Let s try a pilot with 50 and assess the results Let s see if other businesses are looking to build the same capability 5

6 Scenario 2 Business wants to buy 5,000 licenses of a SaaS Talent Management product and integrate it with your HRIS What Yesterday s CIO would say: We need to host in our data centre if we are going to integrate Our HRIS provider can customize us a talent management module Data can t be housed securely outside our organization. What Tomorrow s CIO would say: How do we best integrate Is this leveragable for the organization We need to assess their security protocols and data controls 6

7 Scenario 3 The organization has selected a new robust technology package for case management. What Yesterday s CIO would say: We can customize the software to meet the unique requirements of our business partners Let s understand the detailed business requirements What Tomorrow s CIO would say: The business has options. If we implement as is then we can release in 90 days or we can customize to make it work and take 12 months Let s understand how the business use cases and how this tool supports them 7

8 Scenario 4 Social Media is not just a way for employees to manage their personal lives, but can be a key competitive differentiator. What Yesterday s CIO would say: Social media is a fad and has no business relevance When the business gives us requirements we can consider solutions Block access to all social media sites. What Tomorrow s CIO would say: There s an opportunity to use social inside to improve the effectiveness of our organization and requires an enterprise approach to get the most value. I will sponsor this. Our businesses can use social media to interact with our clients. Let s make sure they can get the value and be compliant with regulation Employees wasting time on social media is a performance management issue to be dealt with by a manager 8

Can we offer another tier of service or remove a service Here s what we have done to reduce the cost of the service We ve enabled x$ revenue and new cost savings 10

What Yesterday s CIO would say: They need to earn their stripes They need to learn how we do things here Make sure we develop their technical skills What Tomorrow s CIO would say: How can we challenge them? Maybe fresh eyes will help us improve how we do things today Make sure we develop their leadership skills This is the way we ve always done it here. 11

12 Scenario 8 Board and leadership starts asking whether we re prepared to defend against cybersecurity threats? What Yesterday s CIO would say: Of course. We shut down everything. We have all sorts of tools and protocols in place. There will never be a breach What Tomorrow s CIO would say: Let s deliver a briefing on the different threats and how we re addressing them in with a balanced approach We have leading cybersecurity talent that keeps us ahead of the bad guys We will be breached but we are ready to mitigate 12

Get a wide range of experiences Work on all sides of the business IT/Fence (or ignore the fence all together) Be remarkably open to changes Re-invent yourself proactively and often Try something new every day Be ready to take a seat at the enterprise wide table (and have something to say when you get there) Build a peer network in the broader community other industries, academia, vendors Reach out to your staff 17
