6 How to use your Career Path Guide Start by reading the Career Path Guide to familiarize yourself with your role at HUD. Ask yourself these questions as you go through: What are your contributions to HUD in this occupation? What should be your main focus in your career? What are the competencies you need to be successful in your career? Reflect on/evaluate your standing on each of these competencies. Which of these competencies do you considerer strengths? Which areas could you improve? What have you already done to advance your career through learning and development? What are the specific resources you can use to strengthen those competencies you would like to improve? What are the benefits of being a mentor and a mentee in your career? What are some specific steps you could take to establish a mentoring relationship? Next, locate your current GS level and read through the description. Reflect or think critically about where you are now. Which of the major duties and responsibilities do I have experience with? Which do I do well? Which can I improve, and in which should I gain more experience? What are my current levels of experience, education and qualifications? How do they compare to those listed here? What are my current levels of knowledge, skills, and abilities? How do they compare to those listed here? Which of the training, development, and experience areas do I need to focus on to perform my job more effectively and efficiently, and advance my career? Finally, read through the descriptions of the next two levels in your career guide. Reflect on and think critically about what you need to do to meet the requirements for the next two levels. This should help you prepare for the next step in HUD LEARN s Employee Development Strategy; creating an individual development plan. What are my current levels of knowledge, skills, and abilities? How do they compare to those listed here? Which of the education levels and qualification requirements do I already possess? Which do I not yet have? Which training and development areas should I focus on to obtain them? What are the experiences I should pursue to obtain them? Which of the knowledge, skills, and ability requirements do I already possess? Which do I not yet have? Which training and development areas should I focus on to gain them? What are the experiences I should pursue to gain them? 6 Career Paths User Guide
