4 Where it all began Formed on 22 June 1977 Union of three churches Australian and indigenous contemporary Christian Church
5 Our Aims To be an inclusive community of different views, cultures and expressions of faith
6 Our belief s Are drawn from the Bible and from the Apostles and Nicene Creeds
7 Our Structure Is organised by groups of women and men, lay and ordained, consulting together, usually making decisions by consensus, in each area of the church s life

9 Congregations are the embodiment in one place of meeting for worship, witness and service; and are seen as the focus and centre of ministry and mission alongside community service agencies; and a focus for the unity of the church.
10 Presbyteries are the councils of the Uniting Church that have oversight of congregations, ministry and programs within a region;
11 Synods are.. The seven state councils of the Uniting Church Responsible for the overall support and resourcing of the church in their area The elected head of each synod is the Moderator
12 The Assembly is the national council of the Uniting Church and headed by the President
13 LEADERSHIP. The Uniting Church acknowledges that Christ has commanded his Church to proclaim the gospel both in words and in the two visible acts of Baptism and the Lord s Supper. (Basis of Union para 6.)
14 The Synod of NSW and the ACT Is the governing council for the Uniting Church located within NSW and ACT Provides spiritual and community based services
15 The services the Synod of NSW and the ACT provides are distributed among 4 specific areas of responsibility called Boards. Secretariat Uniting Mission and Education UnitingCare NSW.ACT Uniting Resources
16 Uniting Mission and Education Seeks to promote God s mission for the reconciliation and renewal of the whole of creation, focusing on education and strategies that grow discipleship, leadership and engage communities in mission.
17 Uniting Resources With God s help and a servant heart seeks to provide professional services and innovative leadership in the delivery of resources and management services to support the creation and sustaining of a growing and vibrant church
18 The Secretariat Resources the Synod of NSW and the ACT to be the council that gives overall shape and direction to the Synod s work
19 UnitingCare NSW.ACT On behalf of the Synod of NSW and the ACT, is responsible for the work of community services, chaplaincy and social justice advocacy within the Synod

22 So, in a nutshell The Uniting Church is a large and diverse organisation. We provide spiritual and community based services across a wide range of functions. We are a multicultural church striving to treat people on an equal basis and seeking to give a voice to the poor, outcast and needy.

42 The Employment Manual is located on HR Services website. which is a secure site requiring log in access
43 Who does the Employment Manual apply to? All employees excluding Specified Ministers in Approved Placements such as Ministers of the Word and Deacons
44 Does all the Employment Manual apply to me? There are 9 sections in the manual. Some sections will apply to your employment with your employer while other sections will be applicable to managers only
45 As part of on-the job induction process you need to: Read the Uniting in Work Employee Induction Handbook familarise yourself with the website discuss with your manager which policies are applicable to you access and read the policies raise any questions with your manager

47 A Fair go for all Everyone has the right to expect that they will be treated equally in a professional manner and be afforded dignity and respect. We all have a vested interest in maintaining the well-being of the workplace. Unacceptable behaviour can undermine the well-being of the workplace.
48 The Synod of NSW and the ACT code of: CONDUCT: Behave honestly and with integrity; Act with care and diligence; Treat everyone with respect and courtesy, and without harassment Comply with all applicable Australian laws Work within the polity and ethos of the Uniting Church as described in the Basis of Union VALUES: Integrity Justice Respect Excellence Solidarity
49 Your employer s Policy Your employer is committed to ensure that employees are treated equally in all employment matters regardless of race, sex, marital status, disability, homosexuality, transgender identity, age, pregnancy and carer s responsibilities. X Your employer will not tolerate any form of discrimination, harassment, victimisation or bullying of people in their workplace.
50 What is discrimination? Makes distinctions between individuals or groups so as to disadvantage some and advantage others
51 What is Harassment? X X X verbal and/or physical conduct that creates an offensive workplace and interferes with a person s ability to do their work. Includes words, acts, pictures and images, manifest attitudes and a hostile or threatening atmosphere. Makes a person feel insulted, isolated, offended, intimidated and unable to work effectively or, ultimately safely
52 The three major categories of harassment are Sexual Harassment X X X X X X unwelcome conduct of a sexual nature; Sex-oriented jokes or abuse; Deliberate and unnecessary physical contact; Inappropriate displays of material of a sexist nature; Obscene gestures Sexual violence
53 Workplace bullying X X X Constant, inappropriate, overt and covert behaviour Criticises, belittles, isolates and undermines the victim Involves humiliation, sabotage, spreading gossip, overwork, unnecessary pressure, delaying tactics
54 Racial Harassment or Villification X X Using disparaging or offensive language or behaviour with reference to an individual s or group s racial, ethnic or cultural background Involves displaying or distributing offensive racist material, jokes or derogatory comments, repeated and irrelevant reference to racial cultural or ethnic background, practical jokes based on a race or ethnic group or physical assault.
55 Examples of unacceptable behaviour X group of employees repeatedly ignore a colleague because he/she got a promotion ahead of them. X male employee gives unsolicited compliments to a female employee about her attire that is of a personal or sexual nature. X employee who always tells jokes about a specific ethnicity in the workplace
56 Dealing with unacceptable behaviour Anyone who has experienced some form of unacceptable behaviour in the workplace should be encouraged to speak up Section 5, Part 3 Managing Grievances and Section 4, Part 2.5 Ethics and Behaviours of the Employment Manual details your employer s obligations and contains processes that should be followed in such situations
57 Don t forget What YOU think is acceptable behaviour may not be acceptable behaviour to OTHERS so Please think before you speak or act.
