3 Exercise 2: What s the word? (4-5 minutes) Read the following dialog with your tutor and try to use context clues to fill in the blanks with the most appropriate word. You can find the missing word from the pool of words at the bottom. Ms. Popkies is recruiting members for labor union. She is talking to one of the employees, Ms. Johnson, regarding their organization. Ms. Popkies: Good morning Ms. Johnson. Can I talk to you for a minute? Ms. Johnson: Oh, good morning. Sure. What is it all about Ms? Ms. Popkies: I am Ms. Popkies and I am looking for a potential member for our labor union. Have you already heard of our organization? Ms. Johnson: Yes, I ve heard of it. 4 II. GRAMMAR REVIEW: Topic: Article with Generic Non Count Noun (5-6 minutes) General Description: An article basically is an adjective which modifies a noun. There are three articles in English grammar which are: the and a/an. Generic Non Count Noun The can be used with non count noun, or the article can be dropped entirely. a. It is used when the speaker talks about a specific object that both the person speaking and the listener know. Ex. The workers need the protective equipment. b. It is used when something is said repeatedly. Ex. I went to school yesterday. The school was full of people. Remember: Do not use an article a/an with plural or non-count nouns. Examples: The union president provided the information. She likes paperwork. He drank the coffee. I love the company party.
