1 WED 465 The Human Resource Specialist Syllabus Spring 2015 Instructor: Glen Blackstone, Ph.D. Office - 217B Pulliam Hall Phone gbstone@siu.edu oovoo glenblackstone Course Description This class is an overview of the theoretical framework and practices related to human resource development and management. It examines the strategic alignment of human resources functions with organizational goals. Course Objectives The following are the general outcomes of the course. Students will: 1. Comprehend the various job categories within human resources. 2. Comprehend the theories associated with the various job categories within human resources. 3. Analyze how various human resource theories are utilized in practice in organizations. 4. Analyze how human resource functions align with organizational goals. 5. Analyze how organizations utilize human resource functions to achieve extraordinary results with ordinary people. Course Requirements Assessment of student performance will be based on the following requirements: 1. Posting of student information (10 points) 2. Assignments Seven for 25 points each (175 points total) Assignments will be made every two weeks and are due one week later 3. Final Project (100 points) 4. 3 tests 50 points each (150 points) 5. Instructor evaluation (10 points) 1

ISBN Reading as assigned. Policies and Standards 1. Class attendance and participation a. You are expected to attend class and turn in assignments by the due dates, complete tests by the due date, etc. Students are expected to read assigned materials, complete class activities and other requirements as are assigned. b. Most problems between students and instructors can be avoided by open communication at the beginning of a course. Therefore, you are encouraged to ask your instructor about any issue not understood. c. Regarding all other matters students should adhere to the Student Conduct Co Student_Conduct_Code.pdf 2. Assignment Submission a. Students will submit assignment by the due date. YOU are responsible for ensuring that the assignment is received by the due date and time posted i. Students will follow proper etiquette for communicating electronically. Proper etiquette includes identification of the 2

3 writer, avoidance of excessive punctuation, abbreviations, highlighting, inappropriate language and emotion. ii. It is in the student s responsibility to ensure that the instructor receives electronic communications and assignments. iii. Assignments are to be completed via a Word (word processing software) 3. Late Assignments a. The majority of students complete assignments satisfactorily and on time. Out of respect for the majority of students who meet deadlines, 25% of the possible points associated with an assignment or test will be deducted for any work turned in late unless prior arrangements are made with the instructor. Additional time for assignments will only be made available for unusual or extreme circumstances and should be arranged in advance. 4. Accommodation a. Students needing course related accommodations must contact the instructor during the first week of class 5. EMERGENCY PROCEDURES Southern Illinois University Carbondale is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for study and work. Because some health and safety circumstances are beyond our control, we ask that you become familiar with the SIUC Emergency Response Plan and Building Emergency Response Team (BERT) program. Emergency response information is available on posters in buildings on campus, available on the BERT s website at Department of Public Safety s website (disaster drop down) and in the Emergency Response Guidelines pamphlet. Know how to respond to each type of emergency. Instructors will provide guidance and direction to students in the classroom in the event of an emergency affecting your location. It is important that you follow these instructions and stay with your instructor during an evacuation or sheltering emergency. The Building Emergency Response Team will provide assistance to your instructor in evacuating the building or sheltering within the facility.
