2 About IRTA IRTA is a research institute owned by the Government of Catalonia ascribed to the Department of Agriculture and Livestock. It is regulated by Law 04/2009, passed by the Catalan Parliament on 15 April 2009, and it is ruled by private regulations. IRTA is one of the CERCA centers of excellence of the Catalan Research System. IRTA s purpose is to contribute to the modernization, competitiveness and sustainable development of agriculture, food and aquaculture sectors, the supply of healthy and quality foods for consumers and, generally, improving the welfare and prosperity of the society.

3 The Sustainable Field Crops program The objective of the Sustainable Field Crops program is to contribute to the scientific progress and the economic and environmental sustainability of agro-systems based on field crops through research and innovation in plant breeding and agronomy. The main research lines aim at: Understanding adaptation mechanisms to the main abiotic stresses typical of Mediterranean environments on a framework of climate change, in order of incorporating them into the new plant material. Developing new omic tools (genomics and phenomics) that allow increasing breeding efficiency in the development of more productive varieties, of better quality and more resilient to environmental constraints. Increasing the efficiency in the use of resources through more efficient cultivation practices, respectful with the environment, while improving productivity. An important part of the activity is conducted in agreement with public and private entities through wheat breeding programs, services for performance evaluation of new varieties and products and the technology transfer. ROLE PROFILE IRTA is currently seeking a Senior Cereal Scientist with a deep knowledge on breeding, crop physiology, field phenotyping, genetic analysis and molecular technologies to lead the research activities on cereal breeding and adaptation of the Sustainable Field Crops program. The appointed candidate will take care of the managerial duties of the assigned team and activities, and will lead and conduct research of excellence to boost advances in this area of knowledge. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES He/She will be responsible for leadership, coaching, strategic and operational planning, and continuous optimization of a group. The selected candidate will deeply contribute to define the scientific strategy of the team and will lead the research lines according to the corporative strategy. He/she will develop scientific ideas and drive projects from the early ideas to the field implementation.

4 The selected candidate will work in close collaboration with other teams of IRTA in molecular breeding, remote sensing and agronomy, as well as with external academic, institutional and industrial partners. He/she will contribute to establish talent and infrastructure (internal and external) to enable strategy implementation and execution. In addition, he/she will be responsible for the scientific and operational management of the team including prioritization, planning and controlling of costs and investment budget. He/she must contribute to positioning the team both internally and externally as a group of excellence through regular publications, presentations at international congresses and plant variety registrations. REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS Ph.D. in Biology, Agronomy or plant science. Expert, with more than 10 years of experience in plant breeding, physiology and genetics, preferably on cereals, and an outstanding a record of scientific publications in these fields. At least 5 years of experience as project leader.

5 Fluent in English. Spanish at conversation level. Full driving license for Europe and travelling availability PROFESSIONAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS Rich managerial experience, good communication, and strong organizational and coordination skills. Demonstrated efficiency in financial management of resources. Capacity on industry concertation, technology transfer and fostering innovation added value. Goal-oriented, decisive and pragmatic. Passionate about cereal breeding and adaptation with scientific rigor linked to curiosity, creative thinking and smart risk taking TERMS OF APPOINTMENT This is a full-time position with the successful candidate being recruited as IRTA s permanent staff after a probationary period of one year. Salary in conformity with the remuneration policy of IRTA and in line with the level of the position and the qualifications and experience of the candidate. LOCATION: LLEIDA Lleida is the capital of el Segrià, a large county on the western edge of Catalonia that takes its name from the River Segre, which crosses the county. Lleida is the economic and demographic hub of inland Catalonia. The streets of Lleida, with their rich historical and monumental heritage, also bear witness to the business activities and initiatives befitting a major modern city that looks towards the future. Lleida is the capital of one of the most fertile areas in Europe and its agri-food industry is one of the main drivers of its economy. Many benchmark companies have their headquarters in Lleida, including a large number of R&D firms that have set up in the

6 Gardeny Agri-Food Science and Technology Park to take advantage of its international potential. Lleida s climate is continental, with hot summers and cold winters. There is an extensive public and private transport network for travelling to Lleida. The AVE high-speed train is a good alternative. There is also a modern road network, including the AP2 Northeast motorway, the A2 Lleida-Barcelona motorway and the C25 motorway linking Lleida and Girona.
