INSTRUCTIONS This part of the application is designed to further assess your qualifications for the job of Police Officer. It may look quite different from others you have seen. It has been designed to: meet Equal Employment Opportunity Laws ask only questions about the position for which you are applying be fair to all applicants. Each of the following questions is designed to help us evaluate you. Prepare a detailed, thorough, and concise response for each question. Describe where you have learned or used the particular knowledge or skill. Describe your knowledge or skills in a manner that will allow us to assess the content and level of your qualifications. Provide specific and relevant examples of your background (schooling, employment, personal experiences, etc.) that relate to the qualification. If there is an outstanding incident that demonstrates your qualifications be sure to include it in your response. Your objective is to tell us how well prepared you are to use the knowledge and skills described in the question. Good writing skills are required for this position. Responses are expected to be clear, concise, and grammatically correct. Proper spelling is also required. 2 QUESTION #1: Describe your ability to communicate orally in English with a variety of people of various educational and socio-cultural backgrounds when performing such duties as: conveying oral instructions in a precise, firm, authoritative, but tactful manner; explaining to the public the meaning, intent, and requirements of such things as laws, ordinances, court decisions, department policies and procedures; interpreting technical, occupation-specific terms for the public; explaining to the public the purpose and use of occupation-specific tools, devices, techniques, and procedures; conducting information- gathering interviews

3 QUESTION #2: Describe your ability to exercise tact, self-restraint, judgment and strategy to deal with a variety of people, adversaries and advocates, in such situations as: establishing an effective working relationship with co-employees (of lower and higher rank) and representatives of other agencies; relating with the public in a fair, tactful and courteous manner; dealing effectively with and controlling groups of people in stress situations; putting people at ease to gain their confidence and cooperation; dealing effectively with persons in various emotional states (hostile, defensive, traumatized, etc.) or suffering from mental illness.
