1 Work-Life Balance Module Protégé

2 Objectives - 5 minutes Analyze the causes for an unbalanced work life Understand that balance is not achieved by measuring day to day activities Recognize when you do not have balance Learn how to build a schedule of work and off work activities

3 Step 2: Analyze the reasons for work-life balance concerns in the Protégé s current situation/environment minutes First, spend a few minutes thinking about what work life balance means to you. Be prepared to discuss your thoughts with your mentor. Work life balance can mean getting a to do list accomplished or it can mean time to yourself. In reality, it is all these things and more. The question becomes what takes priority and how to order all the things you need to do and want to do without becoming overwhelmed The list in never ending. The one thing for sure, if you do not know what is on your list, then what ever is requested of you, you are likely to say yes to. Take time now to use your work schedule and combine it with your off work activities. If you do not have a work schedule create one and add your off work activities. Be prepared to share it with your mentor. Once you become overwhelmed, it may take longer to undo the effects, but not all is lost Look at your schedule --What consumes your time? Is there wasted time? Multi-tasking, is this the answer or is it learning to delegate and empowering your subordinates to get the work accomplished?

4 Step 3: Create alternatives to assist in coping/solving the protégé s concerns min Protégé should think about their career goals Protégé discuss career goals and the potential impact on family If Protégé does not already have a family, discuss desires to have a family and how they perceive it will impact career goals Expectations Protégé assess or define what work life balance means to him or her Protégé shares any concerns regarding integrating family life with military career Protégé shares any present challenges or anticipated challenges balancing work and family Protégé draft solutions Protégé Implement or commit to a plan which includes these solutions Protégé be open and receptive Assessing Protégé s needs Determine if Protégé have any current challenges impacting the health & welfare of family and work life Discuss what resources Protégé may need immediately or in the near future to have positive work life experience Discuss any resources Protégé may need immediately to resolve any current and future family challenges

5 Step 4: Prioritizing your Alternatives - 10 min Revisit your weekly schedule now that you have discussed some remedies to work life balance. Protégé may want or need to rework the schedule of line...

6 Step 5: Next Steps and Reflections - 10 minutes This is a good time to summarize your session - this step provides the protégé an opportunity to formulate thoughts/ideas. Let them talk do you can assess their skills in speaking, listening and summarization. Determine if feedback is needed to the program manager and who will provide it o Provide constructive feedback, if any. There will be a midpoint and endpoint survey for determining course corrections to this pilot program. Use this time also to recap your meeting day and time, at a minimum for your next session. Determine the topic for the next session and make the program manger aware of at: info@emilitary-mentoring.com Next steps: Remember to write your reflection in your journal. This will improve your ability to understand what you think and why you may think it. Next Session: Be prepared to discuss any changes in expectations, day and time of meeting Focus on any new items that should be discussed that were not covered in this session.
