1 IEM Practicum Example Deliverables International Education Management During practicum, students are required to submit 5-7 deliverables (3-5 for IEM-MPA), representing hours of work each, to be completed and submitted over a period no shorter than 4 months. Each deliverable project completed during the IEM practicum must demonstrate competency in at least one of the following program learning outcomes and demonstrate original graduate-level work, going beyond literature review and information gathering to include original analysis and recommendations. This can include the development of a complex program, plan, or artifact relevant to international education, with the possibility of larger projects being subdivided into multiple deliverables. Consult your practicum instructor for more information on specific projects. Below are sample ideas of deliverable projects for inspiration. International Education Theory & Best Practice Demonstrate foundational knowledge in the field of international education by articulating trends and debates and by applying best practices 1. Understand seminal and critical theory and research in international education 2. Describe trends in education policy and practice at global, regional, and national levels 3. Know and critique industry standard practices 4. Apply understanding of theory, trends, and best practices to individual advising and organizational programs and policies 5. Utilize resources for research and continued professional development 6. Be mission-driven and mindful of ethical principles Example International Education Theory & Best Practice Deliverables Apply industry best practices towards building an alumni network. Conduct a staff seminar on the effects and ethical use of agents on international student recruitment in a particular country. Conduct a risk audit for a provider s youth study abroad programs. Design relevant programming for students after they have completed their international education program grounded in international education theory. Research and write a report, publish an article, or deliver a presentation about o Efforts in increasing the number of male students participating in international education programs. o The positive and negative impacts of volunteer tourism with advice on how to maximize the benefits and mitigate the negative impacts. o Differences in impact on participants of short-term and long-term study abroad programs. o Internationalization trends in a particular country with analysis of the implications for stakeholders. o Predicting the up and coming sending countries of international students in the U.S. with advice for institutional recruitment. o A trend or debate in the international education field. Host an International Coffee Hour series where international and local students get together and socialize, sharing their experiences. Develop a program to showcase the importance of language learning. Work on a project that promotes language learning among youth. Reflect and write a report on personal growth in cross-cultural communication, providing examples and evidence. Interview students or staff and collect useful tips on intercultural communication. Summarize findings in a report. Write a report on the challenges in intercultural communication experienced during practicum. Make a video or write a handbook on intercultural communication for program participants. Make a video or write a handbook on intercultural communication for program staff in terms of how to work with international participants and how to work with international staff. Organize a brown bag lunch inviting colleagues to share their intercultural communication experience working with international participants or with international colleagues. Develop a follow-up plan of action to build on what you learn (for yourself or for the organization). Create an online or physical space (e.g. wall space) where students and staff can share unique values in their cultures. Use technology to pair a classroom in the U.S. with a classroom overseas and facilitate a meaningful program of cross-cultural exchange. Work with your organization to design an internationalization plan including timelines and indicators of success. Administer a survey asking international students to provide feedback on the services they are provided. Analyze the data analysis and a write a report summarizing the findings and suggestions for improvement. Conduct a survey with study abroad students about what services best prepared them to go abroad. Develop and administer an assessment plan to determine how study abroad students have been affected by a program. Write a report with recommendations for the organization on how to further foster intercultural understanding and exchange through their existing programs or creating new programs. Conduct a comprehensive program evaluation and write a report about the findings. Design an end-of-the-program evaluation survey to will be distributed to participants as part of the program. Write a report comparing two or more programs (delivered by the same organization) and provide feedback and recommendations based on the comparison. Research and write a report about potential ways to become a more competitive recruiter of students from Brazil. Update the host organization s website to make it more attractive and user friendly. Research potential donors to support host institution programs and write a report with recommendations. Create online forms/mechanism for enrollment purposes to increase program efficiency. Research and write a report with recommendations for your organization about the use of social media in marketing and recruiting. Create marketing presentations that can be presented to different audiences. Create a database and collect information on potential partners. Develop and establish new partnerships with another organization. Design a strategic plan to recruit participants in a new country market. Set up and manage social media tools for marketing and recruitment purposes for the organization. Execute fundraising events, including arrange details and logistics. Set up online fundraising initiatives or platforms. Write a grant proposal. Manage a staff of volunteers for a large event, including selection of volunteers, preevent training, supervision, and follow-up. Recruit and train host families. Create a database of local resources for international students. Write an employee handbook. Design and execute a training program for staff. Manage the budget for a complex project. Collect stories and anecdotes from program participants and document those stories through video, audio, writing, or another form that will be of use to the organization for marketing purposes as well as historical archives. Work with your site supervisor to develop a department strategic plan including seeking input from stakeholders, identifying priorities, developing timelines and indicators, etc. Arrange and lead staff or team meetings.
