Audience Development Marketing Team can work to maximise our impact. The Web Planning and Content Manager is also line managed by the post-holder. This post provides strategic leadership and development for IIED s online platforms and our 13 sub sites and to ensure good information architecture and content for the main site and any new sub sites or partner sites. The postholder will also line manage the Database Manager who looks after our contacts CRM database the Hub and is responsible for encouraging staff to enter and maintain data, for training them in the use of the Hub, for developing data governance policies with the Director of Communications and for looking after data protection in the Hub. Line managed by the Director of Communications, the postholder will coordinate the work of colleagues within the Communications Team and all staff dealing with marketing, audience development and publications across the Institute.

3 Key responsibilities As a senior role within the Institute the key responsibilities that will be required divide into three main areas: 1. Strategic Take lead responsibility for the formulation of a robust Audience Development Strategy to increase our understanding of where we need to fill gaps and deepen our knowledge of where we can have greatest impact. Take lead responsibility for the formulation of a detailed Marketing Strategy incorporating our printed and online materials. Take lead responsibility for the formulation of IIED s Publishing Strategy both printed materials and e-publishing. Create and maintain a set of key targets and indicators for monitoring and evaluating the success or not of our key outputs according to their objectives. Create a Networking Strategy (CRM) for ensuring we are in appropriate contact with our key contacts and in support of IIED s external positioning. A member of the IIED Branding Working Group working with colleagues to ensure consistency in all IIED branding both print and digital. Work with the Communications Director and Research Groups to develop suitable fundraising proposals and strategies for finding extra financial support for the Communications team and group communications work. 2. Implementation Take lead responsibility for managing and reviewing the implementation of a relevant and targeted Marketing Strategy. Take lead responsibility for managing and reviewing the development of Collaborative Impact Frameworks (CIFs project communications plans) with the support of the Publications and Marketing Manager and other members of the Communications Team. Lead IIED staff on addressing relevant marketing issues and build their understanding and skills in marketing, audience development and building relationships. Take lead responsibility for managing and reviewing the implementation of a robust publishing strategy for print publications (300 annual printed materials), e-books and digital publishing. Investigate creative commons and the implications for our publishing strategy. Oversee and facilitate the work of the Publications and Marketing Manager to ensure a strong marketing campaign with the resources available. Oversee and facilitate the work of the Web Content and Planning Manager to ensure a strong digital presence with the resources available. Oversee and facilitate the work of the Database Manager to develop our programme for the database contacts and encourage more take up within the Institute. Play a strategic role within the IIED s Monitoring and Evaluation Team to develop good indicators and learning about the dissemination and take up of our outputs. Co-ordinate the regular delivery of data and analysis, against agreed indicators, as well as ad hoc requirements, to the Institute as well as to external audiences such as funders and donors. Conceive, develop, manage and review a database of feedback, with the Communications Assistant, for managing and using positive feedback.

4 3. Management Line manage the Publications and Marketing Manager, the Database Manager, and the Web Planning and Content Manager. Act as a mentor/coach to colleagues within and outside the Communications Team, as relevant and necessary. The postholder is one of three senior members of the communications team that works with the Director of Communications to ensure the team works well together adding strategic value to our thinking both in the team and across the organisation. The job description defines the level of responsibility and area(s) of involvement of the post; the details of the duties may change over time and do not form part of the contract between IIED and the post holder. Person specification Essential Qualifications First degree, preferably in a communications / marketing discipline Relevant marketing qualification, e.g. postgraduate qualification in Marketing or Publishing or Customer Relationship Management Experience Substantial, relevant work experience in marketing, audience development, branding and CRM Solid experience of working on database development and management within the context of audience development Substantial experience at professional level of online marketing, social media and search engine optimisation Professional experience of budget / project / people management and project coordination First-hand experience and understanding of publishing print and digital Experience of designing, developing, implementing and monitoring marketing and publishing-related strategies Track record in securing funding for communications projects and initiatives Knowledge and Skills Excellent communication, presentation and interpersonal skills and the ability to inspire engagement among staff, collaborators and partners from a wide range of backgrounds and cultures Ability to communicate with both specialist and non-specialist audiences building credibility and trust Excellent writing communication skills in English Ability to work in innovative, self-motivated and organized ways and able to collaborate in a challenging, fast-paced work environment Good diplomatic skills Strong line management and team management skills, including the ability to work in a multi-cultural environment Mentoring and coaching skills and experience Advanced knowledge of business software (word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software, databases and communications) and a good understanding of Sharepoint Good understanding of design and branding
