3 Field Education First Year Field Education is a series of Classes. SWRK 295 A/B Field Internship 2 days-week Credit/No Credit 16 hours Thurs & Friday SWRK 204A/B Practice Class 1 day-week or 1 day-month Graded A-F (Must get B or higher to pass) Second Year SWRK 295 C/D Field Internship SWRK 204C/D Practice Class Field and Practice Must be taken concurrently 3 days/week Mon-Tues-Wed Credit/No Credit 1 day/week or 1 day/month Graded A-F Must pass both to continue MSWI Time Requirements Fall Spring Total Hours 14 wks x 16 hrs = 224 hrs 18 wks x 16 hrs x = 288 hrs 32 wks = 512 hours 1. These hours may vary depending upon University and Field Agency holidays. 2. In Spring Semester: Field begins in early January, weeks before classes begin. 3. No sick days Make up the time missed 4. Negotiate with Field Instructor in advanced of anticipated absences 3

4 2016 FIELD HOLIDAYS AND OTHER IMPORTANT DATES FALL SEMESTER 2016 First day of Instruction: Mon, 8/29 Labor Day: Mon, 9/5 First Field Week Begins: Tues, 9/6 Veterans Day: Friday, 11/11 Thanksgiving Holiday: 11/24-25 Last week of field: Dec SPRING SEMESTER 2017 Job-Based Placements First Week of field: Jan MLK Day: Mon 1/ 16 1 st Week of Instruction: Mon 1/23 Spring Break: Mar Cesar Chavez Day: Friday 3/31 Last Week of Field: May JOB-BASED PLACEMENTS 1. Intern activities are extremely different from the job 2. A degreed social worker willing to provide one hour of field instruction per week. 3. There is another person who will act as a job supervisor. 4. The agency is 100% supportive of the employee acting like a student and not an employee during those internship hours. Two Types of Job-Field Placement 1. Job Conversion You have been working at an agency for a while. That agency is willing to have you intern within that agency doing a different job. 2. Job-Related Placement You get a brand new social work position that can be used as an internship. Pre-approval is required. 4

5 CHALLENGES OF JOB-BASED PLACEMENTS Tension between student role and employee role. University s role in assisting when problems arise is limited. If you lose your job, you lose your placement. Loss of opportunity to experience different organization and field of social work. Disclose Criminal Record, Expunged or Not Last week or in 1990? It doesn t matter, you have to disclose. Criminal Background Info Some of our best social workers are Wounded Healers Many placements are open to place students with criminal backgrounds Details-no. Some information-yes? Field Director to get paperwork and set up appointment to discuss. Drinking While Driving From here on out Social Work Field Insurance 1. SPLIP: Professional Liability Insurance Program 2. SAFECLIP: Student Academic Field Experience for Credit Liability Insurance You do not need to buy extra liability insurance. Automobile Insurance Sacramento State does not provide automobile insurance for students. Liability related to interns transporting clients in personal vehicles is between the agency s and the driver s in agreement together. 5

It is often aligned with a career goal. Medical social work GLBTQI Social Work School Social Work Prison Social Work CPS Social Work Take Note You and Your Background Although they inform your understanding of social work, they don t qualify you as a social worker. Being a recovering addict, does not qualify you as an Addiction Social Worker Being GLBT doesn t qualify you as a GLBT Social Worker Being a victim of domestic violence doesn t quality you as a DV Social Work Advocate Being a parent doesn t qualify you as a Child Social Worker Close to Home? A student can be placed up to 50 miles from home. 6

11 Etiquette Your messages reflect the University, the Division of SW and.you! Use etiquette when communicating with the field agency and Division staff. This means use a salutation ( Hello Professor Lewis ) Traditional spelling, punctuation and grammar apply. Step 5: Prepare for Interview 1. Research your placement agency on the web. Find out exact location. 2. Prepare for their questions 3. Prepare your questions 4. Dress professionally/be on time 5. Have folder/portfolio your paperwork: -Agency s web information -List of Questions -Resume What Questions will They Ask You? Types of Questions Asked 1. Can you tell us about your interest in studying social work as a major? 2. Tell us about your interest in our agency. 3. Why do you think you would be a good fit for this internship? 4. Explain a work or school challenge you have had to overcome and how you did it? 5. How would you respond to an angry client? 6. Please read the following case study. What are the risk factors? What would you do first? 11

12 Prepare Questions for Agency What Questions will You Ask the Agency? 1. What is the overall structure of the agency? 2. What are the responsibilities of a social work intern? 3. What are the best things about your agency? 4. What do you think is the most challenging aspect of this internship? 5. What theories do you most often use in your work with clients? 6. Other questions??? These questions are available on the Field Education website: Possible Interview Questions Step 6: After Interview Accept/Reject Placement 1. Student Response Form If you reject the placement, contact me right away. FYI: You only get 3 referrals. 2. Agency Response Form Agency Response Form 1. Agency might send form to Ryan Jones or 2. 13 Step 7: By Friday July 22 Turn-in Job-Related or Job-Conversions Form (if relevant) Step 8. Field Placement Check-In August 2016 Contact the agency during the first week of August to confirm the placement and verify a start date.
