2 University of Alabama Goals Advance the University s academic, research, scholarship, and service priorities, consistent with a top tier university, and continue to promote growth and national prominence in these areas. Retain and recruit outstanding faculty and staff to support the teaching, research, and service mission of the University. Enhance the university s learning environment to attract and retain excellent students. Develop a University-wide emphasis on leadership as a primary role of the flagship university of the State of Alabama.

3 Our Mission To partner with members of the University community to maintain an environment of safety conducive to the accomplishment and fulfillment of the University of Alabama's overall mission by providing information and services that enhance personal safety and protect resources.

4 Our Vision To be a department that continuously improves the quality of service provided to the University community by emphasizing the prevention of crime through effective use of information technology, personal communication skills, and professional standards.

5 Our Values The University of Alabama Police Department strives for its members to be honest, ethical, and professional. The department seeks to safeguard individual rights and to treat all with respect and courtesy.

6 Strategic Planning Long term General roadmap Identifies priorities and provides basis for the formulation of more specific goals/objectives, training priorities, and resource allocation

7 Looking back The 2004 Strategic Plan update anticipated: 28,000 students by 2012, with 7,500 students living in on-campus housing facilities. Increased building/development of campus Increased workload A ~40% increase in department strength (roughly 60 sworn officers) An additional five marked units prior to 2014 Expanded facility space needs

8 The Future To continue to meet the challenges of the coming years, effort must be focused in these broad areas: Recruitment/Selection/Retention Training/Career Development Resource/Process Goals Leadership/Succession Planning Professionalism/Accountability Exceeding Community Expectations

9 Recruitment/Retention Continue to seek highly qualified, diverse applicants to be a part of UAPD through active recruiting efforts Increase minimum requirements for entry-level officers Review in-house and in-the-field training efforts to ensure recruit officers and civilian employees are fully equipped to perform their duties

10 Training/Career Development Broken down into five basic subdivisions: Career Development Planning Cross Training Specialty Training Comprehensive Review of Existing Programs Fitness for Duty

11 Training/Career Development Career Development Planning Identifying career interests of personnel and working with personnel to develop and implement skill improvement plans Training/career interest surveys Aptitude/ability assessments Individual meetings with work unit leadership

12 Training/Career Development Cross Training Cross training of personnel will remain a valued part of developing a well-trained and responsive work force; however, current cross training models will be reviewed to determine: Optimal length of assignments Levels of technical expertise and training needed to achieve assignment goals Length of transitional period needed for staff changes The incorporation of short-term assignments within specialty areas

13 Training/Career Development Specialty Training (The incorporation of taskspecific specialties within the work force) Identify tasks for which specialization is desired Prioritize the implementation of those specialties To determine where partnerships with other UA or local entities can be leveraged to accelerate enhanced capabilities Maintain readiness of specialty teams through continuing training

14 Training/Career Development Comprehensive Review of Existing Programs Ensure training delivery achieves departmental goals Conduct a systematic review of all departmental training programs to ensure curriculum is current and is meeting the needs of personnel Ensure instructor numbers are adequate for training needs; identify priorities for new instructors and emphasize instructor development Review in-the-field training efforts (FTO, CTO) to ensure currency and curriculum uniformity

15 Training/Career Development Fitness for Duty Emphasize fitness for duty from career onset Work toward an enhanced fitness area Through training, partnership with UA entities, and other methods work to promote comprehensive fitness physical, mental and emotional

16 Resource/Process Goals Strive to achieve staffing levels consistent with other local communities Continue to collect and analyze population data from campus and fringe areas, along with workload and crime trend data, to determine resource needs Consider where civilian assignments can be incorporated to leverage availability of sworn resources

17 Resource/Process Goals Enhance technology to increase the efficiency of standard processes and to improve the delivery of information Continue to research and identify resources, equipment, and technology that will enhance the achievement of the department s mission

18 Leadership/Succession Planning To be a department that embraces integrity, commitment to service, and strong leadership principles Invest in the development of leaders within the department (at all levels) Develop and equip leaders at all levels, with an emphasis on preparing individuals and developing the skills needed to perform the tasks required at the next level

19 Professionalism/Accountability Ensure that the mission and vision of the department is clearly communicated along with performance and behavioral expectations Encourage ownership and responsibility for the accomplishment of the department s mission and unit expectations at all levels Encourage personal accountability and a strive for excellence for all personnel

20 Exceeding Expectations To continue to provide the highest level of service possible for our community To be attuned to the uniqueness of our community and it s expectations and mission To emphasize education as a key component for equipping students to succeed and to positively influence student behavior To always perform our duties in a manner that inspires trust and conveys our professionalism
