1 JOB DESCRIPTION & PERSON SPECIFICATION College Department: Position Title: Position Code: Learning Area Support JD SS KLAS02 Position Classification: Lutheran Schools Officer Grade 4 Tenure: 5 February April hours per week JOB DESCRIPTION 1. Summary of the broad purpose of the job in relation to the College s goals. (Expected outcome and how it is achieved.) The is responsible for the effective day to day running of the science resource facility. This includes ensuring that all practicals and experiments are prepared for each class, there are adequate chemicals and equipment to meet the needs of the department, science staff are supported as required and all administrative tasks and housekeeping is done. The will supervise the Laboratory Assistant and provide clear direction and guidance as and when required. The position will assist Science Staff by making them aware of relevant resources, discussing scientific applications, teaching practical techniques to non-core staff and demonstrating practical outcomes. The will ensure that there are adequate operational systems maintained within the department. These will include a material safety data sheet register, cataloguing, stock listing, laboratory handbook, safe operating procedures and risk assessments. 2. Reporting / Working Relationships (To whom the person reports, staff for whom the person is responsible and other significant connections and working relationships within the College.) The reports to the Science Learning Area Leader and the senior manager is the Deputy Principal. They will interact with a wide range of staff across the College. 3. Special Conditions The is employed under the terms and conditions specified in the Lutheran Schools Enterprise Agreement. All overtime will require the approval of the Science Learning Area Leader. 4. Extent of Authority Manage assigned work to achieve all goals to finality within policies and guidelines. The role of the encompasses activities within the following Key Result Areas (KRAs): Resource Control Teacher Support Administration General Requirements The responsibility of the in each KRA includes: Resource Control (Ordering, Maintenance) Order science stock, consumables and equipment as required and within the boundaries of the budget. Maintain and repair science equipment as required or source suitable repairers. Clean and store equipment after each science practical and return consumables to storage. Care for flora and fauna under control of the science department. Teacher Support (Lab set-up) Set up equipment and experiments for class practicals and demonstrations. Assist in the preparation of science resources for classrooms. Assist and provide professional support to non-core science teachers by directing them to relevant resources, discussing scientific applications, teaching practical techniques and demonstrating practical outcomes. Administration (Registers, OHS&W) Maintain hazardous chemicals register. JD SS KLAS02 () V

3 Maintain safety data sheets and the register. Develop and implement risk assessments for practicals and safe operating procedures for equipment. Develop and maintain a laboratory technicians handbook. Maintain a catalogue of all chemicals. Implement and maintain relevant WHS procedures. General Requirements Ensure the laboratories and the preparation facilities are kept in a neat and tidy state. Research new practicals and resources and advise the Science Learning Area Leader. 4 PERSON SPECIFICATION 1. Educational / Vocational Qualifications Advanced Diploma of Applied Science 2. Personal Skills, Abilities & Aptitude A personal commitment to the College Vision, Mission and values underpinning the delivery of a Christian based education to students in the College community is essential. Skills Abilities Aptitude Intermediate skills in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and Chemwatch are desirable. Organisational and time management skills including the ability to cope with high volumes of work, changing priorities and meet critical deadlines. Well-developed communication skills (phone, , written correspondence). Interpersonal skills that portray a welcoming atmosphere, friendly disposition and helpful nature. To implement new policies and procedures. Organise and set priorities for various activities while meeting required deadlines. Work cohesively in a team environment as well as working autonomously where required. Take an objective approach to challenges and effectively use initiative. 5 3. Experience Advanced skills and experience within a laboratory environment. Experience in setting up experiments and preparing chemicals for Year 11 and 12 classes would be an advantage. 4. Knowledge Advanced resource knowledge within a laboratory environment. Thorough knowledge of laboratory techniques, safe work practices and Health and Safety. A level of understanding of concepts in senior Science enabling the support of teachers and students and an ability to solve problems at a high level. JD SS KLAS02 () V

6 PERSON SPECIFICATION 5. Classification Level The position of carries a Classification Level of 4. (Refer to the guidelines in the Lutheran Schools Enterprise Agreement for additional details relating to roles and responsibilities at this Grade Level.) 6. Performance Standards & Review An annual Performance Review is undertaken with the Science Learning Area Leader to determine capacity to meet the demands of the role, where additional skills training is required and what level of job satisfaction is being obtained. The basis of the Performance Review is utilising the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) identified in Appendix A. 8 PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT APPENDIX A In relation to setting goals and managing performance, Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) are put in place within each Key Result Area (KRA) so that effort can be measured and performance rewarded. Resource Control Stock Equipment Key Performance Indicator (KPI) Levels of stock are maintained so that the faculty is not negatively impacted. The budget for science stock and materials is not exceeded. The science equipment is in good order and repair at all times. Science equipment and consumables are appropriately stored and accessible at all times to staff. Flora and fauna under the control of the science department is well cared for. Teacher Support Practical Key Performance Indicator (KPI) Set up for practicals and experiments are on time and accurate in number/volume etc. Senior Science practicals are catered for at a level which allows for certainty, accuracy and precision Resources Science resources are available for each class as required. Non-core Science teaching staff are well supported and confident in the advice and direction provided. Administration Registers Key Performance Indicator (KPI) The hazardous chemical register is up to date and available at all times. Material Safety Data Sheets are available for all substances, are accessible and current in date. Practicals Handbook Chemicals Science practicals have risk assessments conducted and safe operating procedures for all equipment. A laboratory technician s handbook is available and up to date.
