2 Conference Background: The Institute of Community Development (ICD) at the College of Charleston has been working with the Community Enhancement Coalition (South Carolina Human Affairs Commission (SCHAC) and Corporate Sponsors like Denny s and Boeing) to establish new processes that support community relations and development in the State of South Carolina, referred to as the Quality of Community Life Initiative (QCLI). Visit the ICD website at : QCLI began with an inaugural event STARTING THE CONVERSATION in September 2015 soon after the Emmanuel 9 tragedy. 350 diverse leaders and citizens came together to engage one another about community relations and development in our state. The event introduced a new approach to promoting engagement among diverse stakeholders, addressing contributors to the quality of community life and finding ways to translate diversity into social and economic value. 2016: A second event, CONTINUING THE CONVERSATION was held in June 2016 prior to a Minor League Baseball Charleston River Dogs game where hundreds came out to celebrate the life of Larry Doby (first African-American to play in the American League) These events helped to further introduce the new processes of engagement and issues management that are now being offered at both the local and state level in South Carolina via the community relations and development system. At the Local Level, the Community Relations and Development division of the South Carolina Human Affairs Commission (SCHAC) is working with the ICD to offer this new approach to county/city level Community Relations and Development Councils throughout the state. These councils encourage diverse citizens to engage one another in a constructive manner while identifying and analyzing key contributors to the quality of community life, including how to translate diversity into social and economic value. 2017: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration TRANSLATING DIVERSITY INTO ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY Myrtle Beach, SC The diverse stakeholders who participated in the previous events (at College of Charleston, River Dogs and MLK event in Myrtle Beach) have expressed a desire to experience the entire new process from beginning to end in one sitting as opposed to a series of separate events (repeated on an annual basis). May 5-6 This new beginning-to-end-process is being offered for the first time at the 2017 South Carolina Community Relations & Development Conference.

3 2017: On Friday, May 5 th evening, The Annual Community Relations and Development Awards Banquet will honor individuals, groups and organizations who have made significant and constructive contributions to advancing the community relations and development system in South Carolina. These are the reward categories: For-profit sector (corporate organizations) Non-profit/Non-government sector Education sector Government sector Human Resources, Training/Development, Consulting/Coaching sector Citizens Why Attend The advantages of experiencing the entire end-to-end process in one sitting and focusing on common issues occurring at the state level will have the following benefits: Participants will be able to learn and practice the entire new engagement and issues management process (this will also count as a practicum for completing the Certificate in Community Relations and Development offered by the College of Charleston) Identify, analyze and develop constructive advisory strategies with regard to State wide contributors to the quality of community life and factors that translate diversity into social and economic value (provide organized and evidence based state level advisory strategies) Develop or advance key organizational and community development competencies by attending a variety of supporting workshops Learn about and discuss key community relations and development initiatives currently being implemented by private sector, non-profit, government and education organizations Who Will Be Attending The expected participants within this process include: Current and future members of community relations and development councils (and other members of the community relations and development system) Elected officials and others who want to partner with organizations in their communities and at the state level that provide engage in community development activities Consultants, facilitators, coaches and other professionals who are interested in learning from and/or supporting the community development process Corporate representatives of Human Resource, Corporate Social Responsibility and Diversity/Inclusion departments interested in presenting information about their own initiatives, learning about and participating in the new community relations and development system (publicizing and/or adding to CSR portfolio) Representatives of non-profit, government and educational organizations interested in presenting information about their own initiatives, learning about and participating in the new community relations and development system (publicizing and/or adding to their services portfolio) Other interested stakeholders and citizens

4 What Will Take Place At The Conference The conference will be comprised on 3 streams of activity (activities occurring in separate conference rooms) Stream 1 Beginning-to-end presentation and practice of the constructive engagement and issues management process that addresses key contributors to the quality of community life and helps translate diversity into social and economic value at the state level (process being introduced into the new South Carolina Community Relations and Development System) Stream 2 presentations, discussions and workshops that help develop the competencies necessary to participate within and support the new community relations and development processes, and develop communities and organizations more generally (e.g. constructive dialogue, positive problem solving, constructive conflict management, deliberative dialogue, conducting a public issues management forum, community needs assessment, coaching others etc.) Stream 3 opportunity for the corporate sector (Human Resources, CSR, OD/Training, Diversity and Inclusion), non-profit sector, education sector and government agencies/departments to present, discuss and further develop their initiatives regarding community and organizational relations/development, corporate social responsibility, diversity/inclusion and initiatives that help translate diversity into social and economic value. This will also provide an opportunity to explore linking into and partnering with the new and evolving community relations and development system Short Term Benefits 1. The design of the conference allows for participants to stick with one stream of activity or move between streams of activities based on their interests. 2. It provides facilitators, consultants and coaches the opportunity to present their expertise and/or attend sessions that help advance their expertise (stream 2). 3. The design of the conference also provides the corporate, non-profit, education and government sectors the opportunity to both present their related initiatives and learn from others (or partner with other organizations in doing so via things like a panel discussions e.g. a panel discussion on understanding and implementing corporate social responsibility members of the panel may represent different organizations). This will provide the various sectors with the opportunity to receive some exposure, generate constructive engagement around some of their own activities, further develop their initiatives and develop partnerships. 4. Those participants that attend a sufficient number of sessions over the 2 days will receive certification of having completed the practicum component of new Certificate in Community Relations and Development (remaining requirements can be completed via online training modules).

5 Long Term Benefits The long term goal is to embed the conference into an annual cycle that: 1. Reviews community level issues (identified by councils at the local level), identifies common patterns across the state, and brings council members and others together to engage in a state level analysis and develop a state level advisory plan that can be implemented throughout the year (people and organizations wishing to support this process can participate within and link into this process, and develop ongoing partnerships where there is common interest and need). Progress on this plan will be reviewed at the end of the year and at the beginning of next year s conference. (stream 1) 2. Supports the ongoing development of knowledge and competencies in the areas of community and organizational development; community relations; consulting, facilitation and coaching; corporate social responsibility and diversity/inclusion. (stream 2) 3. Provides the corporate, non-profit, education and government sectors with an annual forum for presenting, examining and further developing their community/organizational development, CSR, and Diversity/Inclusion initiatives. It also provides the various sectors with the opportunity to establish new partnerships, and review and further develop existing partnerships with the community relations/development system and others.
