1 CENTRAL DAUPHIN SCHOOL DISTRICT POSITION DESCRIPTION Position: Electrician Department: Buildings and Grounds FLSA: Non-exempt Reports To: Maintenance Supervisor SUMMARY Responsible for overseeing all electrical work necessary to supply electric power for all buildings and equipment operations throughout the facilities within the district. This includes repairs, testing, replacement, and new installations. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 30% Plan layout and install and repair wiring, electrical fixtures, apparatus, and control equipment. 8% Test continuity of circuits to assure electrical compatibility and safety of components. 5% Install wiring to connect components to electric power source. 15% Plan new or modified installations to minimize waste of materials, provide access for future maintenance, and avoid unsightly, hazardous, and unreliable wiring consistent with specifications and the local electrical code. 3% Measure, cut, bend, thread, assemble, and install electrical conduit using hacksaw, pipe threader, and conduit bender. Pull wiring through conduit. 5% Purchase replacement units and parts when necessary, following district guidelines for bidding. 6% Splice wires by stripping insulation from terminal leads with knife or pliers, twisting or soldering wires together, and applying tape or terminal caps. 3% Connect power cables to equipment, such as electric range or motor, and install grounding leads 5% Maintain current knowledge of National Electrical Codes. 3% Coordinate and supervise subcontractors hired by the school district. 1

2 15% Other duties as assigned. C. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS 1. DATA CONCEPTION a. Analyzing: Examining and evaluating data. Presenting alternative actions in relation to the evaluation is frequently involved. b. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions. 2. LANGUAGE ABILITY a. Read: Ability to read journals, manuals, etc.; to read safety rules, instructions in the use and maintenance of shop tools and equipment, and methods and procedures associated with assigned work. b. Write: Ability to write reports with proper format, punctuation, spelling, and grammar using all parts of speech. c. Speak: Ability to speak with poise, voice control, and confidence, using correct English and well-modulated voice. 3. INTELLIGENCE a. Ability to learn and understand relatively complex principles and techniques; to make independent judgments in absence of supervisor; to acquire knowledge of topics related to primary occupation. 4. VERBAL APTITUDE a. Ability to record and deliver information; to explain procedures to others; to follow verbal and written work orders. 5. NUMERICAL APTITUDE a. Ability to interpret setting requirements; adjusts work schedules or staffing to meet necessary district requirements using knowledge of capacity of machines and equipment. b. Ability to cut rough objects to desired shape; to read measuring instruments such as micrometers and calipers. c. Ability to perceive identifications numbers marked on materials; to read and understand numbers and volumes; to transcribe numbers. 2

3 6. INTERPERSONAL TEMPERMENT a. Performing a variety of duties: Involves frequent changing of tasks involving different aptitudes, technologies, procedures, working conditions, physical demands, or degrees of attentiveness without loss of efficiency or composure. b. Attaining precise set limits, tolerances and standards: Involves adhering to and achieving exact levels of performance, using precision measuring instruments, tools and machines to attain precise dimensions; preparing exact verbal and numerical records; and complying with precise instruments and specifications for materials, methods, procedures, and techniques to attain specified standards. c. Making judgments and decisions: Involves solving problems, making evaluations, or reaching conclusions based on subjective or objective criteria, such as the five senses, knowledge, past experiences, or quantifiable or factual data. D. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 1. Heavy Work: Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. 2. Physical Abilities: a. Climbing: Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, and the like, using feet and legs or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized. b. Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing, or crouching, on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces. c. Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist, requiring full use of the lower extremities and back muscles. d. Kneeling: Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees. e. Crouching: Bending body downward and forward by bending legs and spine. Described in terms of duration. f. Crawling: Moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet. Described in terms of duration. 3

4 QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience: High School diploma or equivalent. Diploma graduate of appropriate trade school or technical college in electrical engineering with additional courses in electronics and computers is desirable. Five (5) years as a journeyman electrician. (Some experience may be waived by appropriate schooling along with demonstrated proficiency in completed courses.) Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form; to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in or from standardized situations. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide all units of measure; to perform the four operations with like or common decimal fractions; to compute ratio and proportion, and percentage; to calculate surfaces, volume, weights, and measures. Must have normal or corrected vision, good hearing, full use of both arms, hands and legs. Must be able to stand for long periods of time, move and lift heavy objects, work in awkward positions and in tight quarters, and be in good overall physical condition. Must possess a valid Pennsylvania Driver s License. Terms of Employment: 12-month position 4
