2 Lawyers in Local Government Role Profile President 1. To act as the national figurehead and point of contact for LLG. 2. To chair the Board and Executive Board and all other relevant meetings of LLG as required. 3. To publicise the work of LLG through traditional and social media including by writing a weekly blog on the LLG website, contributing to a 6 weekly article for the MJ and posting on Twitter. 4. To forge contacts with and attend all relevant meetings, of stakeholders of LLG (including social occasions) as the lead officer and representative of LLG. (In particular but without restriction, including government departments, member local authorities, the LGA, the Law Society, the Solicitors Regulation Authority, the Local Government Legal Society Trust, private sector solicitors firms, chambers and private sector providers to local authority legal services, in particular LLG s corporate partners). 5. To forge contacts and attend meetings of international organisations with similar membership, aims and objectives of LLG. To include travelling abroad to represent LLG wherever relevant. 6. To undertake a workload on behalf of LLG including responding to enquiries from stakeholders and members and preparing papers for the Boards of LLG wherever appropriate. 7. To lead and give strategic focus to LLG, engaging with the membership and attending membership functions including annual conferences, branch meetings and meetings of other groupings of LLG members. 8. Giving direction on behalf of LLG to its employed officers and to officers of LGG, where appropriate. 9. To accept engagements as a speaker at conferences and other relevant events to raise the profile of LLG and communicate its aims and objectives. 10. To undertake such other activity or communication as from time to time might be necessary in the interests of and/or to the benefit of LLG. LLG Officer Role Profiles Page 2

3 Lawyers in Local Government Role Profile Vice President 1. To have been a member of the LLG Board for at least a year 2. To assist and support the President as required in his/her role as the national figurehead and point of contact for LLG, including attending meetings and conferences. 3. As a member of the LLG Executive Board to contribute to devising the policy and strategy for the future direction of LLG including preparing papers for the Boards as appropriate. 4. To undertake a workload on behalf of LLG including being the national lead with responsibility for the LLG branches. This includes, but is not limited to, supporting Branch Chairs and Secretaries as necessary and preparing relevant papers for the Boards of LLG wherever appropriate. 5. To support the President in engaging with the membership and attending membership functions as necessary. 6. To accept engagements as a speaker at conferences and other relevant events to raise the profile of LLG and communicate its aims and objectives. 7. To undertake such other activity or communication as from time to time might be necessary in the interests of and/or to the benefit of LLG as required. LLG Officer Role Profiles Page 3

As a member of the LLG Executive Board to contribute to devising the policy and strategy for the future direction of LLG including preparing papers for the Boards as appropriate. 3. To undertake a workload on behalf of LLG including being the national lead with responsibility for developing the role of the Special Activity Area Leads and coordinating the relationship between the national SAA Leads and local SAA LLG branches. 4. To accept engagements as a speaker at conferences and other relevant events to raise the profile of LLG and communicate its aims and objectives. 5. To undertake such other activity or communication as from time to time might be necessary in the interests of and/or to the benefit of LLG as required. LLG Officer Role Profiles Page 4

5 Role Profile - Treasurer Main purposes of role: To be a member of the LLG Board, the LLG Executive Board [and, if required, the Board of LGG Ltd] Recommend an annual budget for approval by the Board Be responsible to the Board for financial control of LLG s income and expenditure and for the maintenance of all financial records and accounts Ensure probity in all of the company s financial affairs Ensure that the financial implications of any decisions are properly understood and considered as part of the decision making process Duties: 1. Prepare and submit a budget of anticipated expenditure and income for the following financial year to a meeting of the Board prior to the financial year end, including recommendations about with the level of member subscriptions. 2. Liaise with staff at LGG and with the external bookkeeper to ensure that: all income due to LLG is properly invoiced & collected income received is banked as soon as possible all income & expenditure is properly accounted for 3. Report to each Board meeting with a statement of income and expenditure against budget, and identify any financial problems. 4. Authorise all invoices for payment 5. Authorise payment of travel expenses and other allowances in accordance with arrangements approved by the Board. 6. Be responsible for the operation of company s bank accounts (including interest bearing accounts for money surplus to immediate needs and any longer term reserves) 7. Liaise with Insurance Brokers and arrange insurance cover to meet statutory requirements and make recommendations to the Board as to any additional cover that may be required. 8. Arrange for the preparation of final accounts as soon as practical after the financial year end by an accountant approved by the Board, and submit the draft accounts to the Board for approval. 9. Present a report on the accounts to the AGM 10. Ensure that all necessary returns to HMRC and Companies House are filed in a timely manner LLG Officer Role Profiles Page 5

Maintain an inventory of any property and equipment owned by LLG and which officer has responsibility for its custody and its location Time Commitment: Attend LLG Board meetings - x4 per annum Attend LLG Executive Board meetings x4 per annum [Attend LGG Board meeting x4 per annum] In addition average approx. 5 hours per week LLG Officer Role Profiles Page 6

7 Communication Officer Role Profile To have and maintain a high media profile on behalf of LLG; To be the first media contact point where comment is sought on any local government or local government legal issue; To have a sound personal reputation as a leading local government lawyer; To act as editor and copywriter in chief for LLG, leading on production of external facing written material e.g. press releases, brochures etc; To oversee effective social media arrangements. To encourage articles on local government issues from the wider membership, and in particular from SAA leads and branch representatives. To advise LLG members on media relations; To promote and enhance the reputation, brand and standing of LLG, its SAAs and branches; To promote and maintain good relations with key relevant media contacts; To attend internal and external meetings as appropriate at all levels; To act as Executive and Main LLG Board member and contribute to the strategic management of LLG; To help celebrate the work and contribution of all lawyers and related positions in local government.
