3 SMART Goals Model in Detail Specific Define expectations and explain the objectives Avoid generalities and use action verbs as much as possible Measurable Achievable Relevant Time-bound Define specific metrics for quantity, quality, timeliness, and cost that can be objectively measured. Motivation and skill development are supported by goals that are challenging within reason Consider each individual goal and the overall number and challenge of all goals Link goals to organizational strategies Ensure understanding of how each goal contributes to the attainment of team, department/school and district goals Specify a date or amount of time when the goal needs to be completed Use the detailed questions on the following pages to develop, refine and discuss individual goals for performance and for development Talent Management Learning Series 3

4 Specific What will the goal accomplish? How and why will it be accomplished? Does the goal clearly define expectations with actions and outcomes? Is the goal specific? Does it use action verbs? Talent Management Learning Series 4

5 Measurable How will you measure whether or not the goal has been reached? Is the goal results-based? Does the goal define specific metrics (quantity, quality, etc.) that can be objectively measured? Talent Management Learning Series 5

6 Is it possible? Achievable Have others done it successfully? Is the achievement of the goal within your control? Is it possible to successfully complete the number of goals developed? Do you have the necessary knowledge, skills, abilities, and resources to accomplish the goal? Will meeting the goal challenge you without defeating you? Talent Management Learning Series 10

7 Relevant What is the main reason, purpose or benefit of accomplishing the goal? What is the result of the goal? Is the scope of the goals appropriate given your current position? 8 Time-bound Does the goal specify a date or amount of time when each goal should be completed? What is the established completion date? Does that completion date create a practical sense of urgency? Talent Management Learning Series 8

13 SMART Goal Quick Tips Specific A specific goal has a much greater chance of success than a general goal To set a specific goal you must answer questions around the goal: Who is involved? What will be accomplished? Where is this taking place? When will this occur? Which requirements and constraints need to be considered? Measurable Clearly state the results to be achieved Establish criteria for measuring progress toward the achievement of each goal in order to stay on track to reach the goal Achievable The level of challenge in a goal should match what the employee is willing and able to work towards Objectives should be challenging, but should also be attainable Relevant The goal should align with organization and department goals for a common purpose and focus The purpose or reason for the goal should connect individual results and contributionsto the mission of the team, school/department and district Time-Bound Goals should be given completion dates that create a reasonable sense of urgency Talent Management Learning Series 13
